Interest in the World and Humanity

Entering the New Millennium with Goethe
Rudolf Steiner Archives August 28 marked a culmination in this Goethe year:
– Successful Exhibits 250 years ago an individuality was born who clearly
page 3 still affects us today. Goethe had seemed forgotten by
European culture, but now people are speaking of him
everywhere again. One can meet him in many places,
whether it be on the stage of the Frankfurt Theater (in
a thoroughly honest and therefore not unproblematic
production of Faust) or in the refreshing contributions
of Johann Wolfgang Goethe University’s Scientific
Festival (also in Frankfurt, the town of his birth).
One popular motif chosen for articles and exhibits
is that of the traveller: the experience of what it means
Art of Freedom – to visit a foreign land, something Goethe embraced

Anthroposophy in Japan prejudices. That journey helped him to discover his
page 6 own identity, transforming him into a world citizen
even when he had returned to the Weimar provinces.
This is an experience familiar to many people today –
not only as willing travellers or unwilling refugees,
but often even within our own country or indeed
within our own skin. Often we experience our own
identity (and freedom) through open encounter,
through dialogue with another, through understand-

own souls. We can then widen this dialogue to an
interchange with others, as was done for example at
the Goetheanum Faust Conference that was held in
collaboration with the Goethe Institute this summer.

The activities of the Rudolf Steiner Archives encompass an unbe-
