1-marks question

1. Write the expression for Bohr’s radius in hydrogen atom.

2. The total energy of an electron in the first excited state of hydrogen atom is - 3.4 eV. What is potential
energy of the electron in this state ?
1
3. The activity of a radioactive element drops to 16th of its initial value in 32 Years. Find the mean life of the
sample.
4. The half life of a radioactive substance is 30 s. Calculate the decay constant.
5. Define the terms half life period and write the relation between them.

2-marks question

6. The half life of a given radioactive nuclide is 138.6 days. What is the mean life of this nuclide ? After how
much time will a given sample of this radioactive nuclide will get reduced to only 12.5 %, of its initial
value
7. The decay constant for a given radioactive nuclide has a value of 1.386 day-1. After how much time will a
given sample of this radionuclide get reduced to only 6.25 % of its present number ?

3-marks question

8. Derive an expression for the average life of a radionuclide. Give its relationship with the half life.
9. A star converts all its hydrogen to helium achieving 100% helium composition. It then converts helium to
carbon via the reaction
3 2He46C12 Q (7.27 MeV).
The mass of the star is 5.0 X 10 Kg & it generates energy at the rate of 5 X 103 Watt. How long will it
32

take to convert all the helium in to carbon at this rate ?

5-marks question

10. Using the Bohr’s model calculate the speed of the electron in a hydrogen atom in the n=1,2 and 3 levels.
Calculate the orbital period in each of these levels.

1 Mark Question

1. What is a semiconductor diode? Give the symbol representing the same.

2. Define Depletion layer? Why it is named as depletion layer.

2 Mark Question

3. Discuss about the forward bias condition of a p-n junction diode. Also draw its characteristic curve.

4. Discuss about the reverse bias condition of a p-n junction diode. Also draw its characteristic curve.

5. Discuss about the reverse bias condition of a Zener diode. Also draw its characteristic curve.

3 Mark Question

6. Explain the working of a diode as a Half wave rectifier and give its input output waveforms.

7. Explain the working of a diode as a Full wave rectifier and give its input output waveforms.

8. What is a photodiode? Explain the working of it.

9. The current in the forward bias (mA) is known to be more than the current in the revers bias (μA).
What is the reason then to operate the photodiode in reverse bias?

10. What is an LED? Briefly explain the working of it. What are its advantages over incandescent low
power lamps?

11. In a zener regulated power supply a zener diode with Vz=6.0V is used for regulation. The load current
is to be 4.0mA and the unregulated input is 10.0V. What should be the value of series resistors?
