Write down the definition of the terms in the table below.
Term Definition
Sexuality Sexuality is a key part of human nature. People with intellectual disability experience the
same range of sexual thoughts, attitudes, feelings, desires, fantasies and activities as
everyone else. Sexuality has psychological, biological and social aspects and is influenced
by individual values and attitudes
Personal identity Personal identity is the concept you develop about yourself that evolves over the course
of your life. This may include aspects of your life that you have no control over, such as
where you grew up or the color of your skin, as well as choices you make in life, such as
how you spend your time and what you believe.
Spirituality Spirituality is a broad concept with room for many perspectives. In general, it includes a
sense of connection to something bigger than ourselves, and it typically involves a search
for meaning in life. As such, it is a universal human experience something that touches us
all.
Cultural identity Cultural identity is the identity or feeling of belonging to a group. It is part of a person's
self-conception and self-perception and is related to nationality, ethnicity, religion, social

QUESTION 19
In one paragraph, describe one common myth that surrounds sexuality in older people, and why this myth is not true.
MYTH: Older adults are unable to have sex because their bodies are too old or sick.
FACT: Some changes within the aging body can alter or complicate sexual expression and declines in sexual
functioning may occur, but desire and interest remain. The use of medications to treat sexual dysfunction in both
men and women has made it possible for people to remain sexually active late into life. One study revealed 61
percent of people over 60 said their sex life today was the same or better than in their 40s, and 26 percent of
those over 75 remain sexually active.

Australian Vietnamese Women’s Association Incorporated (AVWA)
b) What is the advantage of older people continuing with social groups and activities that they have been involved
in for some time?
QUESTION 22
You are talking to a friend outside of work about the number of multicultural clients where you work. He says ‘How
do you manage to work with all those different kinds of people? How do you know that you are not going to offend
someone by mistake?’
Write down how you would answer your friend.
Issue 1:
Physical and Mental Health
Many older adults maintain good health and are fully able to function both physically and
mentally well into their later years. However, the biological effects of aging do lead to more
physical and mental health problems among the senior population than in younger age
groups. As we age, muscles and bones begin to weaken, we lose eyesight and hearing, and
mobility often becomes limited.
Issue 2:
Health Care Costs/Nursing Home Care
Older adults visit the doctor and stay in the hospital more often than other age groups.
Medicare helps cover some health care costs for seniors, however most are left to pay for
about half of their medical bills on their own, which can cost thousands of dollars each year.
Issue 3:
Bereavement, Social Isolation, and Loneliness
Seniors tend to have fewer opportunities for social engagement than younger age groups.
They retire from jobs, children move away, friends and spouses pass away, and eventually
they may become housebound if they lose the ability to drive or become ill.
The Aging Process: Normal Aging. The aging process happens during all stages of an individual's life span. The
changes aging individuals experience are not necessarily harmful. With age, hair thins and turns gray. Skin thins,
becomes less elastic, and sags.
It is important to eat a balanced diet for health and wellbeing. Good nutrition and regular meals combined with
physical activity can improve your strength and help fight infection. Eating a variety of healthy foods can improve
your energy levels and help you maintain a healthy weight.
Aging in place is a term used to describe a person living in the residence of their choice, for as long as they are
able, as they age. This includes being able to have any services (or other support) they might need over time as
their needs change.
b) Choose one of the challenges that you identified above. What support could be provided to someone with this
challenge so they could continue their community participation?
QUESTION 27
You will have your own perception of different cultures and practices depending on your own beliefs and values, and
your own life experiences.
What can you do to prepare yourself to work with all types of different cultures – some of which will have values and
beliefs very different from you own?
Australia is a vibrant, multicultural country. This rich, cultural diversity is one of our greatest strengths. It is
central to our national identity. In 1975, the Racial Discrimination Act came into force, making discrimination in
different parts of public life against the law
QUESTION 29
a) What does a cultural interpreter do?
A cultural mediator/interpreter/translator plays a critical role in facilitating successful communication with
students and families who speak a language other than English. An interpreter is an individual to translates
spoken language from one language to another.
An interpreter's role is to facilitate communication between two or more people who use different languages,
being either spoken or signed. The interpreter is not responsible for what is said by either party, but is responsible
for ensuring that everything that is said is communicated accurately in the other language.
QUESTION 30
List two strategies you could use if you were involved in a cross-cultural conflict with a work colleague and needed to
resolve it.
Strategy 1: Ask for frequent expansion on points that you are unfamiliar with, especially if they relate to cultural
issues.
Strategy 2: Investigate the cultural norms of the people that are involved in the dispute. It could be a matter of
misunderstanding. This is also useful for validating cultural claims.

their dinner!
A team of carers is experiencing conflict. There is an Aboriginal worker on the team (Barry), a Muslim worker
(Ahmed) and two white Australian workers (Janice and Julia). It started when Ahmed accused Barry of being lazy
and rude – ‘He never rushes, even when we are rushed off our feet and he doesn’t even look me in the eye when
he talks to me.’
Barry retaliates by accusing Ahmed of taking time off all the time to ‘pray on his stupid prayer mat’.
Janice responds by saying, ‘For God’s sake, why can’t you just be normal like the rest of us?’
Janice and Julia get caught up in it with, both Ahmed and Barry complaining all the time about each other and
trying to get them to take sides.
Their conflict is impacting on their clients.
1. What are the cultural issues that are impacting on this team?
2. Is there a legal requirement for Ahmed to be allowed time to pray during work hours?
6. What could management put in place to eliminate bias and discrimination in the workplace?

Fadi’s son has put in a formal complaint about the food that is served to his father. Fadi told his son that the food
is mainly western style, is very dull and often tough. As he is a Muslim, Fadi does not eat pork.
The staff always provide another alternative when pork is on the menu but yesterday, when pork sausages were on
the menu, the only alternative was fish – which Fadi’s has never liked.
When he said he didn’t want sausages or fish he was told he would have to have a Vegemite sandwich instead.
This is hardly enough for the main meal of the day!
There are many different nationalities and it is impossible for every cultural food requirement to be catered for all
the time. But the kitchen is keen to help out as much as they can so long as it is within their tight budget.

Rachella is one of your clients. Rachella suffers from anxiety and depression for while she takes medication and is
monitored by her GP. Rachella also has counselling once per fortnight.
Today Rachella is very fidgety. She is pacing up and down, seemingly in a world of her own. When you ask her if
she is OK she snaps at you and says “Of course I’m not all right – nothing is all right. You know nothing!! No-one
can help me – I’m sick of everything – I just can’t go on anymore”.
When you ask what the matter is she gets angry and tells you to just leave her alone.
1. From her manner you think that she may be suicidal – you know that she has attempted suicide once before. As a
personal care attendant this is beyond the role of your job. What will you do?
2. What action needs to be taken to protect Rachella from harm until medical help can be obtained?

TASK SUMMARY:
Students will be observed assisting three clients with activities of daily living.
If your assessor sees that you have not shown appropriate skills or knowledge during any of these tasks, they will give
you some feedback and you will need to do the specific task again.
If your assessor marks any of your written answers as incorrect, you will need to either:
Answer the questions that were incorrect in writing.
Answer the questions that were incorrect verbally.
INSTRUCTIONS:
During one of your assessor’s workplace visits, you will need to demonstrate that you can support three clients
undertaking activities of living.
‘Activities of living’ refer to everyday tasks that we do as part of our normal life. This can include activities such as:
Gardening
Cleaning
Domestic laundry
Meal or snack preparation
Shopping
Attending to financial matters and personal correspondence.
You need to choose three clients to work with and identify one ‘activity of living’ that each client is interested in, and
where you can provide support. You must plan the activities prior to the assessment.
You must obtain the permission of your clients and your supervisor prior to conducting this task. You will also need to
liaise with each client’s carer.
Identify a client to work with and identify one activity of living of interest to the client?
Obtain permission from the client and your supervisor to conduct the task?
Locate the client’s individualised plan and refer to this for information about the client?
Seek feedback on your plan from the client’s carer – this may either be done by phone or face to face. Did you
amend the plan if necessary?
Remind the older person of any potential risks throughout the task?
Discuss the activity with the client allowing them to take the lead role where they are able?
Obtain appropriate aids and equipment appropriate to the client’s needs (eg mobility devices, gardening
equipment, specialised equipment etc)?
Demonstrate an inclusive attitude and cater for individual needs, adapting the environment where necessary to
cater for these?
Deal sensitively with any age or disability-related conditions that the person faces?
Provide support to undertake the task while encouraging independence wherever possible?
Communicate effectively , both verbally and non-verbally, with the client taking into account their needs?
Following the observations, your assessor will ask you a set of verbal questions about the activities of living, your
clients and their carers.
