Problems
1. How did she come up to the idea of becoming the first female president of the
Philippines?
2. How did people power revolution helped her to be positioned as president?
3. What are her primary contributions that made a big impact in the Philippines during

Hypotheses
1. Cory Aquino decided to run as a President because of Ninoy Aquino's death and
she wants democracy back.
2. As Aquino proved to the people that she can do the responsibilities of being
president even if she is a woman it led to people power revolution which helped her to
be positioned as president.
3. Corazon Aquino changed the perspectives of the people about the ability of
women.

Summary
Corazon "Cory" Aquino, the wife of Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino Jr. has no great
interest in politics in the first place. But when her husband died it became a symbol of
hope for Ninoy's supporters. Despite of her shyness, she found herself heading to
helm of the opposition as she became increasingly present at demonstrations and
rallies. The opponent of Marcos convinced Corazon to challenge Marcos and to
persuade her that she is the chosen instrument to fight for democracy. They also
believed that Cory was the ideal candidate to challenge Marcos. As she ran, Cory
gathered 1.2 million signatures which made her become the candidate for president
and as the opponent of the reigning Ferdinand Marcos.

In late 1985, Marcos called for a snap election and Aquino ran for president. On
February 7, 1986, the Batasang Pambansa proclaimed Marcos as the winner. But it
was believed that allegations were made of electrical fraud which led Cory and her
allies to launch a civil disobedience campaign which was called, the "People Power
Revolution” that proved that the Filipinos wanted change and will fight for democracy
for peaceful means. The triumph of the revolution made Corazon “Cory” Aquino, the
first woman president of the Philippines.

As she became the President, she made a big impact with her primary
contributions in the country. Her administration set aside the 1973 constitution but
utilized an interim Freedom constitution. She gave concern for civil liberties, human
rights, and peace talks with communist insurgents and Muslim secessionists. She also
focused on bringing back economic health confidence. She convinced the U.S to
withdraw in military from remaining bases in the Philippines with help from Mt.
Pinatubo, which erupted in 1991 and buried several military installations as of the
provision of the 1987 constitution ratified on February 2, 1987. Another important
project of Corazon Aquino is the Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program which
expanded the scope of the agricultural land that could be under the land reform to
provide land for the landless Filipinos.

Interpretation of Findings:
Based on our research, the administration of Corazon Aquino was more than
restoring democracy, as people would think. But also about her love for our nation as
she commemorates her candidacy to the death of her husband Benigno “Ninoy”
Aquino.

More than that, in leading the People Power Revolution, she strongly advocated
peace and unity among the Filipinos even though she is a woman. She bravely stood
up and proved that it's not all about the gender, it's all about what a leader truly is, that
is determined to make the Philippines a country by the people as she won the battle
against Marcos.

Lastly, as she led the nation, she became a good role model not only for women
but for everyone. The continuity of democracy and the presence of the constitution to
present day gave a big impact on the Philippines and also to the citizens. Her
contributions made a great difference to the lives of the Filipinos and also to our
beloved country, Philippines. Therefore, we conclude that all of our hypotheses were
not rejected at all because they were somehow true and connected to what we have
studied.

Limitations:
We have gathered data and information through the Laguna State Polythecnic
University - San Pablo City Campus library and several articles from the internet. We
conducted this study because we want to know the facts of Cory Aquino’s candidacy
as the first female president, how did she won, how did people power revolution
helped her to become a president and what are her major contributions to the
Philippines.
