Safety instructions

The device complies with the safety requirements of DIN EN 61010-part1

(VDE 0411-part1); protection class I.
Before connecting the device, please note the mains voltage adjusted at the
factory; it is specified on the device rear (230 V / 115 V, 48 ... 60 Hz).
Please also note the safety information in the separate documentation
”Operating manual” Part 1 for the SCOUT 55.

1 Introduction to operation with computer or terminal

The SCOUT 55 amplifier enables measurements from passive transducers.

Main characteristics:
D Transducers that may be connected: S/G full and half bridges, inductive full
and half bridges, piezoresistive and potentiometric transducers, LVDTs
D 10-digit alphanumeric display
D Operation via membrane-type keyboard; single keys can be locked
D 2 peak-value memories for maximum and minimum value, and envelope
curve and current value
D 4 limit switches
D RS-232 serial interface for connection of a computer or printer
D Parameter memory for storage of up to 4 data sets
D Control inputs and outputs (electrically isolated by optocouplers)

This manual explains operation of the SCOUT 55 with a terminal or computer.

The connection of a computer via the RS-232 is described for setting all the
parameters and for obtaining the measurements.
All information necessary to adapt the amplifier to your measurement task via
Terminal are described in a separate operation manual ”Operating manual −
Part 1, Amplifier for panel mounting SCOUT 55”.

2 RS-232-C serial interface

2.1 General notes
The RS-232-C serial interface is called serial interface, because data is trans-
mitted successively bit by bit. General notes on the interface’s properties are:
D relatively ”low” transmission speed
D requires a 3-core cable for transmission in both directions (duplex or bi-
directional) as minimum arrangement.
D only one device can be connected (point-to-point connection)

START 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 PARITY /STOP

Logic 1

Logic 0

Fig. 1: Line level of character Y with negative logic

A Start bit is set before each character (data byte). Then follow the data bits
and a STOP bit. Due to the fact that data is transmitted successively, the
transmitting speed must correspond to the receiving speed.
The number of bits per second is called baud rate. The exact receiver baud
rate is synchronized with the START bit with each byte transmitted. Then fol-
low the data bits that are all of the same length. When the STOP bit is
reached, the receiver changes to wait state until reactivated by the next
START bit.
Data transmission is controlled with the X-ON (DC1) and X-OFF (DC3) soft-
ware handshake.
If the device is ready for data transmission, it issues the X-ON (DC1) control
character. If it cannot receive any data, e.g. if there is no free memory space,
the X-OFF (DC3) control character is issued.

3 Communication with the SCOUT 55

3.1 Connecting the computer to the SCOUT 55

On the device rear there is a serial RS-232 interface for connecting a com-
puter or terminal. For RS−232 interfacing, a cable (1.5 m length) with free
ends and a 9−pole subminiature jack* (Order no.:3−3301.0104) is supplied.
Refer to the below figure for the wiring and pin assignment.

Abb. 1: Computer/SCOUT 55 interfacing

For connecting the SCOUT 55 to a computer please proceed as follows:

D Connect both systems to the mains, but do not yet switch them on.
D Connect the interface as shown in the figure.
D Make sure that the computer’s interface configuration (baud rate, data for-
mat) does in any case match the SCOUT 55 default settings. Otherwise,
the interface configuration has to be adapted via the keyboard (see SCOUT
55 operating manual, part 1).
D Finally switch on both systems.
It is sufficient to connect a simple line printer with a printing speed of 4 sec-
onds/line. 12 columns are printed corresponding to a line length of 132 char-
acters.

3.2 Activation of the RS-232-C interface

Use the below instruction to activate the HBM interpreter:
* CTRL R (DC2) - Computer operation without echo
Enter the control character to set the device to the remote control state and
lock all functions except for the display functions.
Computer operation without echo means that no control characters are trans-
mitted back to the MVD 2555 but only the generated data. With the RS-232-C
interface any information that has been generated will be output immediately
after it has been transmitted completely to the output buffer.
Use the below instruction to deactivate the remote−control state:
CTRL A (SOH); see also DCL instruction on page 11.

4 Instruction set for the SCOUT 55

4.1 Important conventions

These conventions and general notes are to facilitate work with the
HBM-interpreter instructions.

Notation
D All instructions can be entered in lower-case or upper-case letters.

Instruction abbreviation
D The instruction abbreviations comprise 3 or 5 characters and, depending
on the instruction, a list of parameters that are separated by commas.

e.g. BDR6,2,1 (x)

Blanks
D With parameters, preceding and subsequent blanks are suppressed.

Types of instruction
D Interrogation instructions are marked by a question mark (?), they are used
to read out information.

e.g. BDR?

Responses
D The device responses given in the examples are printed in italics.

HBM A0241-5.3 en
SCOUT55 9

End of instruction
with input instructions:
D The end-of-instruction character is marked with (x). Permissible end-of-in-
structions are:

”;”, LF, LFCR, CRLF

with output instructions:
D The end-of-instruction character is marked with (y). The end-of-instruction
is always CRLF.

Input / output numbers

D The numbers that have been entered are converted into the numerical type
used with the respective parameter.
D Numbers are always output as fixed-point numbers.

Interfaces − serial
D With the RS-232-C-interface, computer communication starts with the per-
missible control characters.

’ CTRL R’ or ’CTRL B’ and is terminated by ’CTRL A’ or the DCL instruction.

D With serial interfaces, every instruction generates an output (response).

Response behavior
D Output instructions − marked by ? − always generate output data.
D Change parameters.
D When parameters effecting the measurement are changed, a calibration
will be carried out after input; the calibration may take 1..3s.

Instruction format
All instructions used have a specific format. Generally, there are two types of
instructions:

Setup instructions:
The SCOUT 55 is adjusted via the computer.
Example: BDR6,2,1 (x)
0 (y)
The interface has been adjusted to 9600 Baud, even parity and 1 STOP-Bit.

A0241-5.3 en HBM
