Objective

To work for a daily publication dedicated to covering important stories in the community. Looking for a newsroom
that is supportive but also challenges its reporters to grow continuously and gives them the tools and feedback to do
so. Seeking an organization dedicated to diversity, transparency and watchdog journalism. Interested in covering
beats that could offer a human rights focus.

Experience

Education reporter, Statesman Journal August 2015 to Present


• Covers nine preK-12 school districts, four higher education institutions and education policy at the Oregon
State Capitol. Focuses on Salem-Keizer Public Schools.
• Writes news briefs, daily stories, enterprise and investigative pieces, all with the purpose of holding educational
institutions and leaders accountable.
• Cultivates sources, organizes compelling stories in a variety of styles and formats, interprets complex data and
navigates combative or reluctant interviews.
• Published more than 1,000 stories in first three years.
• Nearly doubled average pageview count and engagement time per story in the last year, bringing in
thousands of readers per story, and hundreds of hours of engagement time. Increased loyal readership via
social media pages and continuous work to build relationships in the community.
• Co-created a diversity team within the newsroom to evaluate the paper’s practices in sourcing, reporting,
writing and engagement with underserved populations in our community, as well as reflect on paper’s hiring
practices.
• Created a trauma-informed team in the newsroom that works with statewide experts to develop best
practices for journalists while on assignment and/or in the newsroom.
• Continuously expands skills in still photography and social video creation.
• Recipient of three news awards, including one for education coverage from the Oregon Newspaper
Publishers Association and beat reporting on homelessness from the USA Today Network.

Intern, Statesman Journal June 2015 to August 2015


• Wrote stories on a variety of subjects, including crime and breaking news, sports, causes/nonprofits,
homelessness, environment and politics.
• Discovered stories from established sources in the community, via press releases, listening to the police
scanner and exploring passion topics of the paper.

• Bachelor of Arts Degree in Politics and French/Francophone Studies.
• Earned academic, leadership and performing arts scholarships. Participated in a variety of campus
organizations, including student government and the student newspaper, “The Collegian.”
• Completed a two-year, work-study position as a writer for the university’s marketing department.
