DISSERTATION TOPIC – Post-Consumer waste in construction

HYPOTHESIS - Using Post-Consumer waste in construction can help in reducing the carbon footprint
on Earth.

ABSTRACT:
Nature is something we cannot afford to offend, and yet we insist on being careless and deplete our
natural resources resulting in the increase of Carbon footprint on Earth. This happens in the
construction process as well. We use materials in construction that not only harm the environment
during production but also after they are discarded. The number of such materials is increasing day
by day on Earth and causing various problems like blocking rivers or drains, causing infectious
diseases, increasing the carbon footprint and overflowing the landfills. These are the materials that
take hundreds and thousands of years to decompose.
The purpose of this study is to construct a built structure within the lap of nature without depleting
it. To make a habitable space in the Jungle without destroying the Jungle. Therefore, using those
materials in construction which are currently of no use for one, materials that have been used before
but are now discarded and can be used in their current state for other purposes, such materials are
termed as Post-Consumer waste. These include plastic bottles, glass bottles, tin cans, newspapers,
etc. As these materials are available in abundance, especially at tourist spots, these can be well used
for construction in their current state without using any more energy in recycling.
No one likes to see scattered waste on a beautiful natural site, but it is the sad reality. This is the view
of most places nowadays. Yes, it is due to human carelessness and we can spread awareness about it.
But, to solve the issue at hand, we can rather use these materials instead of recycling them. So, the
method used for this study leads from studying and identifying various types of post-consumer
waste,(their properties, the way they are produced, their impact on the environment and their
carbon footprint) to understanding how can these materials be used in construction, various
construction techniques and numerous examples around the world where people are actually
concerned and using these techniques.
The research will definitely be helpful as it explores different materials and implies their usage in
saving the environment or protecting it from more harm.
The research also creates awareness as it aims at looking out for various construction techniques to
save the Earth from drowning in the huge expanse of harmful gases and emissions.
