concrete blocks manufacturing venture in Bangalore. VNB Concrete blocks Pvt
Ltd is synonymous with concrete blocks and are pioneers in the field. More than
one decade of intensive research and comprehensive survey amongst engineers,
architects, builders and contractors has enabled us to innovate value added
blocks.
VNB Concrete blocks Pvt Ltd has today over 2000 proud and satisfied customers
in corporate and group housing sector and over 3800 individuals in the home
segment. Practically, VNB blocks have been patronized by every leading builder,
thus holding testimony to company’s superior technology and commitment to
quality products. Company’s incredible range of blocks take care of every
conceivable need for the user. The company have acquired a Coimbatore made
busser block plant which is semi-automated machine that can produce 5 different
sizes of high quality blocks. The company manufactures over 25000 blocks per
day. It also have an effective transportation system which offers quick and timely
delivery to its customers. The solid blocks are with superior strength, better water
absorption and density parameters. They are easy to build even during monsoons
with low setting time as compared to conventional bricks. They come in various
size and specifications suitable for load-bearing and non-load bearing
applications. The company manufactures 4 inch, 6 inch & 8 inch concrete blocks.
The venture was incorporated under companies act on March, 2003. The
manufacturing plant is located at Hadosiddapura village, Off Sarjapur road,
Bangalore 560035. The proprietor of the company is Mr Rudresh Reddy.N.
PROCESS UNDERGONE DURING MANUFACTURING

Cement concrete dense/ hollow bricks and blocks are very popular and are
extensively used in building construction throughout the country because of the
many advantages such as durability, strength and structural stability, fire
resistance, insulation and sound absorption it possess. The cement concrete
blocks have an attractive appearance and are readily adaptable to any style of
architecture. It leads itself to a wide variety of surface finishes for both exterior
and interior walls. The blocks are used for both load bearing and non-load
bearing walls. The blocks are made out of these blocks in masonry there is stone
chips. With the use of these blocks in masonry there is saving in cement, steel,
time and labour as compared with burnt bricks masonry. This saving, therefore,
brings down the cost of construction considerably.
The process of manufacture of cement concrete hollow blocks involves the
following 5 Stages:
1. Proportioning: The determination of suitable amounts of raw materials needed
to produce concrete of desired quality under given conditions of mixing, placing
and curing is known as proportioning.
2. Mixing: The objective of thorough mixing of aggregates, cement and water is to
ensure that the cement- water completely covers the surface of the aggregates. All
the raw materials including water are collected in a concrete mixer, which is
rotated for about 1 ½ minutes. The prepared mix is discharged from the mixer
and consumed within 30 minutes.
3. Compacting: The purpose of compacting is to fill all air pockets with concrete as
a whole without movement of free water pockets or layers with higher water
content and poor quality of the product.
4. Curing: Hollow blocks removed from the mould are protected until they are
sufficiently hardened to permit handling without damage. This may take about
24 hours in a curing yard to permit complete miniaturization for at least 21 days.
When the hollow blocks are cured by immersing them in a water tank. The
longer the curing time permitted the better the product.
5. Drying: Concrete shrinks slightly with loss of moisture. It is therefore essential
that after curing is over, the blocks should be allowed to dry out gradually in
shade so that the initial drying shrinkage of the blocks is completed before they
are used in the construction work. Hollow blocks are stacked with their cavities
horizontal to facilitate thorough passage of air. Generally a period of 7 to 15 days
of drying will bring the blocks to the desired degree of dryness to complete the
initial shrinkage. After this the blocks are ready for use in construction work.

DETAIL OF THE PROBLEM IDENTIFIED
After visiting the manufacturing unit the various problems faced by the firm are as
follows:
 Obtaining certificate of incorporation from government after satisfying all
the needs required is a problems. And getting Non objection certificate
(NOC) from the pollution control board, BESCOM and from the local
government body is a bit challenging process. The NOC is obtained only
after fulfilling all the required documents to the government. It’s a lengthy
process and time consuming to start a venture.
 Large investment is required to start a company, as to buy the machineries
used in manufacturing requires huge capital.
 Sometimes demand will not be equal to the supply due to various constraints
such as water, electricity and supply of raw materials.
 Maintenance of machineries is a big challenge faced by the company. If there
is any problem found with the functioning of machinery they need to contact
the company from which the machineries are bought and get the
machineries serviced. The whole process requires lot of time and money.
 If the raw materials such as cement, Robo dust, water are not supplied on
time, the whole manufacturing process will stopped due to which the
company cannot satisfy the needs of the customers.
 Managing the labour is a big challenge faced by the company.
 Maintaining the quality standards is a must.
 The main problem faced by the company is water. During summer season
water becomes the main problem for the company. As water is the major
raw material during manufacturing. If there is shortage in water, the whole
process of manufacturing will be a delay.
THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK OF THE STUDY

As per my observation almost all the concrete block manufacturing units face the
similar problems. Maintaining of the company is not a simply process. The
proprietor of the company must have all the required managerial skills such as
proper planning, organising, and have a control over the things which is required
to manage the organisation. Maintaining and having a successful organisation is
not a simple thing, the authority must organise and control the things accordingly.
By hearing the problems of the manufacturing unit I realized even the large
organisations consist lot of other problems. If the authority of the organisation
have the skills of managing the situations effectively and efficiently then the
venture may survive for a longer period of time and can be successful in the
competitive market.
PROBLEM SOLVING

 The first problem is to get the NOC from the government. As it is a lengthy process
and time consuming to visit the government offices, pollution control board,
BESCOM(Bangalore electricity supply), the solution given to the problem was to go
digital. In this modern era every process can be done online without visiting the office
physically.
 The second problem identified was large investment is required to start a company.
The solution given to the problem was: If the company satisfies all the conditions and
have all necessary documents the company can avail loan from the financing
organisation/ Banks.
 The third problem is sometimes demand will be not equal to the supply due to various
constraints such as water, electricity and raw materials. The solution given to the
problem was to adopt an alarm system for the stock maintenance. And make sure that
the needs of the customers are satisfied.
 The next problem was maintenance of machineries is a big challenge faced by the
company. If there is any problem found with the functioning of machinery they need to
contact the company from which the machineries are bought and get the machineries
serviced. The whole process requires lot of time and money. The solution given to the
problem was to appoint a person who looks at the machinery and functioning and the
company should make sure that the machineries are serviced at least once in 6 months.
 The fifth problem found is; if the raw materials such as cement, Robo dust, water are
not supplied on time, the whole manufacturing process will stopped due to which the
company cannot satisfy the needs of the customers. The solution given to the problem
is to adopt a minimum stock level alarming system where the authority gets a
notification when the stock reaches minimum level. Where they can order for the stock
before a week or two.
 The sixth problem found was managing the labour is a big challenge faced by the
company. The solution to the problem was to provide incentives and use labour appraisal
technique such as by providing proper incentives and bonus to keep the work force in a
good relation and friendly environment.
 The last and major problem faced by the company is water. During summer season
water becomes the main problem for the company. As water is the major raw material
during manufacturing. If there is shortage in water, the whole process of manufacturing
will be a delay. The solution given to the problem is to adopt water reusable technique
where generally the water after curing process gets wasted. Instead of wasting the water
the company can reuse the same water by installing a water filter and reuse it again.
CONCLUSION

Therefore I can conclude that every business has a risk, without risk factors
no organisation exists. Even a medium organisations like the concrete
hollow blocks manufacturing units have risk factors and plenty of problems
faced. In order to overcome these problems we have to take the necessary
actions. For each and every problem there will be alternative solutions. We
have to find those alternatives and implement to the business for the
business to become successful. If we implement the alternatives in a right
way and in right situation or time we can run any business efficiently and
effectively.
