Our unit topic is fractions. We chose this topic because it is considered a difficult topic to
understand for students. We thought that we can prepare more activities about it so that the
students can understand it and solve the related problems easily. We allocated the time based
on the time given in the formal curriculum for the objectives that we want to teach. The
ASSURE model helped us to prepare our unit and lesson plans. As our audience is 5th grade
students, we assumed that they should have learned unit, proper, improper and mixed
fractions and some basic properties about them in the previous year. We determined the
prerequisite skills or knowledge by checking the 4th year curriculum objectives since they are
necessary for our topic. Also, when planning this course, we assumed that the students had
sufficient technological tools and materials. We assumed that they knew how to use the
applications used in these activities, so we did not provide any information about it. In these
unit and lesson plans, we tried to use different instructional methods. We determined the
objectives according to the content and lesson hours. After that, with the help of the ABCD
model of stating standards and objectives step, we wrote the objectives properly. We worked
hard and prepared different activities. With these activities, the students will learn new
information and practice them. Even they can discover some pieces of information in the
activities that we prepared. While we were planning, we spent most of our time to make
decision about which application is appropriate for the objectives that we chose. That is about
selecting strategies, technologies, media, and materials (STMM) step of the ASSURE model.
We spent most of our time to this step because we wanted to support our instruction with
appropriate materials. We planned our teaching role for utilizing the technology, media, and
materials to help students achieve the learning objectives. We utilized these technology,
media, and materials to introduce the instruction, activate the prior knowledge of students,
summarize the unit, and assess the students. Also, our purpose to use them is to make the
lesson interesting and grab the students’ attention. In this way, the students’ participation will
increase during the lesson. To be more effective in our instruction, we need learners’ active
participation. We tried to provide this with require learner participation part of the model in
which activities allow them to practice the new knowledge or skills and to receive feedback
on their efforts before being formally assessed. In the evaluate and revise part, we tried to
evaluate our students and also the instruction and the materials with different techniques.
Unlike traditional assessment methods, we tried to use observation method. The reason
behind is that traditional assessment methods increase the anxiety of students which causes
unsuccess. With this formative assessment, we tried to be more effective in our next
instructions. Constructivist theory has affected us to plan this unit. We wanted our students to
connect the prior information with the new ones and practice them with different activities
actively.
