1. The assignment contains 8 questions from 4 major topics from Module I.
2. Each question carries 5 marks and hence assignment will be evaluated for a total of
40 marks which be scaled down to 10 marks.
3. You should TYPE the solution in the word document. Alternatively, you can also write
down solution by hand and take a snap shot of it. However, you should only insert
image in the word document.
4. Template for word document in which solutions should be typed is given at the end.
5. After completing the assignment in a word document, convert it into one single PDF
file with your registration number as filename.
6. Only one PDF file in your registration number should be uploaded. (I will discard
image files, Word files, Google drive link etc.)
9. Submission beyond the due date will lead to reduction of marks considerably.
2. X- Rays of wavelength 0.24 𝑛𝑚 are Compton scattered and the scattered beam is observed
at an angle of 60° relative to the incident beam. Determine (a) the wavelength of the scattered
X rays (b) the energy of the scattered X ray photons (c) the kinetic energy of the scattered
electrons.
4. It is known that the nucleus of an atom is of the order of 10−14 𝑚 in diameter. For an
electron to be confined to a nucleus, its de Broglie wavelength would have to be on this order
of magnitude or smaller. What would be the kinetic energy of an electron confined to this
region? Would you expect to find an electron in a nucleus? Explain.
5. Consider a freely moving particle which is confined in a one dimensional infinite potential
well of width 𝐿. Using uncertainty principle, estimate the least energy of the particle.
6. Luttappi, a cute, innocent devil steps out of a 16th-story window and fall 50 𝑚 into a pool.
Mayavi, a little devil, takes a picture of the 75 kg Luttappi just before he makes a splash, using
an exposure time of 5.0 ms. Find (a) the Luttappi’s de Broglie wavelength at this moment, (b)
the uncertainty of his kinetic energy measurement during the 5.0 𝑚𝑠 time interval. Write down
your inference from this calculation.
8𝜋ℎ𝑐 1
𝑢𝜆 𝑑𝜆 = 𝑑𝜆
𝜆5 𝑒 ℎ𝑐/𝜆𝑘𝑇 − 1
(a) Show that for long wavelengths and high temperatures it reduces to Rayleigh-Jeans law.
(b) Show that for short wavelengths it reduces to Wien’s distribution law.
