PURPOSE AND GOALS
The purpose of this curriculum guide is to provide students with a fundamental knowledge of Greek and
Latin root words and affixes that will equip them to determine the meanings of words in context as
readers in English language arts, science, and other content areas. Up to 70% of English vocabulary is
derived ultimately from Greek and Latin (90% in the sciences and technical realms.) Given the breadth
of reading that students are required or encouraged to do, no “word list” approach can offer a practicable
strategy for vocabulary instruction. Research in best practices supports the use of morphological
analysis for essential vocabulary development.

This guide has organized Greek and Latin roots in a scope and sequence that seems best suited to the
frequency of derived vocabulary encountered by readers in grades K through 3. Root words and affixes,
i.e. morphemic analysis, will be introduced explicitly to elucidate the definitions of English words of which
they are components and cognates on a developmentally appropriate level. The ultimate goal is for
beginning readers to recognize these morphemes in preparation to use this strategy independently.
Contextualized direct instruction and repeated exposure will empower students to understand unfamiliar
words when encountered in texts and to establish a foundation for determining the meanings of unknown
words in future reading.

THE SPECIAL EDUCATION PROGRAM USES THE FOLLOWING

CURRICULUM WITH APPROPRIATE MODIFICATION BEING MADE TO
ADDRESS THE NEEDS OF THE INDIVIDUAL STUDENTS.

Notes: Many English words may be identified as having their origins in ancient Greek by their spelling (orthography from Greek ortho 'correct' or 'straight' + graph 'writing' + "conventional spelling") and pronunciation.
1. English words with a "ch" pronounced like a "k" come from Greek, e.g. chronology, chaos, chemistry, echo, archeology, psychiatrist
2. English words with "ph" pronounced like "f' come from Greek, e.g. phonics, photograph, physics, physiology, telephone, epitaph
3. Most English words beginning with a silent "p" come from Greek, e.g. psychology, pneumonia, psychiatrist
4. Some English words beginning with a silent consonant preceding an "n" are from Greek, e.g. mnemonic, gnome, Gnostic (but not gnarl, gnaw, gnash which are from Old Norse or Germanic languages)

L.K.5. With guidance and support from adults, explore word relationships and nuances in word meanings.
A. Sort common objects into categories (e.g., shapes, foods) to gain a sense of the concepts the categories represent.
B. Demonstrate understanding of frequently occurring verbs and adjectives by relating them to their opposites (antonyms).
C. Identify real-life connections between words and their use (e.g., note places at school that are colorful).
D. Distinguish shades of meaning among verbs describing the same general action (e.g., walk, march, strut, prance) by acting out the meanings.
L.K.6. Use words and phrases acquired through conversations, reading and being read to, and responding to texts.
