Chapter ONE
INTRODUCTION
The chapter briefly presents the main of this study. Additionally, this
chapter discusses the problem statement, objectives, scope, limitation and the
contribution of the study.

Rationale

Making a correct career choice is one of the major decisions of Grade 11

students in their academic and personal life. Usually, they are at a tender age of
16-17 in which inconclusiveness is a common problem in terms of choosing a
career. For most students influenced by parents, guardians, teachers, friends,
peers and many others, it is difficult because there are many factors to consider
especially for the first batch of Grades 11 and 12, in which the K-12 program is
fully implemented.

One of the main challenges of K-12 in improving Philippine education is to

provide quality basic education opportunities for all students, increasing the
quality of educational process and the transition from senior high school to
college levels, as well as improving the integration of the whole educational
system.

Senior high school education in the Philippines has a very important impact in the
country’s national development. The government invested in education in the
hope that students will become globally competitive. To become globally
competitive, the student must be eager to see themselves what career path will
they pursue in the near future. A planned and organized life and career goals can
contribute to their personal and professional growth. However, adolescents in the
Philippines compared to Western civilization (where K-12 system is patterned)
cannot make their own decisions at all times, especially when choosing career.
They are fond of soliciting advice from parents, teachers, friends, peers or
idolized figure. When they are confused, they cannot be able to finalize their
decision. Furthermore, they may also consider other important factors such as
financial status of parents, career opportunities, intellectual capacity and many
more. For these reasons, this proposal is pursued to investigate the factors of
inconclusive of Grade 11 students in making career choices.

Conceptual Framework
This study tends to identify the link between the socio-demographic information of
students and the impact of Inconclusiveness in Career Choices. Indicators such
as financial ability and practicality can cause the student to feel inconclusive
towards their desire career. For example, in some cases, a student born in an
average family with an income of 15,000 pesos per month is not enough to pay
their tuition of 37,000 per semester.
The researcher used indicators to know how these factors affect the students. This
study tends to gather information regarding their physical, mental, educational,
financial and emotional expressions of students dealing with Inconclusiveness in
Career Choices.
The researcher used random sampling in selecting students and produced
questionnaires to be filled out by the respondents. The survey will use quantitative
and qualitative data in gathering information from students.

Theory of Inconclusive Career Choices of Senior High School General Academic

John Holland’sTheory

Careers are determined by an interaction between our personality and the environment in
John Holland's Theory of Career Choice. We want jobs with people like us.

John Holland's Theory of Career Choice (RIASEC) maintains that in choosing a career,
people prefer jobs where they can be around others who are like them. They search for
environments that will let them use their skills and abilities, and express their attitudes and
values, while taking on enjoyable problems and roles. Behaviour is determined by an
interaction between personality and environment.
Holland’s theory is centred on the notion that most people fit into one of six personality types:

 Realistic
 Investigative
 Artistic
 Social
 Enterprising
 Conventional.
