Advice to Candidates_from examiners_____________________________________________________

Candidates who erase their initial attempt or use a pen to overwrite work originally done in pencil should be aware
that the process of scanning the work picks up all the versions with equal clarity, producing work that can be difficult
to read, it would be better to put a line through the original work and rewrite it further down the page.
Candidates should realise that where they have made an error, then it is more essential to show the details of the
solution of their quadratic equation and not just two incorrect answers from their calculator. The latter approach will
result in the method mark for the solution to this equation being withheld. The reason for this decision is that the
examination is a mathematics examination, not a calculator examination.
Candidates should understand the word ‘exact’, and they need to choose a method that leads to an exact answer, and
to continue working with exact arithmetic. If candidates opt for a method that is only possible with the use of the
calculator then no marks are possible. Likewise, if candidates have a suitable approach but then introduce decimals,
then again from that point onwards no further marks are possible.
Candidates need to understand that to acquire answers accurate to 3SF they are required to work to a much higher
degree of accuracy.
