Proof of Leadership

Leadership is defined as being a role model for a group of people. To me, being a leader

is being kind, considerate, and compassionate. It is being a guide to one person, a group, or an

entire organization. Every leader should be able to communicate and delegate. A leader’s main

job is to be able to reach out to the group/organization and control assignments and roles.

Communication also creates an emotional connection which is important for every leader to

build. How a leader communicates, casts a vision and sets goals. Every leader should exert self

control, take responsibility, and accept the consequences if something does not go the way they

expected. Leadership is all about having the drive to succeed, but also accepting the setbacks and

using them as motivation. Having a positive attitude is very important when leading a group of

people. A leader should be viewed as someone who is optimistic and has a positive outlook.

Becoming a trusted leader is one of my goals. I want people to look up to me as a role model. I

think leadership is more than just dictating a group of people. It is forming a community and

being the representative of the group. The leader of the group is the person everyone else looks

up to. They come to you for help and advice. To be a qualified leader you have to have patience

and be able to work well with others. To me, leadership is about character, communicating, and

having a positive attitude.

At the end of last year I was elected DECA President. Throughout last year I proved I

was capable of leading an executive board. I worked hard and made myself apart of every

project. As DECA President I have the opportunity to lead a group of great people. My first

objective as president was to hold a summer meeting and go over what my goals were for the

year, then to create group goals. I wanted to enhance the DECA bulletin board, and be able to

bond with the new executive board. The first main leadership activity I ran was the school-wide

DECA Cookout. My vice president, my social media coordinator, and I came up with a

promotional plan to get students to be enticed to buy tickets. We made hamburger tickets for

them, to buy and sell at breaks and lunches. After coming up with a layout and a plan for the day,

we made a slideshow to show the executive board our plan and their roles for the cookout. My

vice president and I assigned people different jobs, and had people rotate so others could go

work the Clubs & Activity Fair. The other project we came up with was the DECA Buddy

System. Our goal with this was to teach the incoming freshmen about DECA, and how to do a

proper role play. The goal of the Buddy System was to pair freshmen with experienced

upperclassmen. Juniors and seniors both experienced role plays and know what to expect at the

competition and from the judges. We wanted to teach the freshmen about different tips and tricks

juniors and seniors picked up along the way. I sent out google forms to find out everybody’s

categories, and tried my best to pair freshmen and juniors that had the same category. Many

students have begun to set up meetings with their buddies. Freshmen have told us they are

grateful for our help and guidance. I am planning to do more interactive activities to get all

members of DECA more involved. I strive to be honest, positive, kind, empathetic, and a

motivated leader. I want to make sure I am well respected and someone people can look up to.
