TOPIC: Literature: - Medieval Period


- King Arthur Wins the Sword and Slays the Giant
- Elements of a Story

Content Standard:
The learner demonstrates understanding of how Anglo-American literature and
other text types serve as means of enhancing the self; also how to use processing,
assessing, summarizing information, word derivation and formation strategies,
appropriate word order, punctuation marks and interjections to enable him/her to
participate actively in a speech choir.

Formation Standard:
The learners will become Vincentians, who express appreciation for the love given
by others.

With the use of various activities, the learners will be able to:
1. Describe the Arthurian Legend and its history
2. Identify the significant characters and places of the Arthurian Legend
3. Discuss the elements of a story through a creative presentation
4. Write their own short version of a story about King Arthur

Encounter 1

Introduction

 Show to the students of the famous heroic figures.


 Let the students choose whom they like and ask to describe the hero.

Interaction

 Tell the students that heroic tales were also famous a long time ago.
 Discuss the important events and the notable people during the Medieval Period
- Geoffrey Chaucer
- Canterbury Tales
- Metrical Romances
- Norman’s Conquest

Integration

 Distribute to the student the copy of the story “King Arthur Wins the Sword and Slays
the Giant”.
 Have the students study and read it in advance.

Encounter 2

Introduction

 Call the student assigned for the word of the day.


 Have students recapitulate the previous lesson.

Interaction

 Show to the students the animated version of the story.


 Discuss the overview of the story and ask the following questions:
o What is the story all about?
o Who is King Arthur?
 Divide the class into five groups.
 Each group will be assigned to a specific element.
o Group 1 - Characters and Setting
o Group 2 - Plot
 Exposition
 Rising Action
 Climax
 Falling Action
 Denoument
o Group 3 - Theme
o Group 4 - Point of view and Symbolism
 Each group will explain the elements through a creative presentation.

Integration

 Give students time to plan and prepare.

Encounter 3

Introduction

 Call the assigned student for the word of the day.


 Have students recapitulate the previous lesson/ activity.

Interaction

 Call groups 1 and 4 to discuss their assigned elements.


o Group 1 - Characters and Setting (through a character sketch)
 In this group, they are going to draw the image of the main characters in a
cartolina and put a little description on it.
o Group 4 - Point of view and Symbolism
 In this group, they are going to create a realia of the symbols or objects
found in the story. Someone from their group will discuss it to the class
through an advertisement. She will entice the people by telling the benefits
and use of that object as what was stated in the story.

Integration

 Provide further discussion on the elements presented.


 Allow students to ask questions.

Encounter 4

Introduction

 Call the assigned student for the word of the day.


 Have students recapitulate the previous lesson/ activity.

Interaction

 Call groups 2 and 3 to discuss their assigned elements.


o Group 2 - PLOT (dramatization)
 In this group, they are going to present a short dramatization on the plot
of the story.
o Group 3 - Theme
 In this group, they are going to sing group-composed song which will
highlight the theme of the story.

Integration

 Provide further discussion on the elements presented.


 Allow students to ask questions.

Encounter 5

Introduction

 Have the students study for 5 minutes.


 Let them prepare for a quiz.

Interaction

 Distribute worksheets.
o Students will answer a quiz to evaluate their knowledge on the story they have
read.
o It will also ask them to determine the meanings of the terms found or stated by
the characters in the story.

Integration

 Checking of answers.
 Assignment:
o Let the students write their own modern version of King Arthur’s story.
