You will receive a mixture containing an amount of sodium chloride, sand, polystyrene (Styrofoam), and iron
filings. You are to DESIGN an experimental procedure that will separate the mixture, and recover all four
components in their natural states (all are dry, granular solids). You will be graded on your formal report using
the attached rubric.
Prior to performing the lab, you need to complete rough draft of your Title, Introduction and Procedure
using the information below and the attached rubric
Title
Separating a Mixture Using Differences in Physical Properties
Introduction (Use the rubric on the back of this paper)
Objective (the goal of the lab) – Description of the purpose of the lab
Rational (Why do it?) – Discussion of how lab is important to society, science, and/or the study of
chemistry
Chemistry concepts (how will it be done?) – Discussion of all chemistry concepts used in the lab and
how they can be applied to separate a mixture.
Equipment Available:
(not all of this equipment
must be used)
magnet
Materials and Safety tweezers
List materials and relevant safety considerations. stir rod
hot plate
beaker
Procedure funnel
Describe the procedure in bullet form. filter paper
o Write so someone else could follow the instructions. ring stand
Include an illustration of the experimental set up scoop
water
evaporating dish
You need to complete a rough draft of your Title, Introduction, & Procedure before you actually
perform the Lab.
Print a HARD COPY of your rough draft (Title, Introduction, Procedure) and bring it to class on Block
1, next week.
