INTRODUCTION OF SYMPOSIUM

Symposium technique is one of the techniques of higher education. It is an


instructional technique which is used to achieve higher cognitive and affective
objectives.The purpose of higher learning is to develop the abilities of criticism,
appreciation, to respect the ideas and feelings of others, to present own ideas and seek
clarifications. It is an instructional technique which is used to achieve higher
cognitive and affective objectives. Symposium is a technique in which two or more
person under the direction of a chairman presents several speeches , which give
several aspect of one questionSymposium is a public meeting about a topic in which
people have discussions.An occasion at which people who have great knowledge of a
particular subjects meet in order to discuss a matter of interest.
MEANING & DEFINITON OF SYMPOSIUM

Meaning:
 The meaning of the term is a ‘meeting of persons to discuss a problem or a theme’.
The views on a theme are presented in a sequence. The specific aspect of a theme is
presented by an expert of the theme.
Definition:

1. Symposium is a method of group discussion in which 2 or more persons under the


direction of a moderator present separate speeches which gives several aspects of one
question.
2. Symposium is a technique in which two or more person under the direction of a
chairman presents several speeches , which give several aspect of one question
3. Symposium is a public meeting about a topic in which people have discussions.
4. An occasion at which people who have great knowledge of a particular subjects meet
in order to discuss a matter of interest.
OBJECTIVES OF SYMPOSIUM

1. To identify and understand two various aspects of theme and problem.


2. To develop the ability to decision and judgment regarding a problem.
3. To develop the values and feelings regarding a problem.
4. To enable the listeners to form policies regarding a theme or problem.
5. For sharing of information.
6. It is for inspiring interest.
7. For better personnel and social adjustment.

CHARACTERISTICS OF SYMPOSIUM TECHNIQUES


1. It provides the broad understanding of a topic or a problem.
2. The opportunity is provided to the listeners to take decision about the problem.
3. It is used for higher classes for specific themes or problems.
4. It develops the feeling of cooperation or adjustment.
5. The objectives as synthesis and evaluation are achieved by employing the symposium
technique.
6. It provides the different views on the topic of the symposium.

SCOPE OF SYMPOSIUM
The following are the main topics on which symposium technique is used:
1. Use of television for education.
2. Use of essay and objective type tests.
3. Semester system in education.
4. Use of microteaching in teacher education.
5. Use of team teaching in the schools.
6. Use of action research in classroom teaching.
7. Scope of education technology in our education.

TECHNIQUES OF SYMPOSIUM

Whole process divided into three phases.

1) Preparation phases
2) Conduction phase
3) Conclusion phase.

Preparation phases
 The apt topic for the symposium is selected and various aspects of the topic are
spelled out
 A group of participants , who are good in communications, are to be selected and
from among them a chairman is selected . the ideal number of pupil participants in a
symposium is four or five.
 It should be kept in mind that there is a clear connection of the symposium discussion
to the course objective necessarily or else students will be bored and perceive the
symposium as a waste of time.
 Each member including the chairman should known the objective of the symposium
and the breadth of topic to be discussed.
 All speeches to be prepared well ahead to avoid confusion and overlapping or
repetition of material.
 Date and venue are to be decided.

Conduction phase
 Chairman opens the topic for discussion with a brief introduction and also introduces
the speakers to the audience.
 He sets the time limit for presentation of papers by the speakers.
 Chairman may also invite questions from the audience and directs the discussion .he
maintain the sequence of information presented.
 Each speaker may be given an opportunity to make a final statement.
 The chairman finally sums up after all the speakers have spoken and closes the
session.

Conclusion phase
 The general audience listens to the discussions and each person forms his own
conclusions based on the validity or value of the view points presented.
 The chairman gives brief summary of all the speeches band opens the topic for
discussion to the students.
 Finally under the leadership of chairman , a consensus is reached after verifying the
pros and cons of different view points expressed by the speakers as well as the
participants.
1. Limited control of chairman over the proceedings.
2. Speakers may tend to deviate from said agenda causing difficulty in understandings.
3. Limited listeners participation.
4. Since audience has to form decision this technique is more suitable for a mature
audience.
5. There is probability of repetition of the conduct .
6. The different aspect of theme is presented simultaneously.

LIMITATIONS OF THE SYMPOSIUM TECHNIQUE:


The listeners remain passive in the symposium
ADVANTAGE:
1. It expands mental horizon.
2. It develops free and frankly attitude.
3. It stimulates broad understandings and develops attitude of tolerance and cooperation.
4. Teachers able to evaluate students creativity.
5. It is suited to a large group or classes.
6. This method can be frequently used to present broad topics for discussion symposium
at conventions and organization meetings.
7. Organization is good because of the set speeches prepared before-hand.
8. Gives deeper insight into the topic.
9. Directs the students to continuous independent study.
10.Lends itself to the teaching of clinical subjects.
11.This method can be used in political meetings.
12.It provides wide variety of opinion for the listeners

DISADVANTAGES
1. Inadequate opportunity for all the students to participate actively.
2. The speech is limited to 15 to 20 minutes.
3. Limited audience participation.
4. Question and answer limited to 3 or 4 minutes.
5. Possibility of overlapping of subjects.

RELEVANCE OF SYMPOSIUM IN NURSING

The symposium will provide a valuable opportunity for nurses to changing role of nurse
by implementing

1. of evidence based practice in through sharing and exchange of information on the


latest development.
2. This symposium will contribute formulating global and regional strategies in
advancing nurses role as well as developing policy initiative.
3. It enhance confidence of nursing students and increase in communication skills.
CONCLUSION

Symposium consist of a set of program of prepared speeches followed by audience


discussion. It provide broad understanding of a problem .the symposium forum serves an
excellent device for informing an audience .By having vase evidence it strengthens the case
that such going on took place at the symposium and were an important part of it. It lends
itself to the teaching of clinical subjects.This method can also be used in political meetings
and gives deeper insight of the topic.

SUMMARY

Symposium technique is one of the techniques of higher education. It is an instructional
