READING WITH COMPREHENSION

By Julie Pearl S. Quirante

Reading comprehension isn’t just about skimming our fingers right and instantly get
the mastery and understanding results. It’s not as easy as that since we are speaking here about
our second language which is the English language as one of our medium of instructions in
our class.

Diverse nations have varied languages being spoken by people belonging to different
cultures and races. Hence, the language policy argument is never a surprise. There are rules to
follow in every language we use to speak and they differ from the rests.

In our case, as we have more than 500 languages and dialects being used by
different ethics and group of people in the country, we find it so interesting that despite
some of these barriers we still able to manage well understanding English language in our
daily instructions.

As educators providing education to children inside the classrooms, applying various

teaching strategies to improve their learning and skills especially their ability to read with
comprehension is something that can’t be done overnight.

We have to let them read all the time because constant reading practice would lead
our learners to better comprehension. As what the saying goes, “practice makes perfect.”

Similar with some other activities we give to our learners , we know for a fact that
mastery is a thing to make them versatile with their work or specific task given .

Studies also show that we can comprehend as much as 10 million words or more in
our life time, so this is no problem as far as learning is concern, since as we associate with
something we can be able to understand , cope with and learn whatever there is new. This
means comprehension will surely be much develop in the part of our learners as we go on
functioning our role to educate our learners inside the four-corner-classroom.

Thus, to replicate or have persistent practice is deemed necessary. With this, we must
remember that using English language in some subject areas as implemented by the
Department of Education (DepEd), both directly and indirectly helps our students inside the
class develop comprehension.

It is therefore our responsibility as educators to provide learning improvement to our

learners. Aside from the usual instructions we do, we must extend our job to activities that would
cater the needs of our school children mostly the intellectually challenged ones.
OUR LEARNERS CATEGORICALLY BELONG
TO GENERATION Z
By Julie Pearl S. Quirante

According to Paul taylor on his journal “The Catalyst: The next generation”, millennials
are the most diverse, tolerant, connected, educated, and idealistic generation ever or the most
narcissistic, lazy, entitled, coddled, distrustful, and disconnected young adults.

What is it for us educators? It simple tells us that even experts and ordinary people are
under discussions over who can be really considered millennials Hence, others embrace this
term specially in outskirts of cities, based in their experience how it is being used or
understand in the countryside.

However, looking at the positive side of this issue about millennials , they are the
very people who can adopt and understand easily, as they have lot of sources of information.
They can easily express themselves because of the influence of what we so called “social
media.”

We know for a fact that using the social media is advantageous in the sense that
lots of learning here confines. We also get to meet new people and connect with relatives and
friends across the globe.

While the adverse side is, young adults and students alike really kill most of their
time in social media without goals and targets but to spend hours browsing , end up to
nothing but wasting the bright opportunities.

As a result, there is a big conflict on how they would manage their studies with the
advent of social media.

Take note that the common problem of students today is the excessive use of
gadgets and internet connectivity. In schools, it is evident that there is great effect in the
performance level of the learners.

It is true that we can get precise learning in the internet but when we are not guiding
our new generation on its proper use, they might invade our society as liabilities in the end.

Our society, according to Mr. Taylor, categorically divided into several types of
generations , this is how citizens today are so different from yesterday.

We have the so called generations X, Y and now Z.

However, this is only to give you my readers a hint , how life really face
changes. As life equates in untoward circumstances, thus, we can also be able to meet
new things and new experiences.

In other words, we can’t conclude or show biases and even sort of a comparison when it
comes to our students today and those of yesterday. Admittedly, we tend to compare them with
our generation. Some think that we were way better when it comes to knowledge accumulation
compared to our learners today which I vehemently disagree.

You know why? As I have said, we were born different from the environment of our
learners today.

We have different set up of learning environment. Like in the case of comparing them
that our learners are poor in speaking English language. This is a wrong perception
considering the fact that our environment in the past is different from today. Are we also good
in gadgets during our time? The answer is precisely no!

Maybe we should know how to mingle with people well because we have enough
time to do it in the past but learners today aren’t because they are focus in gadgets and in
the social media.

Going back to our role inside the classrooms, we need to understand well our
learners. We are mandated to educate them with the best that we could. That is the very
reason why we are using a lot of strategies to catch up with the latest trends of learning
for our current generation.

Since our learners today are gadget – centered, we can make use of these tools in order to
make them easily understand our lessons.

We can use computer set or a television inside the class and let them view it, than
to use our traditional techniques of talking in front of them in the whole period of time.

With this, we can improve our teaching approaches by letting our learners be
enthusiastic of their work all the time .

Under the generation Z which can be seen nowadays, the Department of Education
(DepEd) for sure will make some sort of adjustments once more in our quest to meet
the standard of quality education.

To give a bird eye what is generation Z is all about, this is now the stage where
our society verge to robots and robotics . That is why in advanced countries this is now the
trend, they are training learners , at their young stages , in a more complex world of how to
develop their learning using robotics.
