Briefly explain the problem solving and development relevance of your research to the needs of the country or
region

The main question defining the framework of our work is that of the significance of the seismic risk in the
presence of an old building, and the quality of the skikda building against a possible earthquake. This
question raises a number of other questions:
How to estimate the seismic vulnerability on the site of the skikda agglomeration correctly and at a lower
cost?
Which method to choose among the available methods will be appropriate to the local typology?
How to represent the seismic vulnerability and consequently the seismic risk on the city of Skikda?
What knowledge and perceptions does the population have of seismic risk ?
- Assumptions of the answers to the main question and the secondary questions
Throughout the work, we have done so far, we have established a set of working hypotheses, which are:
In Skikda , despite a moderate seismicity, where a strong degradation of old buildings built before the
application of seismic code and the desire to safeguard and preserve the real estate heritage on the old city
leads us to reflect on the means and the tool existing ones to put in place to evaluate the seismic
vulnerability of the building.
In this perspective, we also proposed to define practical and effective methodologies for a rational estimate
of the vulnerability of earthquake construction, could contribute with significant results with a set of
approaches and recommendations to sustainably preserve the heritage of the city of Skikda and the life of
the population. To date, macroseismic methods are the only truly operational and economically viable
methods for estimating damage to a very large number of buildings in the event of an earthquake, and
identifying critical urban areas presenting a globally significant risk.
