common framework for constructive dialogue within the farming community and with
non-farmers. Laura Rance also adds a global perspective to the issues around soil
health, food security, and sustainable farming.
The value of legumes in adding nitrogen through biological fixation and promoting
recycling of phosphorus in the soil is covered using recent research examples. The
benefits of having a forage in rotation to build soil organic matter and reclaim
problem soils such as salt-affected regions of a field are also examined in this
presentation.
Join three research scientists from Agriculture and Agri-food Canada as they provide a
summary of the latest research in Alberta in organics and related to organics.
Compost expert Bernice Kadatz will outline the four different types of compost, the
process of creating each of them and will identify the application for using these types
of compost in your operations.
Livestock producers unite! Bryce Lebrau will be addressing the raising, buying, selling
and marketing of organic beef.

The soil is the foundation for any system to work while the management practices are
the tools. A regenerative systems approach focused on soil biology will utilize
integrated, dynamic principles to synergize biologically-based practices to address
fertility, pest and disease issues. These regenerative systems have the potential to
leverage increasing soil organic matter to feed soil biology. This presentation will
discuss crop diversity including perennials and annuals as well as cover and companion
crops, reduced soil disturbance, and managed grazing to increase profitability by
maximizing nutrient and water use efficiencies.
