Detailed Lesson Plan in Physics II

The Electromagnetic Spectrum

I. OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, 100% of the students should be able to attain at least 85% of proficiency to:

1. Identify the various types of electromagnetic waves, their sources and uses.
2. Infer the harmful effects of electromagnetic waves.

II. SUBJECT MATTER

A. Topic: The Electromagnetic Spectrum
B. Concept: The electromagnetic spectrum is a continuum of all electromagnetic waves arranged
according to frequency and wavelength. The sun, earth, and other bodies radiate electromagnetic
energy of varying wavelengths. Electromagnetic energy passes through space at the speed of light.
The wavelength is the distance from wavecrest to wavecrest. The spectrum of waves is divided into
sections based on wavelength. The shortest waves are gamma rays, which have wavelengths of 10e-
6 microns or less. The longest waves are radio waves, which have wavelengths of many kilometers.
EM waves bring various beneficial effects to human, however, exposure to electromagnetic radiation
may lead to the changes in physiological indices, genetic effects, and immune function and affect the
health and immune function.
C. References: Sears and Zemansky’s University Physics with Modern Physics, 13th Edition by Hugh
D. Young and Roger A. Freedman
D. Materials: manila papers, permanent markers
E. Skills: identifying, inferring
F. Values: Knowing the harmful effects caused by too much exposure to electromagnetic radiation.

III. LEARNING ACTIVITIES

A. Routinary Activities
1. Prayer
2. Greeting the class
3. Checking of the attendance
4. Checking of the assignment

B. Developmental Activities
Procedures
A. ELICIT The students will play PICTURE REVEAL
(5 minutes)
1. Students will choose a number to reveal a part of the picture.
2. Students will be given a chance to reveal some parts of the puzzle
to guess the hidden picture.

*puzzles reveal pictures of radio, satellite, x-ray, microwave

B. ENGAGE 1. Let students share their idea about the pictures:
(3 minutes)

 Have you experienced using these?

 Do you know how these things work?

2. Introduce that these things are applications of electromagnetic

waves.

C. EXPLORE Designing the Class Activity

(25 minutes) “JIGSAW”
 Divide the class into groups with seven members.
 Each member of the group with be an “expert” on one specific
type of electromagnetic wave.
 “Experts” group with members from other teams assigned the
corresponding electromagnetic wave to study about it. (10
minutes)
 Upon returning to their teams, each one, in turn, teaches the group
about the topic assigned to them.
 From the given information, the group will work on determining
the SOURCES, USES/APPLICATION, and HARMFUL
EFFECTS of each electromagnetic wave. They will write their
findings on a piece of manila paper.
D. EXPLAIN Group Presentation of the Outputs:
(10 minutes) Each group will have one representative to present their work in front of
the class.
E. ELABORATE Class Interaction:
(10 minutes)  All answers presented by the students should be processed by the
teacher.
 Summarize the concept through brainstorming
 The teacher may give emphasis on the following concepts:

1. EM waves are a combination of electric and magnetic fields.

2. The electromagnetic spectrum is a continuum of electromagnetic waves
arranged according to frequency and wavelength.
 Frequency – number of cycles a wave completes in one second
 Wavelength – the distance measured from one crest of a wave to
the next crest
or from one trough to another trough
3. EM Waves having longer wavelengths have lower frequencies. Low
frequency indicates low energy. Therefore, EM waves having longer
wavelengths have low energies, while ones having short frequencies have
high energies.
4. One common property of EM waves is they travel at the same speed of
of 3 x 𝟏𝟎𝟖 m/s – the speed of light.
5. Some common sources of EM waves are the electronic circuits, warm
objects and astronomical objects like the sun.
6. Some common applications of EM waves are:
 Radio waves – radio, television
 Microwave – microwave oven, radar
 Infrared – thermography
 Visible light – photography, photosynthesis
 Ultraviolet rays – UV lamps
 X-ray – medical x-ray
 Gamma rays - Diagnosis and treatment of diseases such as cancer
7. Some harmful effects that can be caused by exposure to EM waves are
cataracts, birth defects, skin cancer and genetic damage.
F. EVALUATE I. Fill in the blanks
(5 minutes)
II. Answer the question
What are the harmful effects brought by exposure to electromagnetic
waves and what will you do in order to avoid them?
G. EXTEND Aside from the uses/applications discussed earlier, research on the latest
(2 minutes) applications/discoveries of the any of the EM waves.
