Rationale:

The Philippines remains one of the most impoverished and developmental

nations in all of Asia. The country has poorly fostered the growth and education of many
Filipino children, especially of the lower class, when in fact, they deserve more. Children
go to school with empty stomachs, which hinders them from absorbing what they are
taught inside the classroom. Moreover, being subject to poor nutrition adds to the great
possibility of stunting, proven by the fact that one in every five Filipino children suffers
from deterred growth caused by poor feeding practices (UNICEF). This calls for
immediate action not only from our government, but from abled people in our
community.

As college students enrolled in the Literacy Training Service, one of our

responsibilities is to be of aid to the community in all the ways we can. Educating
children of families who survive with meager income is one tool to combat ignorance,
and nonetheless, to fight against poverty. This project is devised to address problems
concerning health and nutrition in our community and likewise be an impetus for literacy
development.
A month-long feeding and literacy program in a chosen barangay could
significantly improve the condition and health of its children, and will teach them basic
literacy and numeracy skills needed for higher education later in their life. Indeed, this is
a great opportunity to give back to the community, and to coincidentally hone teaching
and social skills of LTS students. This can also be taken as an opportunity to teach
children the importance of environment stewardship and protection, and to promote
proper hygiene and physical fitness as these are considered crucial factors to promote
health and wellness.
