Definition
Hair wash is defined as the care given to the hair in order to prevent from infections, dirt
and feeling of well being.
Purposes
Indication
Unconscious patient
Post operative patient and multiple injuries
Bed rest patient
Any infection
Upper limb amputees
Preliminary assessment
1. Check the physicians order to see the specific precaution if any, for the movement
and positioning of patient.
2. Assess the general condition of the patient, condition of the scalp and hair and
need for shampoo.
3. Check the patient’s preference for soaps, shampoo, oil etc.
4. Assess the patient mental state.
5. Check the articles available in the unit.
A tray containing,
Bath towels 2 (One to protect the pillow and other to dry the hair)
Wash clothes or face towel (To protect the eyes from splattering of soap
and to dry the face at the end of the procedure.)
Mackintosh 2 (One to make a trough and other to protect the pillow and
bed)
Cotton balls in a container (To plug the ears)
Shampoo or liquid soap
Hair comb
Kidney tray and paper bag (To collect loose hair and cotton plug)
Basin 1 (To take water)
Bucket 1 (To collect dirty water)
Jug 2 (One for hot water and one for cold water)
Clean linen. (To change after shampooing or hair wash)
Preparation of patient
Explain the procedure to the patient in sequence and the way patient can assist.
Keep the patient flat if the condition permits. Remove the extra pillows and
backrest, unless contraindicated. Move the patients head and shoulder to the edge
of the bed.
Position the pillow under the shoulder so that head is slightly tilted back.
Make an improvised trough and place it under the head to facilitate the drainage
of water in to a receptor.
To make the trough, take a mackintosh, roll the newspaper in to a horse shoe
shape and place the mackintosh flat on it.
Roll the edge of the mackintosh over the roll of the newspaper, to form rim. This
device is positioned under the head of the patient with the open flat end towards
the side of the bed.
Place the bucket on the low stool close to the side of the bed. The distal end of the
mackintosh is received.
Plug the ear with cotton balls.
Place a wash cloth or a face towel over the eyes to protect the eyes.
Keep the articles near to the patient.
Preparation of self
Mix the hot and cold water and test the temperature of the water at the back of the hand.
Start cleaning at the hair line and working towards back of the head symmetrically.
Rinse thoroughly with water. Repeat washing and rinsing until the hair is clean. Squeeze
of water from the hair.
Dry the hair using the second towel. Place the towel in basin.
Dry the face with the wash cloth, placed over the eyes. Discard it in to the basin. Remove
the tangles and place it in the basin.
Discard the cotton plugs used in the ears in to the paper bags
Spread the hair over the mackintosh and towel placed on the pillow and allow
it to dry.
Position the patient in the centre of the bed for comfort and proper alignment.
Strength the bed linen
Change the linen if wet
Offer hot drink
Take all articles to the utility room, clean all articles, and disinfect the towels,
mackintosh, basin, and bucket. Use carbolic solution 1:20 for disinfect the
article.
Send the soiled linen to the laundry.
Put back all articles in proper place.
Personal articles are replaced in to the bed side table. Clean the top of the bed
side table.
Wash hands
Record the procedure in the nurses record with date and time
Record the abnormalities if any observed.
Return the bed side when the hair is dry, comb the hair and arrange the hair.
Remove the mackintosh and towel, spread on the pillow
Make the patient comfortable.
