Foreword

In this exercise the Modbus functionality in FAST/TOOLS will be explained by using some
example.

 1 FAST/TOOLS Modbus Exercise

This document contains an exercise related to Modbus communication.

For this exercise we need an FAST/TOOLS tls and some Modbus simulation tools.

1.1 Modbus communication, FAST/TOOLS is Master

In this exercise we will configure Modbus communication. In this case FAST/TOOLS will act as
Modbus Master (Client). A tool called ModSim will be used as Slave (server).

1. Create a Modbus line

2. Create a Modbus Station

3. Create a Modbus scan group

4. Create a Modbus point (actually create at least a point of each type).

5. Create for each point an item and connect the item to the point (Boolean for D type and Float
for R type).

6. Start up ModSim. It will run in demo mode for a few minutes (3.5), after that you have to
restart it again.

After starting you have to make a connection.

As we selected addresses 1 and 2, you will have to make sure this range is highlighted (green
box). If the demo time has elapsed, then the red area becomes visible.

7. Change some values on ModSim side and see if you get updates on FAST/TOOLS side.

 Note that only the selected type will show online in FAST/TOOLS, the others will show
offline.

8. Write some output to Modsim and check if you get updates.

9. Enable eqp logging. You can do it from the setup file or from eqpdbg, option 19.

10. Have a look at the structure of the logging. Try to find the request message for data and the
reply message.
