Question-01: The rotor of a turbine installed in a boat with its axis along the longitudinal axis of the 20
boat makes 1500 r.p.m. clockwise when viewed from the stern. The rotor has the mass of
750 kg and the radius of gyration of 300 mm. If at an instant, the boat pitches in the
longitudinal vertical plane so that the bow rises from the horizontal plane with an
angular velocity of 1 rad./s, determine the torque acting on the boat and the direction in
which it tends to turn the boat at the instant. (3.4)

Question-02 a An aeroplane makes a complete half circle of 50 metres radius, towards left, when 15
flying at 200km per hour. The rotary engine and the propeller of the plane has the mass
of 400 kg with a radius of gyration of 300mm. The engine runs at 2400 r.p.m. clockwise,
when viewed from rear. Find the gyroscopic couple on the aircraft and state its effect on
it. (3.3)

Question-02 b What will be the effect, if the airplane turns to its right instead to the left. ((3.3) 5
Question-03: Derive an expression for angular acceleration of the gyroscope, when the disk rotates 20
with certain speed on the spinning axis and the whole of the spinning system oscillates
about its precession axis. (3.2)

Question-04 a A uniform disc of diameter 300 mm and of mass 5 kg is mounted on one end of an arm 10
of length 600 mm. The other end of arm is free to rotate in a universal bearing. If the
disc rotates about the arm with the speed of 300 r.p.m. clockwise, looking from the front,
with what speed will it precess about the vertical axis. (3.2)

Question-04 b Describe the effect of gyroscopic couple on the aeroplane takes right turn, when viewed 10
from rear. (3.3)

Question-05: A uniform disc of 150 mm diameter has the mass of 5 kg. It is mounted centrally in 20
bearings which maintain its axle in a horizontal plane. The disc spins about its axle with
a constant speed of 1000 r.p.m. while the axle precesses uniformly about the vertical at
60 r.p.m. The directions of rotation are anticlockwise. If the distance between two end
bearings is 100 mm. find the resultant reactions at each bearing due to the mass and
gyroscopic effects. (3.2)

Question-06: The mass of turbine rotor of the ship is 20 tonnes and has radius of gyration of 0.6m. Its 20
speed is 2000 r.p.m. The ship pitches 6° below and 6° above the horizontal position. A
complete oscillation takes 30 seconds and motion is SHM. Determine the following: a)
Maximum gyroscopic couple, b) Maximum angular acceleration of ship during pitching
and, c) The direction in which the bow will tend to turn when rising, if the rotation of the
rotor is clockwise when looking from the left. (3.4)

Question-07: A four wheeled motor car of mass 2000 kg has a wheel base 2.5m, track width 1.5 m and 20
height of the centre of gravity 500 mm above the ground level and lies at 1 metre from
the front axle. Each wheel has an effective diameter of 0.8 m and the moment of inertia
0.8 kg-m2. The drive shaft, engine flywheel and transmission are rotating at 4 times the
speed of road wheel, in a clockwise direction when viewed from the front and is
equivalent to the mass of 75 kg having the radius of gyration of 100 mm. If the car is
taking right turn of 60 m radius at 60 km/hr, find the load on each wheel. (3.5)

Question-08: Derive an expression of the two wheel vehicles for the stability when it takes left turn. 20
(3.6)

Question-09: Derive an expression of the four wheel vehicles for the stability when it takes right turn. 20
(3.6)

Question-10: A four wheel trolley car of total mass of 2000 kg running on the rail of 1m gauge, rounds 20
a curve of 25 m radius at 40 km/hr. The track is banked at 10°. The wheel has an
external diameter of 0.6 m and each pair of an axle has the mass of 200 kg. The radius of
gyration for each pair is 250 mm. The height of C.G. of the car is 0.95 m above from
wheel base. Allowing the centrifugal force and gyroscopic couple action, determine the
