LEN European Championship Rules

(UPDATED 29 SEPTEMBER 2007)

In addition to the LEN General Event Rules the following REGULATIONS shall apply:

CUP-OW 1 EVENTS

Cup-OW 1.1 The European Open Water Swimming Cup is held in a series of five (5) or
more Cup Events over a distance of minimum five (5) km to maximum twenty-five (25)
km.

Cup-OW 1.2 The last Cup Event is the “Final”. All the other competitions are “Cup
Qualifying Events”.

CUP-OW 2 ORGANISATION

Cup-OW 2.1 The Organising Federations and the places where the Cup Events will be
held shall be decided by the LEN Bureau.

Cup-OW 2.2 Each Organising Federation shall circulate information with all necessary
details (including hotel prices) to all LEN Federations no later than ten (10) weeks prior
to the event.

Cup-OW 2.3 For each Cup competition the LEN Technical Open Water Committee
(LEN TOWSC) will nominate one (1) LEN Technical Delegate and one (1) Referee from
FINA or LEN List. For the “Final”, the LEN Bureau will nominate one (1) LEN Bureau
Delegate. The Delegates will be responsible for and supervise the organisation and the
correct conduct of the competitions according to LEN Rules and Regulations. They will
take action on all matters arising on site at the competitions which require an immediate
decision.

CUP-OW 3 FORMAT

Cup-OW 3.1 Ranking and Point System

Cup-OW 3.1.1 There will be separate rankings for men and women.

Cup-OW 3.1.2 In each of the Cup Qualifying Events points will be awarded as follows:

- 1st: 20 points

- 2nd: 17 points

- 3rd: 15 points

- 4th: 14 points,

and so on until 16th place which receives 2 points. All other swimmers finishing the race
within the time limit shall receive one (1) point.

Cup-OW 3.2.1 Competitors may participate in all Cup Qualifying Events and collect
points. However, only the best results, achieved in 50% of the Cup Qualifying Events
and the result of the “Final“ shall be considered for the General Classification.

Cup-OW 3.2.2 To be considered within the General Classification, a competitor must


complete the “Final” and at least 50% of the Cup Qualifying Events within the time limit.

Cup-OW 3.2.3 In case of a tie in the General Classification, the result of the “Final“ will
be decisive.

Cup-OW 3.3 Final

Cup-OW 3.3.1 The Final will be staged over two (2) days.

Cup-OW 3.3.2 First day: 10km individual.

Cup-OW 3.3.3 Second day: 5km as Time Trial. Swimmers shall start individually, each
swimmer sixty (60) seconds after the preceding swimmer.

Cup-OW 3.3.4 The starting positions will be determined by the placing in the event on
the first day (in reverse order).

Cup-OW 3.3.5 The ranking of the swimmers in the Final shall be determined by adding
the times of both events.

Cup-OW 3.4 Disqualification

Cup-OW 3.4.1 If in the opinion of the Referee or an Assistant Referee, any swimmer
takes advantage by interfering with another swimmer, by making intentional contact with
another swimmer, by pacing or by slip streaming, the following proceeding will apply:

1st Infringement:

A yellow flag and a card bearing the swimmer’s number will be raised to indicate and to
inform the swimmer that he is in violation of the Rules.

2nd Infringement:

A red flag and a card bearing the swimmer’s number will be raised to indicate and to
inform the swimmer that he is for the second time in violation of the Rules. The
swimmer will be disqualified. He must leave the water immediately and be placed in an
escort craft, and take no further part in the competition.

Cup-OW 3.4.2 If in the opinion of the Referee, an action of a swimmer or an escort craft
is deemed to be “Unsporting”, the Referee shall disqualify the swimmer concerned
immediately according to FINA Rules.

Cup-OW 3.4.3 Swimmers finishing a race with intent in an equal time will be
disqualified.

Cup-OW 4.1 Entries to the “Final” shall be accepted only for competitors having
participated in a minimum of 50% of the Cup Qualifying Events.

Cup-OW 4.2 If the Cup Qualifying Events are:

- five (5) the competitor must have participated in three (3);

- six (6) the competitor must have participated in three (3);

- seven(7) the competitor must have participated in four (4); etc.

CUP-OW 5 ENTRIES TO CUP QUALIFYING EVENTS

Cup-OW 5.1 Preliminary Entries (including the expected number of participants, but
no names) shall be submitted to the respective Organising Federation, with copy to the
LEN Office, no later than 6 weeks prior to the event. LEN Rule E 15.3 will apply for
withdrawals after this date.

Cup-OW 5.2 Named Entries shall be submitted to the respective Organising Federation
at the given date. A Federation may withdraw a named entry up to 10 days prior to
competition. Otherwise, a fee of sixty-five (65) EURO shall be paid to LEN for each
entered non-starting competitor.

CUP-OW 6 ENTRIES TO THE “FINAL”

Cup-OW 6.1 A list of the competitors eligible to participate in the “Final” (see Rule
Cup-OW 4.1) will be circulated by the LEN Office as soon as possible after the last Cup
Qualifying Event.

Cup-OW 6.2 Named Entries shall be submitted to the respective Organising Federation
no later than the given date, with copy to the LEN Office.

Cup-OW 6.3 Federations may withdraw a named entry up to 10 days prior to


competition.

Cup-OW 6.4 A fee of sixty-five (65) EURO shall be paid to LEN for each entered non-
starting competitor.
