ASSIGNMENT

COMPARING THE TYPES OF GOVERNMENT AND EXPLAINING THE ADVANTAGES

AND DISADVANTAGE, WHICH TYPE IS THE BEST?
AUTOCRACY
An autocracy is a system of government in which a single person or party possesses supreme
and absolute power. The decisions of this autocrat are subject to neither external legal
restraints nor regularized mechanisms of popular control (except perhaps for the implicit
threat of a coup d'état or mass insurrection). Absolute monarchies (such as Saudi Arabia,
the United Arab Emirates, Eswatini, Brunei, and Oman) and dictatorships (such
as Turkmenistan, Eritrea, Equatorial Guinea, Belarus, and North Korea) are the main
modern-day forms of autocracy.

Advantages of Autocracy Government

1. Faster Decision-making
Proponents of this government form claim that having one ruler or person to decide on
matters concerning a nation and without distractions and influences of others make it easier
for the leader to make sound decisions he or she thinks works for the interest of the country.

2. No Opposition
With only an absolute monarch or a ruler to create and enact laws, there will be no other
political parties that can oppose what bills or executive orders will be passed. This makes it
easier for the government to come up with plans and carrying them out. This can result to
progress and prosperity of a country.

3. Strong Leadership
An autocratic leadership requires a leader who is strong, powerful and firm when it comes to
making decisions and controlling a nation. An autocratic leader usually has military control
and is the one who can impose on a group of people to follow his or her rules and
instructions.

Disadvantages of Autocracy Government

1. Absolute power: a disadvantage is that power is only exercised by one person. If the
leader is greedy and not a good person, he will use power to accumulate wealth and abuse
2. There are no elections: the ruler will remain in power as long as he lives because there
will be no elections, unlike a democratic government where citizens can choose their
leaders.
3. It instills fear: people usually fear for their lives. This is because, in this form of
government, people are expected to obey the rules or face heavy fines and penalties for not
following the ruler.

OLIGARCHY
Oligarchy is a form of government in which all power is held by members of an elite segment
of society. Such elite individuals are members of royalty, the very wealthy, the highly
intellectual, and others. Oligarchical rulers come to power as a result of their elite status,
being born into a royal family, being born into affluence and fortune, or otherwise claiming
high favor. Rulers in oligarchy exercise their authority in their own best interests, not for the
interests of the people they govern. Unlike an autocratic ruler, an oligarchical ruler need not
be the official ruler of the nation, but may rule from behind the scenes. This can reflect (but
is not limited to) economic interests, a particular religious tradition (theocracy), or familial
rule (monarchy). Pakistan has oligarchy government others include Russia, Iran, South Africa,
Ethiopia,Pakistan and the Greek city states.

Advantages of Oligarchy Government:

· People have control over their own lives
· People deal with issues and vote on them to the degree of which it affects them.
· It provides people with self-empowerment.

Disadvantages of Oligarchy Government:

· It can take a bit of work and some process.
· It might be hard to come to a consensus
· It takes a lot of work, time, and effort.
· Decisions are made in a small group so everyone might not get what they want.

DEMOCRACY
Democracy is defined as a form of government in which power belongs to the people. There
are two forms of democracy. One is direct democracy, in which all eligible citizens have
direct participation in the decision making of the government. Example is the United States.
The second and more common form of democracy is representative democracy, in which
citizens exercise their power through elected representatives. The elected representatives
propose, develop, and create laws for the citizens to abide by. The most familiar example of
democracy is the representative democracy that exists in Turkey.

Advantages of Democracy Government

1. It protects the interest of citizens.
As previously stated, the citizens in a democratic country are given the right to vote on
political, social and economical issues, particularly the representatives they want to be in
charge of making major decisions, such as the president. This can greatly protect the people
from anything they would disagree to occur.

2. It prevents monopoly of authority.

Due to the fact that the government is bound by an election term where parties compete to
regain authority, democracy prevents monopoly of the ruling authority. And, the elected
ruling party would make sure their policies will work for the people, as they will not be able
to remain in power after their term with bad records—they will not be re-elected.

3. It promotes equality.
Generally, democracy is based on the rule of equality, which means that all people are equal
as far as the law is concerned. Every person has the right to experience and enjoy equal
political, social and economic rights, and the state is not allowed to discriminate him on the
standard of sex, class, religion and property.

4. It makes for a responsible and stable administration.

When there are elected and fixed representatives, a more responsible government is
formed. Thus, democracy can be efficient, firm and stable. Its administration is ruled and
conducted with a sense of dedication, and people under this system discuss matters and
problems thoroughly to come up with sensible decisions.

5. It brings a feeling of obligation towards the citizens.

The ruling authorities owe their success to elections by the citizens, so they would feel
grateful to and socially responsible for them. This can serve as their motivating factor to
work for the citizens, for they have the right of choosing their government.

6. It imparts political education to the people.

One argument in favor of democracy is that it can serve as a training school for citizens—
they are driven to take part in state affairs. During elections, political parties propose their
programs and policies in support of their candidates through public meetings,
demonstrations, television, radio, posters and speeches by their leaders to win public favor.
All of these can impart political consciousness among the people.

Disadvantages of Democracy Government

1. It might allow misuse of public funds and time.
Democratic governments can lead to wasted time and resources, considering that it takes a
huge amount of time on formulating laws and requires a lot of money to be spent during
elections. It is also highly possible that the country will be ruled by incompetent and
irresponsible leaders who will just spend public funds for their own tours and recreation.

2. It instigates corruption.
Those who are elected to power might resort to unethical means for personal interests and
engage in corrupt practices. During their tenure in office, they might take advantage of
authority for personal gains, putting the interests of the masses at the backseat.

3. It allows not exercising the right to vote.

Sadly, in some democratic countries, people fail to exercise their right to vote. Perhaps, they
are reluctant to do it or are just less aware about the impact of their votes. Or, perhaps they
do not see it as a privilege and take the process less seriously.

4. It may put more emphasis on quantity, rather than quality.

Another disadvantage of democracy is in terms of providing services—it tends to put more
emphasis on quantity, rather than quality. Also, considering that the system might be
governed by irresponsible and incompetent leaders, equality might be in question for only
the rich and famous might be prioritized more than the poor.
5. It can take long to make decisions.
Because it takes long to make decisions, it will also take long to implement them. Unlike in a
monarchy where one person is making decisions that are implemented quickly, democracy
requires majority voting in implementation, thus it is relatively less prompt in taking actions.

CONCLUSION
It is important to take note that political systems have their own downsides, and people
have different views about them. But by weighing their advantages and disadvantages of
Autocracy,Oligarchy and Democracy, which in this case for me the best is democracy, where
people can come up with their own ideas and understanding on who and how best the state
should be governed and also the people get to enjoy certain rights and prevailages like Rule
of law, absolute opposition, free elections unlike the Autocracy and Oligarchy, where all the
powers are held by members of an elite in the society or a single person or party who
possesses supreme and absolute power .
