GEOLOGIC HAZARDS

Passed to: Mr. Yves Manaban

Passed by: Johnny Reyes

The quarry site located in Pilapil (Siaton River)

Several serious environmental impacts related to quarrying activities on and near

the river, such as vibrations, land degradation, land subsidence and landslides, water
pollution, occupational noise pollution, and air pollution, will lead to health-related
problems and loss of biodiversity.

Quarrying operations can adversely alter pre-existing ecosystems, and change

hydrogeological and hydrological regimes. This adverse influence of stone and sand
quarrying induces damage in property, depletion of ground water, loss of fertile
topsoil, degradation of forests, deterioration in aquatic biodiversity and public health.
On the other hand, haphazard quarrying of sand may cause a rapid change in bed
configuration in response to the changes in flow. Quarrying basically destroys
landscape. This can lead to downstream movement, scouring, or accumulation of
sediment while provoking shoreline erosion. When riverbeds are composed of sand,
this on-going pattern of erosion and deposition causes meanders to progress slowly
downstream in time.

The Aggregates industry should:

 Operate 100% in compliance with the regulatory framework and the

environmental Condition set, which cover all the aspects of environmental
impacts of extraction activities.
The Government’s should:

 Apply more constraints or monitoring to the industrial operator’s to make them

comply with the regulatory framework that regulates the aggregates extraction
activities.
 Update and integrates the legislative framework that regulates the aggregates
extraction activities.

The Local Population/Local Authorities/NGO's should:

 Monitor and report illegal quarry areas.

 Get involved in remediation of abandoned quarry operations.
 Be actively involved in monitoring of existing quarry operations
 Suggest remediation models and post quarry activities of legal operations.
The Debris Flow over Valencia

Fast-moving flows of mud and rock, called debris flows or mudslides, are among the
most numerous and dangerous types of landslides in the world. They are particularly
dangerous to life and property because of their high speeds and the sheer destructive
force of their flow. These flows are capable of destroying homes, washing out roads
and bridges, sweeping away vehicles. This Debris can cause the damage of the
houses near by or infrastructure. May even cause of death of people near the prone
areas.

What Government’s should:

 Build a new project that take the risk out of the area and put precaution that
might people go for the awareness on accidents.
 Preserve the area so that no accidents will happen and no casualties.
What Resident’s should:
 Evacuate the area
 Look for another safer place that no geologic hazard will occur.
Landslide near Valencia

Landslides are caused by disturbances in the natural stability of a slope.

They can accompany heavy rains or follow droughts, earthquakes, or
volcanic eruptions. Mudslides develop when water rapidly accumulates
in the ground and results in a surge of water-saturated rock, earth, and
debris. Mudslides usually start on steep slopes and can be activated by
natural disasters. Areas where wildfires or human modification of the
land have destroyed vegetation on slopes are particularly vulnerable to
landslides during and after heavy rains.
Just like Debris flow, this also destruction to human life. It will cause the deformation
of mountains and hills.

What Government’s should:

 Government should create a project like planting trees to help avoid landslides
in the area.

What Resident’s should:

 Participate the planting project and stop cutting tress because trees have
important role on nature.
 Report Illegal lagers to authorities.
 Make a project sustaining environment safety.
