1.0 PURPOSE
To familiarize the student with the function and operation of tools and machines used in
industrial maintenance, this subject provides the understanding of basic workshop
technology.

2.0 OBJECTIVES

4.0 CONTENTS
This course is basically shop-practice oriented. Only a limited number of lectures are to be
devoted to theoretical aspects. The students are to complete work pieces using hands-on
machine-tools, as per the instructions of the lecturer. Wherever necessary, reports are to be
submitted. It is strongly urged that projects be set by the class teacher for completion by the
students.

UNIT ONE
1.0. MARKING OUT PROCESSING
Objective: After completing this unit, you should be able to:

1.1.Usage of center punch, divider, prick punch to use basic marking out tools to
perform simple task (scriber, vee-block, marking out table).
1.2. To describe the function of datum lines and use basic marking out equipment to
perform simple task.
1.3.Layout a working to an accuracy of 0.007’’ or 0.18mm using combination set,
surface gauge, hole center, arcs and circle.
1.4.Make a precision layout using the vernier height gauge.

UNIT TWO
20. MEASURING PROCESSING
Objectives: After completing this unit, we should be able to:

2.1.Identify several types of steel rules (metric/inches) and measuring round and flat
work piece to an accuracy of 1/64 inches or 0.5mm with a ruler
2.2. Using outside caliper to transferring measurement to inside diameter.
2.3. Identify the most common types of outside micrometer and their uses and measure
0.001” or 0.01mm.
2.4. Identify the most common types of vernier calipers in term of 0.1, 0.02, 0.05 of 0.01
accuracy and 0.001”.
2.5. Measuring sleeves, hole, depth of slots and grooves using micrometer, vernier etc.
2.6. Explain the use and application of gauge block and calculate inch/metric gauge
block building up.
2.7. Make angular measurements to an accuracy of 5 minutes of a degree using a
universal bevel.
2.8. Make angles measurements less than 5”of a degree using a sine bar, gauge block and
a dial indicator.
2.9. Interpret the surface finish symbol that appears on a drawing and measure the
surface finish of a performance.

UNIT THREE
3.0 HAND TOOL PROCESSING
Objective: After completing this unit, you should be able to:

3.1. Select various tools used for holding, assembling or dismantling work pieces. (bench
vice, hammer, screw drivers, wrench pliers).
3.2. Select and use the proper hacksaw blade for sawing a variety of materials.
3.3. Select and use a variety of files to perform various filing operations.
3.4. Calculate the tap drill size for inch and metric taps.
3.5. Cut internal thread using variety of taps and external thread using a variety of dies.
3.6. Identify and explain the purpose of several types of hand reamers, broaches and
tapping .
3.7. Ream a hole accurately with hand reamer
3.8. Cut a keyway in a work piece using broach and arbor press.
3.9. To select and use the correct chisel for a particular task
3.10. To select basic powered hand tools to perform a selection of tasks (Hand drills,
impact wrench, grinder and metal shears).

UNIT FOUR
4.0 JOINING METHODS
Objective: After completing this unit, we will be able to:

4.1. To identify types of screws, bolts, nuts and washers.


To identify the types of screw thread commonly available ISO international
organization for standardization.
4.2. To distinguish between the techniques endplates in the various locking devices.
4.3. To describe the principles involved in soldering.
4.4. To describe the principles involved in brazing.
4.5. To identify the main types of adhesive.
4.6. Explain the safety principle on joining method

UNIT FIVE
5.0. MACHINE SHOP PRACTICE
Grinding Machine: (Tool & Cutter/Surface Grinder)
Objective: After completing this unit, we should be able to:

5.1. To identify the component parts and drive systems of typical surface machine.
5.2. Select the proper grinder wheel for each type of material.
5.3. True and dress in grinder wheel.
5.4. Set up various work pieces for grinder.
5.5. Identify and state the purpose of the main parts of a cutter and tool grinder.
5.6. Observe the safety rules to operate the grinder.
5.7. Grind clearance angles on twist drills, turning, shaping, and milling cutter.
5.8. Observe the safety rules to perform tasks.

6.0. Drilling Machine


Objective: after completing this unit, we should be able to:

6.1. Identify four types of drill press, their purpose and six standard operations.
6.2. Name and state the purpose of the main parts of an upright and radial drill.
6.3. Identify and use work- holding device for drill.
6.4. Set up and clamp work properly for drilling.
6.5. Identify four systems of drill size and know where each is used.
6.6.Grind the proper angle and clearance on the twist drill.

7.0. Centre Lathe Machine


Objective: After this unit, students should be able to:

7.1. Identify and state the purpose of the main operative parts of the lathe
7.2. Identify the work holding equipment on the lathe.
7.3. Select the proper speed/feed for the cutting required.
7.4. Use the center lathe to produce simply cylindrical shapes, and use drills boring tools
and reamers.
7.5. Use the center lathe to produce tap turning (Short by compound slide and offsetting the
tail stock)
7.6. Use the center lathe to produce “V”threads
7.7. Observe safety precautions in lathe operations.

8.0. Shaping Machine


Objective: After this unit, students should be able to:

8.1. Identify the component parts and drive system of shaping machine
8.2. Describe the safety procedures and function of the machine.
8.3. Identify the control and methods of the stopping and starting of the shaping machine
8.4. Calculate the shaper cutting speed
8.5. Adjustment of stroke and feeds
8.6. Selection of cutting speeds
8.7. Setting up work on the shaper

9.0. Milling Machine


Objective: After this unit, students should be able to:

9.1. Describe the functions and use of horizontal and vertical milling machine
9.2. Identify the component parts and drive systems of typical horizontal and vertical
milling machine
9.3. Identify types of milling cutter and their use
9.4. Describe the methods of mounting milling cutters
9.5. Describe the method of work holding
9.6. Use milling machine to produce simple shapes to given specification
9.7. Describe the function and uses of the indirect and universal indexing
9.8. Calculate the indexing using 40:1
9.9. Use the procedure for milling a hexagon and end mill in a vertical milling machine.
9.10. Use the procedure for milling square by straddle milling operation.
9.11. Use the procedure for milling a hexagon by straddle milling.
9.12. Use indexing procedure for spur gear cutting operation.

6.0. UNIT SIX


Cutting Tools and Cutting Fluids
Objective: After this unit, students will be able to:

6.1. Select the appropriate cutting tool material


6.2. Explain the purpose of each type of rake and clearance angle
6.3. Identify the application of various types of cutting tool material
6.4. Describe the cutting action at different types of machines
6.5. Procedures use to sharpen tools for turning, drilling etc.
6.6. Describe the function of cutting fluid
6.7. To appropriate precautions to be observed when using cutting fluid

7.0. UNIT SEVEN


Sand Casting Process
Objective: After this unit, students will be able to

7.1. Explain the principle of sand casting


7.2. Describe the casting qualities (defects) and how to minimize them.
7.3. Explain the type of pattern (solid, split, match-plate, cope-and-drag) used in
sand casting
7.4. Describe the internal surface (core) of casting
7.5.Describe the type of mold and their preparations
7.6.Explain the casting operation processes.

9.0. GENERAL CONDITIONS


After the study of the course, the expected learning outcome that the student is able to:

1. Understand the safety and working procedures in a workshop.


2. Acquire skills for using different types of hand tools
3. Use different measuring and marking devices
4. Use independently the basic machine tools such as lathe and drilling machines.
5. Set up the machines for different operations such as reaming, turning, tapering,
thread cutting, etc.
6. Understand the principle Tool Sharpening
7. Understand the different method joining
8. Supervise technical activities in a workshop
