4.0 CONTENTS
This course is basically shop-practice oriented. Only a limited number of lectures are to be
devoted to theoretical aspects. The students are to complete work pieces using hands-on
machine-tools, as per the instructions of the lecturer. Wherever necessary, reports are to be
submitted. It is strongly urged that projects be set by the class teacher for completion by the
students.
UNIT ONE

Objective: After completing this unit, you should be able to:
1.1.Usage of center punch, divider, prick punch to use basic marking out tools to
perform simple task (scriber, vee-block, marking out table).
1.2. To describe the function of datum lines and use basic marking out equipment to
perform simple task.
1.3.Layout a working to an accuracy of 0.007’’ or 0.18mm using combination set,
surface gauge, hole center, arcs and circle.

Objectives: After completing this unit, we should be able to:
2.1.Identify several types of steel rules (metric/inches) and measuring round and flat
work piece to an accuracy of 1/64 inches or 0.5mm with a ruler
2.2. Using outside caliper to transferring measurement to inside diameter.
2.3. Identify the most common types of outside micrometer and their uses and measure
0.001” or 0.01mm.
2.4. Identify the most common types of vernier calipers in term of 0.1, 0.02, 0.05 of 0.01
accuracy and 0.001”.
2.5. Measuring sleeves, hole, depth of slots and grooves using micrometer, vernier etc.
2.6. Explain the use and application of gauge block and calculate inch/metric gauge
block building up.
2.7. Make angular measurements to an accuracy of 5 minutes of a degree using a
universal bevel.
2.8. Make angles measurements less than 5”of a degree using a sine bar, gauge block and
a dial indicator.
2.9. Interpret the surface finish symbol that appears on a drawing and measure the
surface finish of a performance.
UNIT THREE
3.0 HAND TOOL PROCESSING
Objective: After completing this unit, you should be able to:
3.1. Select various tools used for holding, assembling or dismantling work pieces. (bench
vice, hammer, screw drivers, wrench pliers).
3.2. Select and use the proper hacksaw blade for sawing a variety of materials.
3.3. Select and use a variety of files to perform various filing operations.
3.4. Calculate the tap drill size for inch and metric taps.
3.5. Cut internal thread using variety of taps and external thread using a variety of dies.
3.6. Identify and explain the purpose of several types of hand reamers, broaches and
tapping .
3.7. Ream a hole accurately with hand reamer
3.8. Cut a keyway in a work piece using broach and arbor press.
3.9. To select and use the correct chisel for a particular task
3.10. To select basic powered hand tools to perform a selection of tasks (Hand drills,
