This External Removable Hard Disk Drive (HDD)

conversion kit for the RICOH MP 4. (1x) M3 flat washer
C6003/C5503/C4503 installs over the rear panel
of the copier and allows easy removal of the drive 5. (3x) M3x6mm Pan-Washer Head Screw
without tools to increase data security.

3. Warnings :

3.1 This kit is for use only with TÜV Listed

Ricoh Copier / Printer / Scanner, Model
MP C6003/MP C5503/MP C4503 series. The
installation of this kit must be performed by a
qualified Ricoh technician.

3.2 Hard disk drives (HDDs) are vulnerable to

damage due to electrostatic discharge (ESD).
Although this kit is designed to provide adequate
protection, it is recommended to discharge static
electricity present in your body by touching a
grounded surface before manipulating the unit.
Proper ESD control practices shall always be
observed.

3.3 Hard disk drives (HDDs) are vulnerable to

shock and vibration-induced damage. Always
handle HDDs with care and avoid any impact.

3.5 Removable HDD Tray operation: Refer to

section 5. Once the kit is installed, it becomes
possible to remove the HDD tray from the copier.
Before removal or insertion of the tray, the
standard shutdown procedure must be followed
properly: First, perform a “soft shutdown” with
the main power pushbutton on the top control
panel and wait for the light to be off. Then flip the
power toggle behind the clear door located on the
lower front panel.

3.6 The use of multiple different HDDs is not

recommended if the encryption option is installed.
Refer to the encryption kit instructions for the
complete HDD replacement procedure involving
encryption key reprogramming.

3.7 Some parts may differ slightly from the

pictures.

4. Kit Installation :

4.1 Perform a “soft shutdown” using the “Main

Power” pushbutton on the top control panel. Wait
for flip the main toggle switch located on the
lower front panel (behind a small clear door

4.2 Remove the power cord from the wall outlet.

4.3 Unscrew the two screws used to secure the

back panel cover.

4.5 Remove the two side screws securing the

back panel.

4.4 Remove the plastic over of the side panel by

removing the screws.

4.6 Remove the panel by pushing to the right,

and unlocking it from the clips inside the panel.

4.8 On the panel board, disconnect the hard disk

tube covering the cables is inserted into the panel.

4.9 Remove the HDD and bracket by

unscrewing the three blue screws shown below

4.11 Use a stool to support the housing assembly

while you continue the installation.

4.12 Connect the power and data cable to the

mating plug on the panel board.

4.10 To install the external removable kit, take the

housing assembly , and pass the cable first through
the lower slot of plastic cover of the side panel,
and then the corresponding TEL line slot you

4.13 Install the metal back cover by screwing

back the two screws you removed in step 4.5

4.15 Screw-in the stand-off in the hole

shown below:

4.14 Secure the plastic cover using only three of

the screws removed in step 4.4 as shown below

Bracket Installation
4.16 Install the bracket on the back panel using
two of the M3 x6mm screws in the kit as shown in
the pictures below:

4.18 Take the assembly resting on the stool, and

place it inside the bracket with the key lock facing
up:

4.17 The other leg of the bracket should be sitting

on the stand-off that was installed in step 4.15.
Using the third M3x6mm screw, secure the
bracket into the stand-off.

4.19 Use the four M3x 4mm L screws to

secure the housing onto the bracket.

4.21 Use the key to unlock the tray and remove

the HDD tray from the housing assembly using the
“eject” pushbutton. Press once to extend the eject
button, press again gently to eject the tray.

4.22 Remove the sliding cover from the tray.

Remove the two flat head screws near the
connector.

4.20 If you are using the HDD from the bracket

remove four screws and four grommets, and
remove both cables from the HDD.

4.24 Using four (of the 14) small supplied M3

screws inside the removable tray.

4.23 Install the HDD inside the slide-out tray:

Connect the HDD into the connector labeled
“LOWER DRIVE”. The top of HDD has to face
you.

4.25 Slide the cover back on and secure with the

two flat-headed screws.

4.26 Gently slide the HDD tray back into the

removable HDD housing and retract the eject
button if required.

5.4 It may be required to push the tray gently

Operation : near the end to connect the tray. The top surface of
the tray should fit flush with the lock.
5.1 Ensure that the copier has been properly
turned off: First, perform a “soft shutdown” with
the main power pushbutton on the top control
panel and wait for the light to be off. Then flip the
power toggle behind the clear door located on the
lower front panel.

5.2 Ensure that the locking mechanism is in the

unlocked position on the removable HDD housing.

5.3 Gently slide-in the removable HDD tray into

the housing. DO NOT DROP IT IN!

5.5 Turn the key 90° clockwise to lock the try in

place and enable the connection.

5.6 Turn the copier ON and verify that the HDD

is present: From the normal copier screen, select
“System Status” at the bottom, then “Data
Storage” .The LEDs on removable HDD housing
will show activity:

Green light: Drive present

Orange light: Data access

5.7 To remove the HDD tray, first perform a 5.10 Press the eject button again gently to eject

6. Installation of the labels :

6.1 The kit includes key chains, warning and

identification labels, and a carrying case.

6.2 Install a “Match-Mark Identification Label”

(shown below) on the carrying case, and second
one on the removable HDD tray.

6.3 Install a small “Match-Mark Serial Number

Label” (small numbered label, approximately ¼” x
¾”) on each one of these locations:

 Both keychain tags.

 Removable HDD tray, on the match-mark ID
label, next to “Serial No”.
 Carrying case, on the match-mark ID label.

6.4 Install the yellow “Caution” label on the

copier, near the removable HDD housing.

6.5 Install the yellow label “Turn off main power

here” near the Main Power pushbutton on the top
control panel.
