Traditional Music

● Brazil is the largest country in South America and the


fifth largest country in the world. Its name comes from the
tree named brazilwood.

● The official language is Portuguese because people from the


European country Portugal claimed the land in 1500.
The country gained independence in 1822.

● The capital is Brasilia and other major cities include


Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.

● The Amazon River and a majority of the Amazon Rainforest is


located in Brazil.

● Brazilian Carnival is celebrated every spring often with


music and parades led by performers in
Samba Schools in vibrant costumes.

● Popular music and dance genres in Brazil are


samba, forro, and bossa nova.

● Samba originated in Rio de Janeiro and has influences


from Africa with its fun drum rhythms.

● Bossa nova became popular in the 1960s and means “new


trend”. It is a fusion of Brazilian samba and jazz.

● Traditional Brazilian instruments are agogo, berimbau,


and tamborim.
