Supposons que nous voulions traduire en anglais la phrase suivante :

Le livre du garçon.

C’est une phrase dans laquelle il y a deux noms :

un nom désignant un possesseur : le garçon

un nom désignant une chose possédée : le livre

En anglais, ON NE DOIT PAS DIRE : The book of the boy

Il faut employer la construction suivante appelée "cas possessif" :

The boy's book

FORMATION :

(POSSESSEUR) + 'S + CHOSE POSSEDEE

Ex : John'S book
Pas d'article devant un nom propre !

(POSSESSEURS/ MOT SE TERMINANT DEJA PAR "S")+ '+ chose possédée :

Ex : His parents' car

(POSSESSEURS)+ 'S + CHOSE POSSEDEE

Ex : The women'S careers.
