Introduction

English is thought to be the 2nd most important language in Pakistan. Major reason behind this
essentialism is its international exposure that gives it an important feature for learning this
language. This language is part and parcel of our curriculum from primary to higher education; it
also secures its place as an official language in Pakistan. It is the language of science and
technology, modern research, language of computer and internet, language of library and English
is the only common language of the world and way of diplomatic communication. Keeping in
mind the importance of the second language the internship was designed to provide hands on
experience for the B.S (Hons.) graduates. Purpose of this internship was to get firsthand
experience of the teaching of English as a second language in Pakistan.

One of the basic reasons for designing this internship was to produce better English teaching
experience for the prospective learners in our university. It was to give an experience to the
prospective learners about the forthcoming impediments in the professional field where they
have to face crowded class and less provision of AV aids. Due to range of 60 to 80 students in
classroom s/he has to face problems of controlling the class so s/he uses traditional ways of
teaching. Mostly, there is lack of good teachers. They use wrong and unorganized methods of
teaching while teaching they ignore stress on spoken and pronunciation that is the thing which
makes English bane for Pakistani students. During the internship, I learnt how to overcome these
problems and how to configure these troubles. During my experience in the internship I learnt
the following strategies before starting teaching English as a teacher:

 I must design a well-defined policy, what I was to teach to the students.

 I must be very clear about the objectives of teaching.

 While teaching I must keep aims before me i.e. ability of speaking, reading which I
taught through AV aids.

 I should adopt encouraging attitude. I should introduce direct method and should have
good accent and intonation in group teaching and dialoguing in the class.

To meet up the goals I have tried to improve language skills among learners, introduced a well-
defined policy of teaching English as a second language, experts of language were visited so that
1
I may teach them with full grip and professional capability, adopted direct method of teaching,
functional use of encouraging attitude and language was taught through A.V Aids.

The focus of internship was firstly, to take English as the part and parcel of our curriculum and
provide functional use of language to those who wish to go for advance study in science and
technology. It is necessary to produce sound knowledge of English from the very beginning.
Secondly, it is the soul language of courts and administrations; it is the language of modern
research, language of computer and Internet, library language. Thirdly, it is the only language of
communication in the world. Lastly, English is taught to be the 2nd most important language in
Pakistan right after national language. An English knowing person can have more chances to
meet up goals of life quite easily. Almost all nations of the world are trying to emphasize English
language in their national set up. Pakistan has link from the past with this language because our
past rulers were English. So, if we want to make progress by knowing English we have more
chances of employment at home and abroad we can proceed abroad with full confidence and get
a job easily.

During this internship program, I have learnt all from the reverend teachers who have ample
experience of teaching in different fields of teaching. They shared their experiences and helped
us a lot in my professional development.

Overview

2
Every teacher who intends to teach something has to prepare a practical outline of a topic to be
taught and this intention of teaching needs lots of practice and planning. In order to give practical
training of the second language acquisition our department arranged an internship training started
from the 3-04-2017 to 29-04-2017 at the Government Comprehensive girls high school
Bahawalpur. The internship was supervised by Ms. Maryam Akram Lecturer GSCWU
Bahawalpur. The training was designed to teach English as second language to the school
learners. During the training, each day I had to develop a planner and visit an elementary class
equipped with A.V aids and innovative teaching methods.

The origin of such planner has been derived from Gestalt psychology. A unit plays an important
part in learning which causes the learners to participate and attain skill in language learning. I
used to take the help from units in understanding the whole concept. So, this theory originated
the concept of unit plan. This plan is based on two streams of thoughts:

a. Herbart propounds the first approach. He stresses on the content and information in a unit
plan.

b. John Dewy and Kilpatrik gives the second approach. They have emphasized on the
experiences of learners in a unit plan rather than information.

The Internship Portrayal

3
The Internship has following portrayal as per planner that had significant role in planning and
organizing the class with the following reasons.

a. In teacher education programmer the lesson planners provide the guideline to pupil teacher
during internship teaching practice.

b. It provides awareness of teaching objectives in direction to achieve the objectives of

education.

c. The use of teaching aids, techniques, strategies and tactics is pre-determined in the
presentation of the content.

d. It maintains the sequence of content, presentation and prevents the teacher to deviate from
the topics.

e. The effectiveness of a teacher depends upon a good planner as it develops the reasoning
and decision-making ability.

The Herbertian theory states that the learner is like a clean slate and all the knowledge is given
from outside. The teaching content should be presented into units and these units should be
arranged in a logical sequence. He has given five steps:

Introduction
Presentation
Organization
Comparison
Evaluation

Following sequence was followed in the portrayal of internship. The entire piece is divided in
five stages that are:

The Institute
Preparation Presentation Practice Stage Production Follow-Up
Stage Stage Stage Stage
The Institute

Government Comprehensive Girls High School is one of the most respectable institutes of
Bahawalpur and it is secure place for girls in every sense. As an educational institute, it provides
an opportunity to girls for better schooling in a peaceful environment. Girls went in grooming
process without being mocked by boys as it is mostly seen in other high schools. This school
provides secure and good environment for girls to groom into an independent personality. For all
