GRADE 1 to 12 School INSET – Science Group (2016) Grade Level 11

DAILY LESSON LOG Teacher Mr. HOMER E. EREÑO Learning Area EARTH AND LIFE SCIE
Teaching Dates and Time October 24, 2016, 2:30 – 4:00 pm Quarter First

I. OBJECTIVES
A. Content Standard The learners demonstrate an understanding of the three main categories of rocks.
B. Performance Standard
C. Learning Competency/Objectives S11/12ES-Ib-10 (Classify rocks into igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic)
Write the LC code for each. The learners should be able to:
1. identify the common properties of igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks, and
2. classify given rock samples into igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks
II. Content
Minerals and Rocks – Classification of Rocks
Concept(s) • Rocks, just like other kinds of matter, have mass, volume, and density.
• Rocks vary in characteristics like texture, color, and presence and absence of carbonate.
• Rocks may be classified into three main groups according to how they were formed and physical observable features: igneous, s
metamorphic rocks.
Process Skills • Identifying
• Observing
• Classifying
Value Integration • Awareness on the importance of types of rocks on infrastructure construction.
III. LEARNING

IV. PROCEDURES Time Material
allotment
A. Reviewing previous lesson or Start the session by presenting a concept map of Earth Materials Concept
presenting the new lesson From the concept map describe the following: Rubric te
B. Establishing a purpose for the a) the characteristic features of Earth materials
lesson b) the features common to one type of rocks, and
c) the features tell the origin of rocks.
Give emphasis on the formation of the three types of rocks.

Point out the importance of the concepts (rocks and classyfying these into three major groups).
Establish the objectives for the day through read aloud method.
Introduce the different tasks (procedure) that the students will do to attain the obejctives.
Introduce the expected output from them as they do the series of tasks required.
Agree on how their output will be rated.
(SETTING THE STAGE FOR LEARNING)
C. Presenting examples/Instances of Recall concepts of rocks by presenting diagram of rock cycle. Point out the dynamic transitions among three Video -
the new lesson main types of rocks. http://stu
Emphasize that the formation of these three main types of rocks, several properties are considered. /types-o
Have them watch a video on the properties of the three types of rocks. rock-gro
Point out some terms/ concepts they will enocounter in the study of rock classification.
• Igneous Rock Texture: Pheneritic Aphanitic Poryphyritic Pyroclastic
• Igneous Rock Color: Mafic Felsic
• Sedimentary Rock Composition: Clastic Organic Chemical
• Metamorphic Rock Layer Appearance: Foliated Non-foliated
Emphasize that these are the major bases for classifying rocks.
(EXPLAINING WHAT TO DO)
D. Discussing new concepts and Point out: Hand len
practicing new skills # 1 “ I will try to classify rock samples. I will demonstrate first on how are you going to classify rock samples.” 10% HC
Activity 1: What is in the Bag? Bag
• Point out that in the bag are unknown sample of rocks. Glass D
• I will try to identify these rocks guided by the charts (chart of rock classification). Petri Dis
• Show and do these procedure to identify the properties of rock samples (specimen): 3 unkno
- Use hand lens to examine the specimen. Rock cla
- Draw the specimen
- Determine gran size and rounding particles
- Identify the color
- Identify the texture of the specimen
- Test for carbonate through acid test
• Point out: As I do these you will be guided of rock classification chart posted on the board to classify the
specimen into igneous, sedimentary and metamophic.
Have a first LEVEL CHECK OF UNDERSTANDING to know if they clearly understand the procedure.
(MODELING)
E. Discussing new concepts and Point out: Hand len
practicing new skills # 2 “Now let us try to classify rock samples.” 10% HC
Each group will be provided with a box coantaining rock samples (specimen). Box
Activity 2: What is in the Box? Glass D

• Ask them to identify the rocks guided by the charts (chart of rock classification). Petri Dis
• Do these procedure to identify the properties and group of rock samples (specimen): 6 – 8 un
- Use hand lens to examine the specimen. Rock cla
- Draw the specimen
- Determine gran size and rounding particles
- Identify the color
- Identify the texture of the specimen
- Test for carbonate through acid test
• Point out that they will be guided of rock classification chart posted on the board to classify the
specimen into igneous, sedimentary and metamophic rocks
Have a CHECK OF UNDERSTANDING at each point to know if they clearly understand the concept.
(GUIDED PRACTICE)
F. Developing mastery Ask them to collect samples of rocks outside the classroom. Hand len
(leads to Formative Assessment Activity 3: Rocks in the Environment. 10% HC
3) • Do these procedure to identify the properties and group of rock samples (specimen) collected: Plastic tr
- Use hand lens to examine the specimen. Glass D
- Draw the specimen Petri Dis
- Determine gran size and rounding particles 8 unkow
- Identify the color Rock cla
- Identify the texture of the specimen
- Test for carbonate through acid test
• Ask them how were they able to classify their rock samples into igneous, sedimentary and
metamorphic rocks.
• Let them point out what properties they identify for them to be able to classify rocks.
Have a LEVEL CHECK OF UNDERSTANDING of each group by presenting their collection of rocks.
(INDEPENDENT PRACTICE)
G. Finding practical application of Show images of different infrastructure construction Images
concepts and skills in daily living a. Statues c. House flooring •
b. Bridges and buildings •
Ask them how types of rocks are used in the images(situation) shown. •
Let them cite other examples of uses of igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks in construction.
H. Making generalizations and Have them respond to the following: Manila P
abstractions about the lesson a) Are the features common to one type of rocks? Why? Marker P
b) Do features tell the type of rocks? How? – Ask them tell how to classify the rocks into igneous, Colored
sedimentary and metamorphic rocks.
Have them revisit their observation, and ask them what are the common properties used to classify rock
saamples.
(CLOSURE)

I. Evaluating learning Checkup of understanding:
• Provide unknown rock samples and their description/properties ( 5 specimens)
• Ask them to classify the 5 specimens
J. Additional activities for application Ask each students to research on 3 known igneous. Scientific paper include the following:
or remediation a) history of formation,
b) common environment ,
c) common texture, and
d) common use of the rock
(This is related to the next topic – origin and environment of common minerals and rocks)
