ES 13 Mechanics of Deformable Bodies 1

Problem Set 4
1st Semester, A.Y. 2018-2019
Due: Nov. 29, 2018

Instructions/Reminders:
1. Solve the following problems on yellow paper. Write your name, student number, and section on the upper right
hand corner of every page. Do not write at the back of your answer sheets. Use only black or blue pens for your
solutions. Do not use friction pen and correction fluid.
2. Submit during class hours on Nov. 29, 2018 (Thursday). Late submissions are not allowed.

PROBLEM 1 [40 PTS]

ω0
P0 ω0 7.5 kN-m
A B E
I
200 GPa
3.125(10-7) mm4

0.4 m 0.3 m 0.4 m

The cantilever beam AB is subjected to the loads P0, and ω0. The maximum deflection at B is limited to
2 mm. Using the values in the table above, solve for the maximum allowable load P0 using the Double
Integration Method.

PROBLEM 2 [40 PTS]

ω0

A C B
M0
1.6 m 1.4 m

The steel beam ACB (E = 200 GPa, I = 5.6(106) mm4) is supported by a pin and two rollers as shown. If
the beam is loaded with a distributed load 𝝎𝟎 = 𝟐. 𝟓 𝒌𝑵/𝒎 and a concentrated moment 𝑴𝟎 = 𝟏 𝒌𝑵𝒎,
solve for the following:

a. The reactions at A, B, and C and

b. The maximum deflection and its location from A.

Solve by Moment Area Method with reference section at A.

PROBLEM 3 [20 PTS]

A 2014-T6 aluminum alloy column (𝝈𝒀 = 𝟐𝟓𝟎 𝑴𝑷𝒂) has a length of 6 m. If the cross-sectional area has
the dimensions shown, determine the effective length and critical load if the beam is

a. Fixed at one end and pinned at the other

b. Fixed at both ends
c. Pinned at both ends
d. Fixed at one end and free at the other
