MODERN ARTIST
Romeo Villalva Tabuena was a Filipino painter and
printmaker. Working with a wide range of subject matter and
materials, his work primarily features figures pieced together
from muted, monochromatic shapes. His aesthetic is often
one inspired by Cubism, with a fractal-like geometric
patterning imposed on recognizable forms. Tabuena is best
known for his depictions of Philippine rural landscapes such
as farms, carabao, nipa huts in oil and watercolor media.
Tabuena is also admired for his darkly-toned oil paintings
which seem to reflect the “proletarian” concerns. His figures
are often short and squat, with hints of Expressionist
distortion and no bright colors to relieve the charged
atmosphere. He died in San Miguel de Allende on October
15, 2015. Still Life with Basket

Victor Oteyza was a Filipino Asian Modern & Contemporary
artist who was born in 1913. Victor Oteyza's first artwork to
be offered at auction was Untitled at Salcedo Auctions in
2017. This current exhibit features the work of Victor Oteyza,
one of the 13 moderns who began the modern art movement in
the Philippines. Victor’s work originated from an extensive
study of philosophy and was a physical manifestation of his
goal to portray the creativity of the modern (1950’s) Filipino
in a manner that broke the mold of the posed portraits and
copies of art masters. Victor was a writer, director, perpetual
student of the universe and his experiences translated the
lessons he learned into modern art. The artist died in 1979. Untitled
