MODERN ARTIST
Romeo Villalva Tabuena was a Filipino painter and
printmaker. Working with a wide range of subject matter and
materials, his work primarily features figures pieced together
from muted, monochromatic shapes. His aesthetic is often
one inspired by Cubism, with a fractal-like geometric
patterning imposed on recognizable forms. Tabuena is best
known for his depictions of Philippine rural landscapes such
as farms, carabao, nipa huts in oil and watercolor media.
Tabuena is also admired for his darkly-toned oil paintings
which seem to reflect the “proletarian” concerns. His figures
are often short and squat, with hints of Expressionist
distortion and no bright colors to relieve the charged
atmosphere. He died in San Miguel de Allende on October
15, 2015. Still Life with Basket

NEOCLASSIC ARTISTS
Fernando Amorsolo Cueto was one of the most important artists in the history of painting in
the Philippines. Amorsolo was a portraitist and painter of rural Philippine landscapes. He is
popularly known for his craftsmanship and mastery in the use of light. The first National Artist
of the Philippines for painting, grew up during a time of transition for the country. Amorsolo was
noted for his portraits. He made oils of all the Philippine
presidents, including the revolutionary leader Gen.
Emilio Aguinaldo, and other noted Philippine figures.
He also painted many wartime scenes, including
Bataan, Corner of Hell, and One Casualty. Amorsolo,
who died in 1972, is said to have painted more than
10,000 pieces. He continued to paint even in his late
70s, despite arthritis in his hands. Even his late works
feature the classic Amorsolo tropical sunlight. He said
he hated "sad and gloomy" paintings, and he executed
only one painting in which rain appears.
