Allowance and Success: A Correlational Study

It is imperative to conduct the study to know how allowance affect students'

performance in school. Academic performance is defined or regarded as participants

‘examination grades at the end of first semester. It is also seen as the level of

performance in a particular field of study. Higher scores indicate better academic

performance (Egbule, 2004).

According to Nelson Mandela, education is the most powerful weapon which one

can use to change the world. Filipino parents value education as one of the most

important legacies they can impart to their children. They believe that having a better

education opens opportunities that would ensure a good future and eventually lift them

out of poverty (ADB Economics Working Paper Series No. 199. Education Outcomes in

the Philippines. May 2010). Education helps maintain society by socializing young

people into values of achievement, competition and equality of opportunity. (C N

Trueman "Functionalism and Education".22 May 2015). Education can stimulate

economic growth less directly, by increasing innovation, productivity and human capital.

Education also has a history of fostering positive social change by encouraging things

like political participation, social equality and environmental sustainability.

The Philippines is undergoing a major overhaul to bring it in line with education

systems worldwide, starting with the K-12 sector. The K-12 Basic Education Program

aims to provide every Filipino child with the education s/he needs to compete in a global

context. As defined by Cruz [2010], K to 12 Program refers to the most recently

implemented basic education curriculum signed into a law by the incumbent President

Benigno Aquino III through Republic Act 10533. According to Aquino, the K-12 program
will pave the way for an ever-brighter future for young Filipinos by equipping them with

basic education up to international standards. The goal of the new curriculum is to give

Filipino students enough time to master skills and concepts so that they are ready for

tertiary education when the time comes (Philippines creates opportunities in overhaul of

K-12 education system. 9 Aug 2013). Based on Republic Act No. 10533, which was

passed on Jan. 30, 2013, by Congress—and signed into law by President Aquino on

May 15, 2013—K-to-12 requires one year of kindergarten preparatory to enrollment in

Grade 1, six years of elementary education and another six years of secondary

education.

Although K to 12 Curriculum was implemented to help students master skills

required for international level, the process could be costly. One of the top reasons for

dropping out of school is the high cost of education. The 2009 Family Income and

Expenditure Survey (FIES) revealed that education is not a priority among poor

households as bulk of their spending goes to food (60%). Critics argued that while K to

12 will be provided free by the government in public schools where most of the poor

enroll in, parents will still have out-of-pocket expenses to cover their schoolchildren’s

food, transportation and allowance. Adding two more years of high school would

therefore entail additional burden on the households and this could inadvertently

increase dropouts and worsen completion rates (Policy Brief Senate Economic Planning

Office. June 2011). Another thing that eats deep into the pockets of students is the issue

of stationeries. Students need writing materials and textbooks. Some students need to

write reports and projects. These take a huge amount of money. Someone who is not

financially strong cannot carry out all these. In fact, these problems are what prompted
the researchers to make an investigation into the financial or educational allowances of

the students in relation to their academic performance. Literature points that has a small

amount of allowances or financial status affects the academic performance of the

students (Bodvarsson and Walker).

Allowance affect students’ performance in school in a way that they diminish their

allowance for their transportation, meal and stationeries like textbooks, writing materials,

reports and projects that students need for them to go to school. Thus, it is imperative to

conduct the study to know how allowance affect students’ performance in school.

Statement of the Problem

The study aims to know the Correlation between Grade 11 ABM Griffin students'

Daily Allowance to their Academic Performance in Business Math.

Specifically, it seeks to answer the following questions:

1. What is the profile of students in terms of:

1.1 Age

1.2 Gender

1.3 General Point Average (GPA)

2. Amount of daily allowance
2.1 Transportation
2.2 School Necessities
2.3 Snacks
2.4 Personal Savings
3. Is there a significant relationship between students’ allowance and academic

performance?
4. How can allowance affect students’ performance in class?
Scope and Delimitation of the Study

The study is descriptive in nature and focused on Grade 11 Accounting, Business,

and Management students of Argao National High School. The research sample is

composed of two sections Petri and Manucci of which respondents are around ages 15-

18. The primary data gathering method is through a survey and an interview to

determine the student's perspectives of having low, enough, and/or extra allowance on

their daily school performance. It will focus on the amount of daily allowance and

general average of the first semester in Business Math as variables in interpreting the

relationship between the allowance and academic performance of a student.

Null Hypothesis

There is no significant relationship between students’ allowance and academic

performance.

Alternative Hypothesis

There is a significant relationship between students’ allowance and academic

performance.

Significance of the Study

The study must be conducted to find out the correlation between Grade 11 ABM

students' allowance to their academic performance in Argao National High School. The

result of this study is beneficial to the students, parents, school administrators, and

researchers.
This study will help the students value their allowance and encourage them to do

well on their studies. This study gives the parents reasons as to why they should

provide enough allowance to their children in hopes to clear misunderstandings of how

students budget their allowances every day. School Administrators will be provided with

ways on how to be considerate to students with poor academic performance in hopes to

make a peaceful community inside the school. Lastly, this study will serve as a basis for

future researchers specifically those who are aiming to investigate on student's poor

academic performance.
