Education 111 Values Education
Values -A person's principles or standards of
behavior; one's judgment of what is important in life.
- Basic and fundamental beliefs that guide or
motivate attitudes or actions.
Ethics -Moral principles that govern a person's
behavior or the conducting of an activity.
- Ethics is based on well-founded standards of right
and wrong that prescribe what humans ought to do,
usually in terms of rights, obligations, benefits to
society, fairness, or specific virtues.
Morality -Principles concerning the distinction
between right and wrong or good and bad behavior.
- A particular system of values and principles of
conduct, especially one held by a specified person or
society.
Moral Conscience-Present at the heart of the person,
enjoins him at the appropriate moment to do good
and to avoid evil. It also judges particular choices,
approving those that are good and denouncing those
that are evil.
Moral Conscience Formation-Begin by being open
to the truth and what is right.
-Study Sacred Scripture and the teaching of the
Church.
-Examine the facts and background information
about various choices and
-Be discerning in where we gather information.
-Prayerfully reflect to discern the will of God.
Characteristics of Values-Values provide standards
of competence and morality.
-Values are fewer in number than attitudes.
-Values transcend specific objects, situations or
persons.
-Values are relatively permanent and resistant to
change.
-Values are most central to the core of a person.
-Values have two attributes-content and intensity.
The content attribute stresses that a particular code of
conduct is important. The intensity attribute specifies
how important that particulars code of conduct is.
-When we rank an individual’s values in terms of
their intensity. We obtain the value system of that
person.
Functions of Values -Provides goals or ends for the
members to aim for.
-Provide for stabilities and uniformities in group
interaction; hence create sense of belongingness
among people who shared commonly.
-Bring legitimacy to the rules that govern specific
-Help to bring about some kind ‘of adjustment
between different sets of rules.
-Differentiate between right and wrong and what is
desirable and undesirable.
The Human Person
Human Being -A man, woman, or child of the
species Homo sapiens, distinguished from other
animals by superior mental development, power of
articulate speech, and upright stance.
-A person, especially as distinguished from other
animals or as representing the human species.
Six types of human values
1. Individualistic Values -Valuing the self over
anything else in the world.
-The individualistic value support freedom as it
believes that every person has the right to decide
what is good for him.
-Every child starts with individualistic values and he
wants everything in the world for the self and wants
everyone to serve him.
2. Family Values -The support of family is must for
the growth of every human child.
-Family is considered to be the basic unit of the
society instead of the individual.
-The interest of each member of the family is
protected through an unwritten law as love and trust
alone govern the management of a family.
3. Professional Values -Every person has to join an
origination to earn his livelihood and to contribute to
the society. These organizations are designed to serve
a specialized function of the society and thus need a
set of value to keep all members of the organization
motivated and united.
-Thus man develops a set of values due to his
profession.
4. National Values -The values of a nation represent
its tradition, history and experiences of its people
since its creation.
5. Moral Values -Moral values are passed on from
one generation to another by tradition.
6. Spiritual Values -These values are eternal as
they never change. Therefore, often people call
such values as spiritual or divine as it never dies.
The worth of human person -Every human being is
uniquely made in the image of God. Every human
being has priceless value and unlimited potential
regardless of the circumstances of their conception
-The justice system considers a human life
"priceless", thus illegalizing any form of slavery; i.e.,
humans cannot be bought at any price.
-In social and political sciences, it is the marginal
cost of death prevention in a certain class of
circumstances.
