GDB

VLSI is the process of creating an integrated circuit (IC) by combing thousands of transistors into a
single chip. There are two kinds of widely used IC technologies. One is FPGA and other is ASIC. Budget,
power consumption, and speed are the common parameters considered for the selection of these
technologies. Suppose a medium volume production of an image transformation circuit is required. As
a Circuit Design team lead, which one of the two IC technologies you will select considering the above
given parameters for the design of production of required transformation circuit? Support your
answer with valid reasons in either case.

What is FPGA?

The FPGA is Field Programmable Gate Array. It is a type of device that is widely used in electronic circuits.
FPGAs are semiconductor devices which contain programmable logic blocks and interconnection circuits.
It can be programmed or reprogrammed to the required functionality after manufacturing.

ASIC (application-specific integrated circuit)

An ASIC (application-specific integrated circuit) is a microchip designed for a special application, such as
a particular kind of transmission protocol or a hand-held computer. You might contrast it with general
integrated circuits, such as the microprocessor and the random-access memory chips in your PC. ASICs
are used in a wide-range of applications, including auto emission control, environmental monitoring,
and personal digital assistants (PDAs).

An ASIC can be pre-manufactured for a special application or it can be custom manufactured (typically
using components from a "building block" library of components) for a particular customer application.

Introduction to FPGAs
Programmable Logic Devices are based on a programmable AND-OR gate array which
are programmed to implement any function in the SOP form. The output of the AND-OR gate
array can be directly used as a combinational circuit output. Provision is there to connect the
output of the AND-OR gate array to a D-flip-flop for Sequential circuit operation. An FPGA is a
more flexible device than PLDs as instead of a single AND-OR gate array, an FPGA device
contains multiple logic blocks that can be individually programmed to perform different
functions. Each Logic Block is connected to other blocks through row and column
interconnects that can be programmed to connect any Logic block to another. The Logic
blocks are connected to the outside world through programmable I/O blocks. The block
diagram of a Field Programmable Gate Array FPGA is shown.
