Title:
Half Wave Rectification
Apparatus:
 Semiconductor Diode
 Resistor(1k)
 Oscilloscope
 Function generator
 Connecting probes
Procedure:
 The half wave rectification we basically connect a
semiconductor diode in series with a resistor of 1k.
 Then we select a sinusoidal function from the panel of the
signal generator and apply 10V to resistor and rectifier
combination in such a way we connect positive probe to diode
anode(+) terminal and negative(-)probe to the resistor terminal
common with ground.
 The output is displayed on the oscilloscope.
 The output signal does not have any negative peak and is a DC
signal.

1) Circuit Diagram:

The above Circuit diagram shows represents the half wave rectification diagram in which we use a
single diode. A 10V sinusoidal signal is applied as input using a signal generator.

2) Setting input signal:

In the above figure, we set the 10V input signal using the signal generator by setting the frequency
and magnitude of the wave that is being displayed on the oscilloscope.

3) The breadboard diagram:

For input:
In the above figure using probe wires, we give the 10V input from the function generator to the
circuit in which the red wire is connected to the p-type of the diode and the black wire is connected
to the resistor.

For output:
To display the output we connect one end of another probe wire to the oscilloscope and the red wire
to the n-type of the diode and the black wire to the resistor.
4) Output signal:

The above figure shows the half wave rectified output which is obtained when a 10V
sinusoidal signal is applied.

5) Proteus Simulation:

a) Circuit layout:

The proteus simulation is done to confirm the answers we obtain practically.

b) Input signal:
Similarly, as we did practically we take an input signal of 10V sinusoid and apply
as input to the circuit.

c) Original input and half-wave rectified output:

The diode gives the half wave rectified output in which all negative peaks have been
eliminated and we obtain a DC signal.
6) Result:
From this experiment of half wave rectification that when a sinusoidal
input signal is applied from function generator our half wave rectifier circuit
convert the positive half cycle of input sinusoidal signal to output signal and
negative cycle is eliminated from the input sinusoidal signal.
7) Key point:
Halfwave rectifier output:
From this observation we conclude that
output of half wave rectifier circuit is not smooth and continuous. To make
output smooth and continuous we use filter circuits. The output we obtain is
not necessarily the exact half of the input signal. In fact the output signal is
maybe a little less than half of the applied voltage.
