How we’ve updated ADMIRALTY Information Overlay V2

Available to all AVCS users at no extra cost, the ADMIRALTY Information Overlay (AIO) is designed to help you at the crucial passage planning stage.

Displayed as a layer on top of ENCs, the data set contains additional navigationally significant information including Temporary & Preliminary Notices to Mariners (T&P NMs) and ENC
Preliminary Notices to Mariners (EP NMs).

For greater clarity during passage planning, we've made some changes to AIO to improve the way in which information is displayed.

So how has AIO changed?

Previously, AIO contained all paper T&P NMs issued. However, this could sometimes result in duplication where the producer country had already included this information in the ENC
themselves as an update or new edition.

In AIO V2, T&P NMs are now only shown if temporary information is not already included in the ENC. You can find out which countries included T&P NMs in their ENCs by viewing our
T&P NMs status list.

In addition, AIO will no longer include temporary information that is only relevant to paper chart users where information is already included within the ENC. This means that digital users
will only see the information relevant to them for simplicity during passage planning.

Will this be displayed differently on ECDIS?

Over the years, changes have been made to ENC and ECDIS standards, including updates to the IHO's S-52 Presentation Library. In Version 4.0, countries can now code their ENCs to
display a 'd' symbol to indicate date dependent temporary information.

These symbols will be displayed on the ENC during route checking if the producer country encodes the information with a start or end date.

Other T&P NMs providing additional information that is not already included in the ENC will be displayed using coloured polygons within AIO.

ENC showing date dependent information

How will I be able to show T&P NMs to compliance inspectors?

Audit and compliance inspections require you to show that you are working with the latest ENC updates for your passage plan. The inspector will therefore check that you have the latest
updates installed on ECDIS and that your procedures extract all relevant information from them, including temporary information.

Where the producer country has included temporary information in the ENC, this will be assessed using usual route check procedures. Therefore any temporary information which is not
included in the ENC will be provided and displayed through AIO, as long as there is an ADMIRALTY T&P.

To help explain this to compliance inspectors, we have summarised this in a letter that can be downloaded below.

Where can I find more information?
