AS/400 Disk Replacement Procedure

1- Login to the LPAR.

2- From the main menu, type in strsst and enter.


3- Type in user ID and password.

4- From SST menu select option 1. Start a service tool.


5- Then select option 7. Hardware service manager.

6- Next, select option 6. Work with service action logs.


7- Choose a date range to show the logs and press enter. Wait for a few seconds.

8- Check the details by typing 2 in front of each item and find the disk related log. The resource
name for disk related issues are in DD### format.
IMPORTANT: Take note of the resource ID for replacement process.
9- The Part Number can be found from this menu. You can display more details by typing 2 and
enter.

10- Now type 6 and enter to turn the indicator on. The disk slot LED will start blinking slowly, which
allow you to physically identify it.
11- From the same menu, type 8 and enter to select CUNCURRENT MAINTENACE.

12- Type in the device resource name which you have took note from the Service Action Log menu
(DON’T PRESS ENTER YET). Select action 1 to remove the disk. Choose a delay time or leave as 0
if you are close to the enclosure. By pressing enter the disk LED will start blinking rapidly. You
must only remove the disk within 9 seconds.
13- After a few seconds, a message will appear showing the process was successful.

14- Press enter to go back to the Hardware Service Manager menu. Then choose option 6. Work
with service action log.
15- Choose a timeframe.

16- Select the same log with the same resource ID.
17- Enter 8=Concurrent Maintenance.

18- Type in the Resource Name, choose option 2=Install device, choose a time delay if necessary
then press enter. Now the disk slot LED will blink rapidly and you have 9 seconds to insert the
new disk.
19- After a few seconds a message will appear showing the process was successful.

20- Press enter to get to the Hardware Service Manager menu.


21- Then press F12 to get to the main SST menu. From here, choose option 3. Work with disk units.

22- Now choose option 3. Work with disk unit recovery.


23- Then choose option 6. Rebuild disk unit data. Next menu will appear in a few seconds.

24- This menu will list the newly installed disk/disks. Type 1 and enter for the process to begin. Wait
for a few seconds.
25- After a few seconds, a new menu will appear showing the process has been started. From here
you can press F5 to refresh the manu and see the progress.
