1. What is the generic definition of the term “homologation “?

- Automotive homologation is the process of certifying vehicles or a particular component in a vehicle that it has
satisfied the requirements set by various statutory regulatory bodies. It is mandatory to get this approval to export
automobile products or components.
Homologation standards are applicable to all kinds of automobiles especially in the areas of environment and safety.
Prior to sales of motor vehicles, automotive systems and their components should necessarily have approvals
according to the official standards of their destination countries.

2. What are homologation norms for the following regions,

Latin America
CIS (former Soviet Union countries)
Brazil
Japan
South Korea
South Africa

- Homologation norms for the respective countries are as follows;

Latin America - MERCOSUR - Southern Common Market
CIS (former Soviet Union countries) - TRCU - Technical Regulations Customs Union
Brazil- INMETRO - National Institute of Metrology Standardization and Industrial Quality
Japan - TRIAS - Test Requirements and Instructions for Automobile Standards
South Korea - KMVSS - Korea Motor Vehicle Safety Standards
South Africa - NRCS - National Regulator for Compulsory Specification

3. What is meant by the term “type approval”?

- Type approval also known as certificate of conformity is granted to a product that meets a minimum set of regulatory,
technical and safety requirements. Generally, type approval is required before a product is allowed to be sold in a
particular country, so the requirements for a given product will vary around the world.
Vehicle Type Approval is the confirmation that production samples of a design will meet specified performance
standards.
