Sigmund Freud’s Theory of Psychoanalysis

1. ID- Which focuses on human behaviour driven either by fear, hunger, or a desire of
sex. The sole function of ID is to provide for immediate discharge of quantities of
excitation (energy or tension) that are released in the organism by internal or external
stimulation.
2. Ego- Which is the rational side inside a person; which creates a balance between ID
and Superego. The ego is governed by reality principle. The aim of reality principle is
to postpone the discharge of energy until the actual object that will satisfy the need has
been discovered or produced.
3. Superego- Which is heavily moral driven; what is right and wrong, no other
distinction between two actions exists. The superego is person’s moral code. It develops
out of the ego as a consequence of the child’s assimilation of his parent’s standard
regarding what is good and virtuous and what is bad and sinful.

Movie: Confessions Of A Shopaholic

Character: Rebecca Bloomwood

1. As per ID- When Rebecca goes to purchase the Green scarf, she goes to the billing
counter and pays the amount through different cards and when she falls short of $20,
she goes to a hotdog store breaking the queue and is ready to buy all the hotdogs at $20
cashback, she agrees to it saying that she has interview in 4 minutes and she needs the
scarf for her aunt in hospital, but in reality she does not have any aunt, she just wants
the scarf. This is excitement for buying clothes.
2. As per Ego- When Rebecca goes to the TV interview with Luke Brandon then her
debt collector Derek Smeath is in the audience who confronts her publically about her
debts. Luke Brandon finds out that she lies to him that Derek Smeath is her ex-boyfriend
and was stalking her. After that she decides to sell her clothes including the green scarf
on auction to pay off her debts. This is a realistic approach when she realises that she
has to pay off her debts and she can’t escape that and she decides to sell the clothes to
pay the debts.
3. As per Superego- Rebecca sells the bridesmaid’s dress for Suze’s (her bestfirend)
wedding for the TV interview. And she lies to Luke Brandon about Derek Smeath being
her ex-boyfriend. Her father tells her that he will sell his recreational vehicle to help
her pay off her debts. Here is a moral approach as Rebecca declines her father’s offer
because she thinks that her father brought the vehicle with his hard work. In order to
make up with her bestfriends Suze and her boyfriend Luke she decides to pay off her
debts by selling her clothes on auction and buying back the bridesmaid dress for Suze’s
weddings. Here she realises that there are more important things in life than shopping,
because of which she lost her bestfriend and her love life was also affected.

Carl Jung’s Analytical Psychology

1. Extrovert- Extrovert (sometimes spelled extravert) means basically "turned

outward"—that is, toward things outside oneself. The word was coined by the eminent
psychologist C. G. Jung in the early 20th century. The opposite personality type, in
Jung's view, was the introvert. Extroverts seem to be favored by societies such as ours,
even though introverts seem to be on average more mentally gifted. Psychologists have
said that the only personality traits that can be identified in newborn infants are shyness
and lack of shyness, which are fairly close to—but not really the same as—introversion
and extroversion.
2. Introvert- Introverts are more comfortable living alone and being by themselves.
They depend on their “me time” to recharge; they become immersed in their inner world
and run the risk of losing touch with their surroundings or their outer world.
3. Sensation- Perception by means of the sense organs.
4. Intuition- Perceiving in unconscious way or perception of unconscious contents.
5. Thinking- Function of intellectual cognition; the forming of logical conclusions.
6. Feeling- Function of subjective estimation.
7. Judgemental- Figuring out what is good and what is not.
Analytical Psychology on Rebecca Bloomwood

Extovert- Rebecca Blooomwood is an extrovert in the Movie. She is always excited

when she sees new clothes at different shops. When buying a green scarf she falls short
of $20 and goes to a hotdog seller, she breaks the queue and goes straight to the seller
agreeing to buy 97 hotdogs at $20 cashback in order to buy the scarf. When she goes to
meet Finnish people with Luke Brandon, everybody think that she is also from Finlnd
and a Finnish person talks to her in Finnish language, which she doesn’t understand and
slaps the person in front of everybody.

Feeling- She feels fraud, because she is giving everybody financial advice when at
the same time, she is in the hole with all of her debt that she needs to pay off.

Thinking- Rebecca Bloomwood, doesn't necessarily live in reality. She doesn't know
how to correctly confront her problems, or even know how to handle them.

Judgemental- Rebecca lies her way through her interview with Luke, the editor of
Successful Savings. She tells him things that are financial, and she has no idea what
she is talking about.
She tells Luke that she a worthy of the job, and would be a good fit for the journalist
position.
Rebecca feels ashamed most of the book, because in the beginning, she is ashamed of
how much money she still needs to pay, and she is also ashamed to tell her parents,
because they save all of their money and use it wisely.
She also feels sadness, because she almost lost her best friend in a fight that they
have about Rebecca's shopping habits, and her ways of dealing with money.
Little did Rebecca know, she sent the letter to Ellete, and the fashion piece to
Successful Savings by mistake.
Luke saw her fashion piece, and was rather impressed with her work, so he gave her
the journalist position at his magazine because he knew she would do well.
She became a big journalist before she messed up, and was getting closer to Ellete,
with her article that she wrote called "The Girl in the Green Scarf," and she had an
interview on live television about it, but also had a wedding to go to for Sue. So, she
traded her bridesmaids dress in for an expensive dress for the interview, and she
couldn't get the bridesmaids dress back
Throughout the book, she tried avoiding a debt collector by telling tons of lies and
making up excuses.
She was extremely talented with journalism. She always knew exactly what to write,
and everyone loved her articles and they were all so fond of her work.
Also, she was a very passionate person. Mostly, for her work because she kept with it,
and made sure that she got it done.
