SENATE PASSES USMCA - Trump, Trudeau, and Mexico’s then-President Enrique Peña Nieto signed the deal in November, but it
still needs to be ratified by all three governments. In May, the Trump administration struck a deal to end steel and aluminum tariffs on
Canada and Mexico, something both countries demanded if they were to pass the USMCA. The United States-Mexico-Canada
Agreement, or USMCA, will replace the current NAFTA agreement that governs trade in North America. The trade agreement has
been negotiated by the governments of The United States, Mexico and Canada, but still must be ratified be certain groups within these
governments.
Mexico has already signed off on the agreement, but Canada still needs to pass legislation before the agreement goes into
force. Implementation will take place some months after this is accomplished. For peanuts, the only change is that the quota for
peanut butter being shipped back into the United States from Canada has been eliminated. However, the re-exported peanut
butter must be made from peanuts of North American origin.
U.S. SIGNS PHASE ONE OF CHINA TRADE DEAL – Last week, the U.S. signed a Phase One agreement on trade with
China. As part of the deal, the Chinese have committed to purchasing $40 billion of U.S. agricultural products annually over the next
two years. There is a list of more than 200 products that may be included in these promised purchases, including peanuts.
However, at this point, there have been no reductions in tariffs, either from the U.S. on Chinese imports, or from the
Chinese on American imports. This may change in the coming months, but for now, the current tariff structure remains in place.
