CELL PHONE JAMMER

ABSTRACT
Nowadays mobile jammer devices are becoming civilian products rather than electronic warfare
devices, since with the increasing number of mobile phone users the need to disable mobile
phones in specific places where the ringing of cell phone would be disruptive has increased.
Jamming of a mobile-signal was confirmed by the blocking of the signals of the mobile-phones
when the phone indicated “no network”, thereby allowing no call to go through, with no
interference to other communication. It can be used in high-security areas like prisons, courts,
scientific research laboratories and military facilities. Also it can be used in examination halls,
university lecture rooms, libraries, concert halls, conference halls and in secure location where
telecommunication signals are unwanted.

This project is mainly intended to prevent the usage of mobile phones in places inside its
coverage without interfering with the communication channels outside its range, thus providing
a cheap and reliable method for blocking mobile communication in the required restricted areas
only. The circuits that used for Mobile jammers are Tuning Circuit, Voltage Controlled
Oscillator, RF Amplifier and Antenna.

1. INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background
A Mobile Jammer is a device that transmit signal on the same frequency at which the Mobile
system operates, the jamming success when the mobile phones in the area where the jammer is
located are disabled. Communication jamming devices were first developed and used by
military. Where tactical commanders use RF communications to exercise control of their forces,
an enemy has interest in those communications. This interest comes from the fundamental area
of denying the Successful transport of the information from the sender to the receiver.
Nowadays the mobile jammer devices are becoming civilian products rather than electronic
warfare devices, since with the increasing number of the mobile phone user the need to disable
mobile phone in specific places where the ringing of cell phone would be disruptive has
increased. These places included prison houses, university lecture rooms, libraries, concert halls,
meeting rooms, and other places where silence is appreciated.

This causes enough interference with the communication between cell phones and BTS to
make the phones unusable. Most cell phones use different bands to send and receive
communications from BTS. Jammers can work by either disrupting phone to BTS frequencies
or BTS to phone frequencies. A cell phone jammer is an instrument used to prevent cellular
phones from receiving and transmitting the mobile signals to a base station. When used, the
jammer effectively disables cellular phones in the area. These devices can be used in practically
any location, but are found primarily in locales where a phone call would be particularly
disruptive because silence required.
A cell phone works by communicating with its service network through a cell tower or base
station. Cell towers divide a city into small areas, or cells. As a cell-phone user drives down the
street, the signal is handed from tower to tower. A jamming device transmits on the same radio
frequencies as the cell phone, disrupting the communication between the phone and the cell
phone base station in the tower. Jamming devices overpower the cell phone by transmitting a
signal on the same frequency and at a high enough power that the two signals collide, and each
other out. To jam a cell phone, we need a device that broadcasts on the correct frequencies.

1.2 Problem Statement

In spite of the numerous advantages and usefulness of mobile phones, their rapid increase has
made mobile phones present everywhere and makes life difficult. Miss usage of mobile phones
has caused various problems in our daily lives and country. Some places where mobile
communication miss used are stated below:

I. In certain institutions that value security and safety such as prisons house, military,
laboratories fuel pumps etc. prohibit people from using their phones with in their premises, as
these phones could aid in criminal activities such as spying.

II. During national examinations students could use their mobile phones to either exchange
information through SMS or look up information from the internet. My project therefore seeks to
tackle the problems that arise from the use of mobile phones daily.

III. In places where some considerable amount of silence is required such as meetings halls,
libraries, lecture halls, court rooms etc. The intermittent ringing of peoples phones can disrupt
the silence needed in these places.

1.3 Objective

1.3.1 General Objective

The main objective of the project is to prevent cellular phone from receiving and transmitting the
mobile signals to the base station.

1.3.2 Specific Objective

Specifically the project deals with:-
 Design of mobile phone jammer device.
 Design of a noise signal that generates the signal that will interfere with the cell phone
signal.
 Disables mobile phones without causing any interference to other kinds of
communication.

1.4 Scope of the project

 The project is only applicable in countries which use dual band GSM phone
(900MHz and 1800MHz)
 The coverage area that the phone jammer will address depends upon the transmitter
power, but not indefinitely. It’s not possible to jam wide area using this device.

1.5 Application of the project

The most applications of cell phone jammer are:

1.5.1 Use of Cell Phone Jammer in Prison

It is well known fact that in the 21th century prisons all over the world faced the
new problem-cell phone jammer. Today, when the cellular phone is smart like a laptop
and small like a box of matches it has become necessary gadget for inmates.
Criminals rule their business from inside the prison, coordinate their efforts to escape Interfere
investigation process and get all the relevant in food line. Phantom Technologies LTD provides
wide range of different jamming devices which create "free cellular space" inside the prison and
prevent any possible cellular traffic. Our state-of- art technology implemented provides effective
and reliable jamming of the whole compound. After sight-survey provided our technical
engineers calculate the required output power and the quantity of devices needed for the concrete
object. After final calibration of the antennas no cellular calls would be possible inside of the
compound. Moreover there is a number of jamming options that can be supplied.

1.5.2 Use of Cell Phone Jammer in Class Room and during National Exam

Nowadays as the cell phone becomes so popular and handy, everyone has their own cell phone.
Evens kids also have the latest cell phone available in the market. Even though teachers have
more knowledge than student, but student are smarter than teacher in using technology. Today
cell phones are widely used in classroom, for chatting, surfing net. Etc. During lectures also the
students are using cell phone, which reduced their concentration towards lecture, and when some
cell phone rings during lecture, it will disturb the whole class. To avoid this cell phone jammer
can be used in classroom. In the international schools and colleges phone jammer have used, in
specific area and time to avoid any interruption during lectures, and to be focused towards study.
Also, as the technology has vastly developed, cheating ways become increased. Some students
cheat with the help of their smart phone, during exam. To avoid this cell phone jammer must be
placed in examination center during any exam.

1.5.3. Use of Cell Phone Jammer in Conference Room

Use of cell phone is not allowed in conference room. In any serious meeting, or in conference
room if your cell phone rings up, it’s very awkward movement and it’s difficult to face your
boss. If a boss don’t want employee to use their cell phone during the Conference time, then the
only way is to use a cell phone jammer.

1.5.4. Use of Cell Phone Jammer in Hospital

In hospital it is clearly written to keep their cell phone silent, but many people does not follow
the instruction, and the terrible ringtone make the patient disturb. During any operation or
surgery it is very important to keep the phone off, as can reduced the concentration towards
surgery which make risk the life of patient. Also the phone signals frequency can interrupt with
the machines like brain scanner, CT scan, X-RAY which can disturb the process. Hence cell
phone should be used to avoid it.

1.5.5. Use of Cell Phone Jammer in Military

Cell phone jamming devices were originally developed for law enforcement and
the military to interrupt communications by criminals and terrorists. Police can block phone calls
during a drug raid so suspects can't communicate outside the area. Cell-phone jammers can be
used in areas where radio transmissions are dangerous, (areas with a potentially explosive
atmosphere), such as chemical storage facilities or grain elevators. Corporations use jammers to
stop corporate espionage by blocking voice transmissions and photo transmissions from camera
phones. On the more questionable end of the legitimacy spectrum, there are rumors that hotel
chains install jammers to block guests' cell-phone usage and force them to use in room phones at
high rates.

1.5.6. Use of Cell Phone Jammer in Library

In library as the cell phone is not allowed, ringing of phone can disturb the library atmosphere
and also the student which studious towards their study get distracted due to cell phone. Hence,
cell phone jammer must be a great solution.

2. LITERATURE REVIEW

2.1 History of mobile phone telephony

The development of wireless communication systems started in the 1930s with the use of
'Walkie-talkies' during the Second World War to enable foot soldiers to stay in contact with the
headquarters (Elliott and Philips, 2004). In 1946, AT&T Bell introduced the first commercial
radiotelephone service in the US, which allowed communication between mobile users in cars
and the public fixed network. In the 1960s, Bell Systems launched the Improved Mobile
Telephone Service (IMTS), which laid the basis for commercial-sector mobile communications.
Developments in microprocessor technologies in the late 1970s and early 1980s enabled the
introduction of the reliable wireless communications system, the so-called first generation.
First generation network - 1G
The first generation wireless technologies, also known as 1G, were relatively simple and used
analogue signals. Mobile phone handsets based on 1G technology were mainly used by
government agencies and the military before this technology came into general use in the
business domain in the 1980s (Elliott and Philips, 2004). The systems in Europe and the USA
had in common that they provided coverage of a very large area by using only one transmitter
mast. The coverage area of a mast was fairly large, up to 150km, and required minimal
infrastructure. Moreover, due to the limited number of available frequency channels, only a small
number of subscribers could be connected to the mobile phone network (Walke et al., 2003).
Second Generation Networks - 2G
In the late 1980s and early 1990s, the popularity of wireless communications grew and increased
the demand for network capacity. Together with the disadvantages of analogue 1G system, this
led to the development of the second generation wireless system based on digital technology.
Digital signals have different transmission properties than analogue signals and use binary
coding using sequences of 0s and 1s to construct a signal's unique pattern. Digital signals use
digital samplers and codec’s to convert analogue voice data into digital data. Digital signals can
be precisely duplicated by the receiving base station and send to its destination. This process
results in a lower error rate than analogue transmission correction which results in clearer voice
reception (Deitel et al., 2002). In addition, digital traffic is relatively simple to encrypt in order to
prevent eavesdropping (Stallings, 2005).
With GSM it was also made possible to send and receive limited amounts of data via the Short
Messaging Service (SMS) and mobile internet browsing via the wireless Applications Protocol
(WAP) (Elliot and Philips, 2004).
Third Generation Networks - 3G

Third generation mobile telephony (3G) is the successor to the 2G and 2.5G systems. 3G
improved previous systems by providing enhanced security and encryption features,
improvements in screen displays and the ability to handle multimedia data, such as graphics and
video streaming. 3G allows faster data exchange with data transmission rates up to 1920kbits per
Second, this enables the support of greater voice and data customers. Support can be provided
for a wide variety of mobile equipment. 3G technologies were first introduced in Japan in 2001
and spread to Europe and the USA in 2002. UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications
System) is the third generation mobile phone technology mainly used in Europe and also in
Japan. It uses the GSM infrastructure and UMTS/GSM dual-mode phones sold in Europe are
able to make and receive calls on both networks.

Power supply

The power supply is an important part of the jammer. The power supply provides the required
electrical energy to the whole circuitry. Any power supply consists of transformer, rectification,
filter and regulator.

The IF sections role is to generate the tuning voltage (signal) for the VCO in the radio frequency
(RF) section, so that the output of the VCO is swept through the desired range of frequencies
(from minimum to the desired maximum frequency). The output of this section is basically a
triangular wave to which noise is added. This is then offset at a proper amount of DC value to
obtain the desired tuning voltage or signal.
The components of the IF Section are:
 Triangular Wave Generator
 Noise Generator
 Op-Amp in Summer Configuration (Signal Mixer)
 Diode–Clamper (Offset Circuit)

RF (radio frequency) section

The Radio Frequency (RF) section is the most important part of the jammer, since its output is
what would interfere with the downlink frequency (mobile receive). It basically consists of:-
1. Voltage Controlled Oscillator (VCO)
2. Radio Frequency (RF) Power Amplifier
3. Antenna(s)
