In an experiment laser light of wavelength 633nm is incident on a grating.

A series of bright spots are seen on a screen placed some distance from the grating.
The distance between these spots and the central spot is shown.

(a) Calculate the number of lines per metre on the grating. 3

(b) The laser is replaced with another laser and the experiment repeated.
With this laser the bright spots are closer together.

How does the wavelength of the light from this laser compare with that from
the original laser?
You must justify your answer. 2

The apparatus for an experiment showing what happens when monochromatic light
passes through a grating is shown below.

A pattern of light and dark fringes is observed on the screen.

The grating has 300 lines per millimetre and the wavelength of the red light is
650nm.

(a) Explain how the bright fringes are produced. 1

(b) Calculate the angle θ of the second order maximum. 2
(c) The red filter is replaced by a blue filter. Describe the effect of this change on
the pattern observed.
You must justify your answer. 2

Two speakers attached to a computer are placed at opposite sides of a room

A boy loads a music programme and plays a note on the keyboard which sounds
through the speakers. He walks from one side of the room to the other and notices
that he hears the note loudly at some parts of the room and hardly at all in other parts.

The pattern of loudness is shown below.

The boy goes to the point labelled X which is equidistant from both speakers. He
walks across the room and notices that the first quiet area is at R. The distance PR is
617cm and QR is 600cm at this point.

(a) Explain why the boy hears a pattern of loud and quiet areas as he walks across
the room. 2
(b) (i) Calculate the wavelength of the sound wave. 2
(ii) Calculate the frequency of the sound wave. 2
(c) What would happen to the sound pattern if a note of a much higher frequency
were played?
Explain your answer. 2
