OVERTURE
“Rome & its papal power gave in to spiritual corruption. But in lands beyond the jurisdiction of Rome, there
existed for many centuries bodies of Christians who remained almost wholly free from papal corruption. In every
age, there were witnesses for God- men who cherished faith in Christ as the only mediator between God & man,
who held the Bible as the only rule of life, & who hallowed the true Sabbath. But of those who resisted the
encroachments of papal power, the Waldenses stood foremost. Their time honored motto “a light shining in
darkness” spoke through the ages of true faithfulness and zeal.” (EGW, The Great Controversy, Ch. 4, p. 80, 81.)
(Amidst the background noises of harsh voices & people screaming, a 9 year old ARIA and her MOTHER enter
the stage. MOTHER takes her to CERF)
MOTHER: My gratitude for your kindness to my family knows no bounds. I may not be able to repay you Cerf,
but I know, our God in heaven will bless you unceasingly.
CERF: Please, it is only right that I care for a fellow “light-bearer.” You and your husband have changed the lives
of many people in this area, my family included. I have more reason to be grateful to you.
MOTHER: Aria, this is Sir Cerf de Vallans, a good friend of your papa. From now on, you will be staying with
him.
ARIA: Good evening sir.
CERF: Please, call me Uncle Cerf. (MOTHER starts sobbing)
ARIA: Mama? What’s wrong? Why are you crying?
MOTHER: Oh, its nothing, child. Come give me a hug.
ARIA: Are you leaving me?
MOTHER: Yes Aria. Mama has to go back.
ARIA: No! Don’t go back! They’ll take you like they did papa! Don’t leave me! Please.
MOTHER: Aria, I must go back. This is something I have to do.
ARIA: Why are they so cruel to us? Why did they take papa away?
MOTHER: Its because we have something they don’t. The most precious thing in the world.
ARIA: What’s that?
MOTHER: The light of truth, this. (Uncovers bible). Sometimes, people don’t want the truth. That is why they
don’t like us very much. This is why they took your papa. And this is also why I must go back. So that I can show
others the light. (Gives bible to Aria). Here, keep it.
ARIA: But, what if the bad people catch you? What if they don’t want the light? What if they take you away just
like papa?
MOTHER: Oh, sweet child.
---------------------------------------------SONG: Aria & mother duet---------------------------------------------------------
Remember the bible story of the cross?
ARIA: Yes mama. I remember how Jesus died for our sins, so that we can live forever with Him.
MOTHER: Yes, that’s it. That’s all you have to remember.
ARIA: When are you coming back? Will it be a long time? I can wait. I’ll miss you though.
MOTHER: Aria, remember how your papa always talked about heaven? Where we can get to be with Jesus.
Where there will be no more pain, no more crying & no more parting. Whatever happens in this world, when we
get there, I’ll never be separated from you again. I must go now. You do well while I’m gone. Be an obedient girl
& never forget what we taught you. Understand?
ARIA: Yes mama. I love you.
MOTHER: I love you too. Goodbye child. (Walks away crying, but never turns around)
CERF: (Takes Aria’s hand in his) Let’s go Aria.

SCENE 1
(Setting: Town square. Aria is on an elevated area, like a stage. Aria’s back is to the audience. The townspeople
have gathered to hear her sing.)
------------------------------------------------------ARIA’S SONG-------------------------------------------------------------
KEV: (Approaches Aria) I swear, your voice gets lovelier by the day.
ARIA: (collecting the coins) There you go with your teasing again. Don’t you have to help Uncle Cerf with the
patients today?
KEV: Well.. You know how I am; always in search for beauty in all its forms. And there’s nothing beautiful about
those patients. How can you condemn me to a life of caring for the deformed & sickly & -
ARIA: (Covers his mouth) Stop! Please stop Kev. How can you possibly talk about those poor people that way?
KEV: Its true. Besides, I’d much rather listen to you sing all day.
ARIA: (Sighs) You’re hopeless. Well, if you’re going to be insistent, be a gem & help me pick up these coins
would you?
KEV: (helps in picking them up. Takes one, just stares at it) You know, you’d make wonderful money if you
decided to go on the road. You could go & visit other towns, sing for people & make a name for yourself. I’m
sure there would be a great deal who’d pay to hear you sing. (Flips the coin & catches it)
ARIA: I would, wouldn’t I? (Smiles, looks at the coins in her hand) Hmm.. This is good enough. Let’s buy some
bread for those poor orphans I saw earlier. You have to help me.
KEV: Only after you allow me to sketch you.
ARIA: What?
KEV: It’ll only take an hour. You don’t sing long enough for me to have enough time to sketch you.
ARIA: (Hesitates) Hmm… No.
KEV: I’ll pay you. (Shows her the coin he’s been holding this whole time)
ARIA: (Takes the coin) No. (Smiles).
KEV: (Chuckles) Oh well. Some other day then. (Both move to exit, but are disturbed by a procession)
ANNOUNCER: His Holiness, Bishop Johannes de Offredus is coming this way. Make way for His Holiness!
JOHANNES: People of Turin! I come with grave news. Christendom has been infected with heresy. There are
people who call themselves “light-bearers,” known to some as the Waldenses, who are blighting our town with
false teachings. They claim to spread good tidings, and yet discourage us from attending Sunday Mass! They
criticize the pope for giving out indulgences! And they preach that it is wrong for priests to hear confessions!
Light-bearers, no. They are heretics! Thankfully, with your assistance and with God’s help, we have a solution.
His Majesty, Charles III, Duke of Savoy, with the blessing of the Archbishop of Turin has commanded the purging
of these people from society. Good people of Turin, you will have riches on earth as well as in heaven if you aid
in this purging! The pope himself will absolve you and your family of all sin if you successfully help us.
If you are found to be harboring or are in any way connected to these people, God’s wrath will be poured upon
your soul & your family’s soul. No mercy is to be shown to these heretics! There is only one punishment they
deserve, & that is death.
(People disperse)

SCENE 2
(Setting: Church, after mass. Father Johannes is with his niece Joana. Gerard de Vallans is nearby, but cannot
be seen by both. He enters in the middle of their conversation. He observes for the meantime, until only Joana is
left.)
JOHANNES: How was mass, my child?
JOANA: It was refreshing, uncle. The implications were not lost on me. And the preacher was very convincing.
JOHANNES: My dear niece. You can never lie to me. Your words speak of praise, but your countenance tells a
different story.
JOANA: Forgive me, but the preacher spoke of a life of humility. A life of lowliness & simplicity, very much
like that of Christ’s here on earth. But why is it, that most of the religious leaders, the Pope included, hoard such
enormous wealth & treasures. They parade themselves in such wondrous fashion, as if they were gods here on
earth. Aren’t they supposed to reflect Jesus’ example of humbleness?
JOHANNES: If this were the case, Joana, then shouldn’t the religious leaders be among the poorest of the poor?
How can we better serve God without the means to do so? I admit, there are a few who abuse their power. There
are those who are blinded by wealth. But that does not mean all of us do so. We just better serve God this way.
JOANA: I just think it’s very unfair that some have tremendous wealth while others are on the streets fighting for
life & salvation.
JOHANNES: You have a gentle heart Joana. But those people are not your concern. Those people are sinners
suffering the wages of their sin. If God wanted them to live, He would make a way for them. But it is my opinion
that those people out there are not deserving of God’s love. But you & I, we are different. Do not stain your pure
soul with those of sinners.
JOANA: (Nods head begrudgingly) Yes, uncle. By the way, I was reading the scriptures one night, & I came
across this verse in Exodus. It said, “thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image.” We have many in our
church. Aren’t we trespassing upon a commandment? I have been meaning to ask you this for so long. Why-
JOHANNES: (Cuts her off) Looks like someone has been rummaging through the Holy Book again. Dear child,
this is exactly what I was afraid of. The Bible should only be read by pure & holy men. Otherwise, the words may
be corrupted by those who read it. It is dangerous. (Looks at her sternly) Give me the key.
JOANA: But-
JOHANNES: Do as I say, Joana (Says it firmly, while gripping her shoulders).
JOANA: Here. (Hands him the key to the padlocked Bible)
JOHANNES: (Takes the key, tests it on the padlocked Bible, then keeps it) (Sighs) Child, please do understand.
All I do is for the salvation of your soul. (Looks at her more compassionately) There is danger in misinterpreting
the words of Christ. When people use those words for their own gain, then the truth is corrupted. Come now. Do
not be so sad. I will guide you properly regarding these matters.
JOANA: Yes, your Holiness.
JOHANNES: I shall be off then. After you say your prayers, come home immediately. We shall talk more about
truth. Real truth. (Exits)
JOANA: (Quietly) What is the truth? (Starts praying) Mary, mother of Jesus, help me. I am sinner. Forgive me.
I am a sinner. I- (stops, sighs).
GERARD: “Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above,
or that is in the earth beneath or that is in the water under the earth.”
JOANA: Who’s there?
GERARD: (Continues) “Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve theme: for I the Lord thy God am a
jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third & fourth generation of them that
hate me.”
JOANA: (Falls down abruptly to her knees) Lord, is this you? I am not worthy of your goodness!
GERARD: “And showing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, & keep my commandments.”
JOANA: Have mercy on your servant Lord!
GERARD: (comes out) Stand up, woman. (Helps her up)
JOANA: (Amazed, believes Gerard to be an angel) Are you? Is this really? I can’t believe it, God’s saint, in front
of my eyes! You look human enough.
GERARD: That’s because I am human. I’m not a saint. Nor am I God’s angel.
JOANA: How did you? (Realization hits her) You were listening to my uncle & I talk! How rude! You fooled
me! Why you misler. (Turns to go away)
GERARD: It was you who chose to be fooled. Believe me, my lady, it was not my intention to confuse you.
JOANA: You’re a scoundrel! If we weren’t on holy ground right now, I would put you in your place!
GERARD: I only meant to share what I knew. Seeing as how the good father took away the key to the Bible, I
decided to put you at ease.
JOANA: (Amazed yet skeptical) You know the Scriptures.
GERARD: By heart. In their original form. My name is Gerard de Vallans, a scholar in the academy.
JOANA: Joana de Offredus.
GERARD: Would you like me to teach you a few things? About the Scriptures, that is.
JOANA: I’d love- wait. No. My uncle would not approve of this meeting. Nor of the proposition you just made.
(Moves to walk away) Good day sir (hurriedly shakes his hand), may God bless you!
GERARD: Wait! I can tell you what I know of the truth. Bible truth.
JOANA: From you? A scholar who has no standing in society as of yet? What can I learn from you that I cannot
from my uncle, who is, may I add, His Holiness Johannes de Offredus?
GERARD: Ah, but you are curious. That is enough. If you want to know the truth, then find me in the Palazzio
Gardens tomorrow at noon. (Exits)
JOANA: (Dumbstruck) Why that scoundrel! Leaving a lady alone to herself. He certainly has no manners. (Sighs).
But I am the least bit curious. Dear father, forgive me. I just want to know the truth.

SCENE 3
(Setting: In the de Vallans’ home. Kev is sketching, Cerf is reading & Aria is getting food ready.)
GERARD: (Enters) I’m home!
ARIA: Perfect! You’re just in time Gerard.
CERF: How goes your day son?
ARIA: Uncle Cerf, before Gerard regales you with his stories, I suggest we gather round the dinner table, before
the food grows cold.
CERF: I have no objections to that. Come around now dear children. Kev. Kev! Boy, put down that brush and
come to the table!
KEV: (Stumbles a bit on his way to the table) Ow!
ARIA: Serves you right for delaying our evening meal.
CERF: Let us say grace. (Everyone holds hands & closes their eyes) Dear Heavenly Father, we thank you for this
meal. May you bless it, that it may give us sustenance and good health. We thank for we are constantly assured
of your love and mercy in all that we have. In your name we pray, amen.
ARIA/KEV/GERARD: (Altogether) Amen.
CERF: Well Gerard? I can see how today’s events have excited you.
GERARD: I met Joana de Offredus today.
ARIA: The bishop’s niece?
GERARD: Yes indeed. I told her that I knew the scriptures by heart.
ARIA: But Gerard, that’s dangerous!
CERF: Aria is right. I cannot emphasize enough just how dangerous it is to make acquaintances with someone
such as her. Then again, our duty is to spread the message to everyone.
GERARD: Yes Father, I am aware. I will take precautions. But, (sigh) I have to talk to her. I could see how her
soul thirsts for the truth. I believe she simply wants answers. And I intend to give her just that.
CERF: Gerard. Be very careful. Should you or any of our real identities be discovered, (sigh) it will be the end of
us. I only ask that you balance your evangelistic efforts with safety.
GERARD: Yes father.
ARIA: Uncle Cerf, I’ve made something for you. I’d forgotten to give it to you yesterday, as we were both busy
looking after all those patients.
CERF: A gift! How surprising dearest one.
ARIA: Here it is. It’s a new cloak. I’ve sewn the insides of it in a way that it contains hidden pockets. You won’t
need to worry about hiding your bible anymore. Now, you can go on healing people, and spreading the message
safely.
CERF: How wonderful! Thank you dearest Aria!
GERARD: How ingenious! (takes the cloak from Cerf & feels it) If its not too much to ask, would you mind
making me one Aria?
ARIA: Not a problem at all. It will be my pleasure Gerard.
KEV: Me too!
ARIA: Hmm… No, you need to pay me.
KEV: But why?
ARIA: (In a smug tone) Because, you took some coins from my basket today. Oh, that explains the new set of
colors you have! How very resourceful of you.
KEV: (Nervous laughter) Here I thought I wouldn’t be caught.
ARIA: Very funny Kev.
KEV: You know I only want to sketch you. But you won’t let me.
ARIA: If sketching me will stop your annoying disturbance, then fine. I’ll let you sketch me.
KEV: Really? Thank you! Tomorrow then, in the town square.
ARIA: Fine.

SCENE 4
(Setting: A typical classroom setting. With 7-10 students)
JOHANNES: Good day scholars. I am Johannes de Offredus. But of course, you already know that. (Some
laughter is heard) Some of you have had the pleasure to listen to my sermons at church. I am here today to instruct
you on the basics of philosophical debate. You do not know this, but during my prime, I was hailed as the “best
debater” of our region. (Some clapping & sounds of awe are heard) Now, now, you can be next too. After all,
you have the best teacher. (Laughs boisterously).
To the best student of this class, I will be awarding this key! This is the key to the Holy Book, which I personally
had decorated & colored during my early years in France. As you know, only the most privileged & Holiest men
are allowed to open, much less read it. But to the student who shows much promise, I will be gifting with the
opportunity to study the Bible at his convenience. Any questions?
GERARD: (Raises his hand) If you will, good Father. I have a question that’s been bothering me for so long.
JOHANNES: Of course. Pray tell. We are here to learn, after all.
GERARD: Why do we bind the people and forbid people from reading it? If its words contain truth, shouldn’t
we then be spreading it?
JOHANNES: The same words of truth can be twisted by men of limited understanding.
GERARD: But does not John 17:17 push us to “Sanctify them by the truth: Your word is truth?”
JOHANNES: It takes more than one bible verse to prove a point.
GERARD: John 4:24, “God is spirit & His worshipers must worship in the Spirit & in truth.” And John 8:32, tells
us that the truth alone can set us free! Furthermore-
JOHANNES: Careful scholar, “pride comes before a fall.” I can see you have extensive knowledge of the Bible,
yet we do not win arguments by bombarding people with verses which may differ in context.
GERARD: It is not out of pride that I speak. Rather, from indignation that Bible truth can be attacked so easily.
Is it not our duty to speak the truth?
(There is a long silence where everyone simply stares at the two)
JOHANNESS: (Laughs his signature laugh & claps his hands) Brilliant! Simply brilliant! That right there
students, is an example of using your reasoning spirit to build up premises to your conclusion. A promising
student! What is your name scholar?
GERARD: Gerard de Vallans.
JOHANNES: Very good. I will answer your question at another time. Since you show such promise, I might as
well be gifting this key to you. May it serve you well. (Gives Gerard the key to the Bible)
GERARD: It would be my honor.
JOHANNES: Good, good. We’ll see what more you have to offer, Gerard. Alright, let us continue. I have a list
of manuscripts I highly recommend for reading. One is…. (Voice fades)

SCENE 5
(Aria & Cerf are hurriedly walking along the streets)
ARIA: Uncle Cerf, can you tell me where were going? Who is the patient? And why all the secrecy?
CERF: (Sighs) Dear Aria, you’ve always been so inquisitive. Be patient. You’ll soon find out.
(The two exit. JOANA enters.) (Sound of murmuring, people praying)
JOANA: (Stares at all the people. Faces audience. Does the cross sign & whispers a prayer) Lord, am I doing
the right thing? I don’t know why, but no matter what uncle tells me, I feel like there’s something missing. I have
to know the truth.
(JOANA exits. CERF & ARIA enter again)
ARIA: Uncle Cerf, this place- (She become speechless)
CERF: I know what you’re thinking. This is the place for the village outcasts; where all the unforgivable sinners
go. The church may have abandoned them, but we light bearers simply cannot.
ARIA: I trust you uncle. There is no limit to where God’s light can reach.
CERF: Thank you.
(They approach a man in a cot. Terribly weak.)
CERF: Nathan? Its me, Cerf.
NATHAN: Doctor de Vallans! (Tries to get up) But-
CERF: Lie still! You are in no position to move about. Aria, please give me a clean bandage. (Takes the bandage
from Aria & bandages the side of Nathan)
NATHAN: Why have you come here? This is no place for a respectable doctor like yourself.
CERF: Leave that to me Nathan. I come not as a doctor, but as a friend.
NATHAN: I’m dying, aren’t I?
CERF: (Sighs & remains silent)
NATHAN: I can’t die. I need blessing from the priest, otherwise my soul will remain in hell. Please help me! I
need to speak to Father Johannes!
CERF: Nathan, settle down. Father Johannes will not see you. You are an outcast of the church.
NATHAN: My crimes are many. I am only deserving of this. But you have to understand me Cerf, I will not die
without attaining forgiveness from God! Until I feel His saving power, I will not die!
CERF: Here is my ward. To calm you down, she will sing a song for you.
-----------------------------------------ARIA’S song: Forgiveness & Healing--------------------------------------------
NATHAN: That song.. Is everything true? Is there truly forgiveness? Cerf, tell its true!
CERF: Nathan, yes. There is forgiveness. “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins &
to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
NATHAN: But, I need a priest! Surely, I cannot come before God as I am. I am a sinner!
CERF: (Quoting a bible verse) Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens,
Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize
with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly to the
throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need (Heb. 4:14-16).
NATHAN: How do you know all this?
CERF: I was schooled in the Bible truths from valued friends, my ward, Aria’s parents. They came to me, &
saved me when I was just like you. They risked their lives for my soul’s salvation.
NATHAN: What must I do then?
CERF: Believe. Believe with all your heart in Christ and His saving power. Only then can you be saved!
NATHAN: I believe! Cerf, I believe!
CERF: Then you need not fear death no longer. Pray with me. (Takes Nathan’s hands in his & both bow their
heads in prayer) Dear Lord, here is your child. Long has he strayed from your loving arms. Now, he comes
humbly before you, aware of his transgressions, asking for forgiveness which no earthly priest can give. Forgive
him Father, as only you can. And grant him the peace that passes all understanding. Amen.
NATHAN: (Sighs) Thank you, my friend. Thank you. (Falls asleep)
CERF: Let us go, Aria. Our work here is done.

SCENE 6
(Joana is in the gardens alone. There is 1 bench nearby good for two people. She is waiting nervously)
JOANA: (Pacing nervously; doesn’t see Gerard enter)
GERARD: Good evening, my lady. (Gives a regal bow)
JOANA: (Turns to see him) You’re late!
GERARD: As a matter of fact, I was here 10 minutes earlier than you.
JOANA: So where were you?
GERARD: I was hiding behind those bushes. (Gives a mischievous smile)
JOANA: I’ve noticed you have an unpleasant habit of sneaking up and stalking people. It is most unseemly, sir.
GERARD: I only wanted to make sure the coast is clear, and that you truly wanted to hear what I was about to
tell you.
JOANA: A test? I see. You don’t trust me enough.
GERARD: Its not you I don’t trust. I have seen for myself your curiosity for Bible truth. I am distrustful of your
upbringing.
JOANA: I see. Well, get on with it! I don’t have much time. If a lady of my station were seen alone with you,
why people would talk!
GERARD: (Chuckles) I assure you, I most certainly would not want to be a part of that. Let’s take a seat, shall
we? (Leads her to a nearby bench)
JOANA: Well, aren’t we going to start?
GERARD: I am about to show you something. It is of great importance. Mind you, if word of this gets out, I
could be arrested and killed.
JOANA: What are you saying?
GERARD: I need to be assured of your confidence. Promise me, you will not tell a soul.
JOANA: (Takes a moment) I promise.
GERARD: (Heavy sigh) (Takes out his bible from his cloak) Here. This is why I know so much. Its an original.
Copied by my own hand. I’ve memorized most of it by heart.
JOANA: A bible! But I thought- it can’t be! How could you have this?
GERARD: Joana, I’m one of them; “light-bearers.” Your uncle believe us to be heretics.
JOANA: (Stands up abruptly) You! A heretic. I should have known. No-no. No! This is wrong. I shouldn’t be
here.
GERARD: And yet, here you are. Why do you think Joana? Why were you so curious to find out? I know you
can hear the voice which tells you to listen. That is the Holy Spirit talking to you Joana! Heed it. Everything your
uncle ever told you, is wrong!
JOANA: My uncle is a holy man! Revered by the catholic church and-and, well, he-he’s (stuttering) he can’t be
wrong!
GERARD: Why not Joana? After all, he is only a man.
JOANA: But, all this time (exasperated). How could I have not known?
GERARD: How could you? Your own uncle is blinded by a false pretense of power. He would never tell you the
truth.
JOANA: Oh Gerard! I wish you didn’t tell me!
GERARD: With this knowledge, I am completely at a disadvantage. My life is in your hands Joana.
JOANA: Precisely! I don’t want to be in charge of your life!
GERARD: Well then, why don’t you go and tell your beloved uncle the Bishop who I truly am? Go. I’ll be right
here waiting for the arrest. (Joana looks at him hesitatingly) Go on!
JOANA: No. I can’t. (Exasperated, she takes a seat)
GERARD: (Smiles) Thank you. I must say, I enjoy my life. I wouldn’t want to die without first introducing you
to the Scriptures.
JOANA: (Frowns) I hate you, Gerard de Vallans.
GERARD: (Feigns hurt) Oh, but that is against the commandments my dear! For you must “love your enemies.”
JOANA: Oh, you are impossible!
GERARD: (Laughs) Alright, that’s enough jesting now. Here, tell me first what you know.
(Music fills in. The two continue to act and search the bible together)
JOANA: Gerard, you are the most reckless person I know. Why did you take such great risks by telling me what
you know?
GERARD: I didn’t want you to continue living in darkness. (Smiles) And I do believe that God has entrusted me
with a mission.
JOANA: Really? And what mission is that?
GERARD: You, Joanna. You are my mission. Until I have taught you all I know, I will not rest.
-----------------------------------------------------Gerard’s Song --------------------------------------------------------------
JOANA: I must go now.
GERARD: Wait! I have something to give you. (Takes out his bible, puts it in her hand)
JOANA: Your bible? But-
GERARD: No need to worry. (Rakish smile) Not to brag or anything, but I’ve memorized entire passages.
JOANA: (Shakes head) You really are reckless.
GERARD: Reckless, but faithful.
JOANA: I thank you, Gerard de Vallans. I shall see you again, for more “lessons.”
GERARD: Til next time, Joana de Offredus.

SCENE 7
(Scene opens to show 3 women, selling their goods along the roadside. The 3 women are at the front of the stage,
talking directly to the audience.)
LADY 1: Fresh bread! Come and buy fresh bread for your table!
LADY 2: Sir, here is some beautiful fabric. Perhaps you’d like one for your wife? Or mother perhaps?
LADY 3: Ma’am here are some fresh vegetables from the garden. Healthy and vibrant.
(The 3 move to the side when the main characters come in. Somber music plays.)
JOHANNES: (Walking with an imperious air) I will rid this region of all heretics and scoundrels. God be my
witness! As long as I am breathing, no “light-bearer” will live to see the day!
GERARD: Dear Lord, I long to be a martyr for your glory! Grant me my heart’s desire.
JOANA: I am unsure & uncertain. The more I search the scriptures, the more I thirst for truth! Dear Father, help
me.
KEV: What can I do to share your gospel, Father? All I can do is paint pretty pictures. I dedicate myself to you,
O Lord. Use me.
ARIA: Uncle Cerf, look at all those people. Begging and hurting themselves to attain forgiveness. Falsely
believing that the priests and bishops can give them what they want! I feel so alone, uncle Cerf. There’s only us,
and so many of them.
CERF: Ah, but dear Aria, we are not alone. (Smiles) Look around you. The Lord’s work will continue, by many
or by few.
(The 3 ladies and other characters, go downstage seemingly distribute Bible tracts to the audience)

ACT 2
SCENE 1
(Scene opens with guards & Johannes poring over a table filled with parchment & tracts)
GUARD 1: Your Holiness, these are all we could confiscate. We have arrested 50 people who have confessed to
being “light bearers.”
JOHANNES: 50? 50! (Laughs hysterically, & starts crumpling the bible tracts) To think that our village, MY
village is this polluted! Hear me, I want every last one of them. Capture them! Spread fear in the hearts of the
people. Let everyone know that the church will not tolerate this injustice!
GUARD 1: Yes, your Holiness. We will obey. And- (clears throat)
JOHANESS: Yes, what’s wrong?
GUARD 1: We’ve confiscated a painting from one of those arrested. He wouldn’t tell me who painted it. The
picture is quite distressing. It shows the pope in a very unflattering light.
(Project image of a painting: pope is on one side (glorious & pomous), & Jesus on the other, humble & meek)
JOHANESS: Let me see! (looks at the painting) What is this?
GUARD 1: What shall we do?
JOHANESS: (Looks the guard in the eye. Returns painting.) Do whatever needs to be done.
GUARD 1: (Nods head once then exits.)
(Just then, JOANNA enters)
JOHANNES: What’s on your mind, Joana?
JOANA: Is it really necessary to have all these people tortured and killed? All they did was share some Bible
tracts! If you ask me uncle, they were helping the church!
JOHANNES: They teach people not to attend Sunday mass & bring their confessions to the priests! If we allow
them to go on, we will end up with no more worshippers!
JOANA: (Whispers to herself) And no more coins, apparently.
JOHANNES: (His back to Joanna. Fixes his robe) Are you harboring doubt in your heart? (Faces her) Perhaps,
you should have a confession.
JOANA: Yes. Perhaps, I should. In fact, I’d like to do it now.
JOHANNES: Oh? Let’s hear it.
JOANA: I confess…. (Long pause, while she musters her bravery) that I believe in the truth that the “light-
bearers” preach. The people you have wrongly accused of being heretics. I confess that their faith, is the one true
faith!
JOHANNES: Joana! Where is this coming from?
JOANA: I confess that the Bible is the only rule of life!
JOHANNES: Joana, stop this at once!
JOANA: I confess that the Sabbath is the true day of worship!
JOHANNES: You are trying my patience, woman!
JOANA: I confess and declare that Christ is the only mediator between God & man! It is not for priests or even
the pope to hear and forgive sins. Nor is it for you, uncle!
JOHANNES: If one more word comes out-
JOANA: And I confess, that I know that you are afraid of the truth.
JOHANNES: (Slaps her) How dare you. How dare you! You turned out exactly as your parents did. I have made
it my life’s mission to save your wretched soul, and this is how you repay me?
JOANA: My parents? What are you talking about?
JOHANNES: (Sighs) I had hoped to spare you from this pain Joana. It seems that try as I might, I cannot. They
too were infected with wrong beliefs. They were tried and found guilty. They died for their treason against the
church.
JOANA: (Shocked. Falls down to her knees) Y-y-you, killed them! You?!
JOHANNES: (Kneels down in front of Joana) But I saved you! You must try to understand Joana, all I did was
for the salvation of your soul! I have given you the truth!
JOANA: No. No, uncle. You have only covered the truth.
JOHANNES: (Stand up. Suddenly cold & distant) Very well. I have no choice. I am sending you off on the next
trip. You will become a nun and spend your life dedicated to God & praying that your sins be forgiven!
JOANA: And what will happen to those people?
JOHANNES: They will meet the same fate as your parents did. Mark my words, Joana. I will leave no one alive.

SCENE 2
(The scene opens to show the 3 ladies, Kev & Aria huddled around in a semi-circle. They are obviously waiting)
LADY 1: (Hears a knock on the door) Who is it?
GERARD: Tis’ Gerard. And my father, Cerf.
LADY 2: Let them in.
(Lady 1, lets them in)
LADY 3: Cerf, we thought you’d never come.
CERF: Forgive me ladies. I had thought it safer to lose our tracks so that we won’t be followed.
KEV: Yes, that is wise.
LADY 1: So it is. Anyways, we have much to discuss tonight. Firstly, regarding our original plans.
LADY 2: Now that the papal proclamation has been read in every town and city in the Piedmont Valleys, we are
no longer safe.
LADY 3: And so, we suggest that we go back to the safety of the Waldensian mountain caves. Let us bide our
time and come back when we can safely assume our disguises.
CERF: Yes. I was thinking the same. It is no longer safe here. Just yesterday, 50 of our people were arrested for
having Bible tracts in their belongings. They will soon be tried, and- (heavy sigh), most likely executed. Yes, we
must go.
LADY 1: Let us travel separately then, to avoid suspicion. My sisters and I will leave within a fortnight. How
about your family, Cerf?
CERF: I have a different reason for going. There are many orphaned children of our own people in the next town.
I will leave tomorrow and take them with me to safety.
LADY 1: That’s a very admirable cause Cerf. I wish you well. And how about your children?
CERF: We will discuss it amongst ourselves first. We’ll let you know, the soonest we can.
LADY 2: Very well. Thank you for coming tonight.
LADY 3: We will be going ahead. Stay safe and may God be with you all.
(3 ladies exit) (The family of 4 stand around awkwardly, until Gerard breaks the silence)
GERARD: Father, I’m not going.
CERF: I thought you might say so. I cannot stop you Gerard. Do what you must do. But remember, do not rush
blindly for vainglory & self-exaltation. Do all, solely for the glory of God.
KEV: Nor am I, Father.
ARIA: Don’t be ridiculous Kev! We have to go. Didn’t you hear, its no longer safe here!
CERF: (Calms down Aria with a hand to her shoulder) This is quite a surprise, Kev. I know you to be very meek
and quiet. And yet, I realize that I cannot force about your decisions. Your lives have been dedicated to the Lord.
ARIA: But uncle Cerf!
CERF: They know what they’re doing, Aria.
ARIA: Well then, I’m staying too. Who’s going to look after all those poor patients when you’re gone, Uncle
Cerf? And, I couldn’t possibly leave these 2 to cook for themselves. Why, they’ll burn the house down!
CERF: (Takes Aria’s hands) Brave. So very brave. Just like your mother & father. You have been a blessing to
my household child. Thank you!
(Turns to Gerard) Come here. Risk all but truth and principle. (Turns to Kev) Kev. Lad, you are stronger in more
ways than you know. Give all to God.
I will be leaving earlier. Before I do, I ask only that you care for each other. It is possible that we may no longer
see each other in this life. If so, we will meet again in the clouds of glory.
(The 4 have a group hug)

SCENE 3
(Aria is alone, sewing clothes)
KEV: (Runs in, bloody & bruised) Aria.. Help me.
ARIA: Kev! What happened?
(Immediately sits him down & takes some bandages & medicine)
KEV: I almost got caught spreading bible tracts. I had to run away, but then I stumbled & fell.
ARIA: Oh, why do you keep on spreading those tracts even now! You know how dangerous it is to do so!
KEV: I had to Aria. I have to do my share!
ARIA: (Bandaging & cleaning up his wounds) Why did you have to be so adamant? If you don’t control this
prideful state of yours, who knows what will happen next time.
KEV: And waste an opportunity to spread the message? No. I will not be silenced.
ARIA: Pride comes before a fall.
KEV: This is not merely pride, Aria. I long to make the world see the fallacy of the popes! To open their eyes to
the injustices done against God! To make them see what true blasphemy is.
ARIA: Kev, please! Lower your voice. We were trained to be missionaries. Not martyrs! (Tightens bandage)
KEV: Ow! Hey! I thought you were supposed to be healing me. Not killing me.
ARIA: I don’t take in stubborn patients who don’t listen to what I have to tell them.
KEV: I’m sorry.
ARIA: Do you mean that?
KEV: I do. I’m sorry for scaring you. I know you’re only watching out for me. But you have to understand, the
truth cannot be kept in secret for long! Its like trying to hide a lamp in a bushel.
ARIA: Let someone else fight for truth, Kev. There are still many out there. Why can’t you just live a normal
artist’s life? You are gentle, and meek & I can’t imagine anything happening to you.
KEV: Aria, you & Gerard your talents. I have mine. And I believe we all have our missions. If no one else does
it, then who will? If not me, then who?
ARIA: You’re right, Kev. (Walks away)
KEV: Aria. Will you marry me?
ARIA: (Drops bowl of water) What?
KEV: I’ve always loved you. Ever since I could remember. When I hear your voice, its as if the colors of this
world get brighter and more vivid! I need you Aria. You must know that.
ARIA: But Kev, I-
KEV: All I want is to go with you to the town square each day and hear you sing. I know, I’m annoying and not
at all a perfect gentleman. I’ve been praying Aria. I’ve been asking God to give me you. It wasn’t supposed to be
this way. But seeing our circumstances, I don’t think there’ll ever be a perfect moment. So, Aria Vercelis, will
you marry me.
ARIA: (Touches his arm) Kev. I love you too. I’ve been praying the same prayer as you have.
KEV: (Incredulous) Really?
ARIA: (Chuckles) Yes.
KEV: So, does that mean-
ARIA: I’ll marry you, Kev de Vallans!
KEV: Yes! Whohoo! Yes! Oh, thank you Aria! I can’t believe I get to hear you sing for the rest of my life!
ARIA: Not so fast. You’ll have to pay, just like everyone else. (Smiles)
KEV: Really? (Saddened)
ARIA: Of course not, silly! (Laughs)
KEV: (Takes her hands in his) Meet me at the town square in an hour. I will be at the place where you usually
sing each morning. (Exits in a hurry)
ARIA: (Breaths a sigh of relief) Dear Father, thank you. You’ve been answering my prayer all along.

SCENE 4
(Setting: Gerard is in the gardens alone, sitting on the bench.)
JOANA: (Runs in) Gerard! Gerard!
GERARD: What’s wrong, Joana?
JOANA: Its my uncle! I tried to convince him of the truth, but he’s too deluded. He won’t listen!
GERARD: Your uncle has strayed too far to be convinced, Joana.
JOANA: Oh Gerard, you have to get out of the city. Please go! My uncle has troops sent by the pope himself to
take down all of you! 50 have been arrested and will soon be hanged! He is bent on killing you all!
GERARD: No. I’m staying.
JOANA: For once, Gerard, stop being reckless!
GERARD: I’m not being reckless Joana. If it is my fate to die for the truth, I shall do so gladly.
JOANA: Please Gerard, I-
(Johannes & some guards suddenly enter)
JOHANNES: So this is the Waldensian who’s been flooding my niece’s mind with heretical thoughts.
JOANA: Uncle! You had me followed!?
JOHANNES: Precautions, my dear. I must confess, I never imagined it would be my star student, Gerard de
Vallans.
GERARD: Your Holiness.
JOHANNES: You will join your kind in the prisons. I am disappointed in you Gerard. You had such great
potential.
GERARD: I am equally disappointed in you, for not being able to distinguish truth from lies.
JOHANNES: Take him away.
(Guards take Gerard away)
JOANA: You are a monster, uncle.
JOHANNES: No, Joana. They are. They pollute our faith with wrong teachings.
JOANA: They have done nothing wrong except spread bible truth!
JOHANNES: Come with me. And see what happens when people rebel against the authority of the pope & the
church.
(Drags Joana to the town square, where the people are gathered)
Respected townspeople. Our church is suffering from the effects of the blight of the Waldenses. Because of their
teachings, people think they are no longer in need of the salvation offered by the church! The pope, does not want
you to go down the wrong path. And so, he has offered you salvation, right within your reach! Come back to the
church & forgiveness is yours! You will be free from sin, hereon after!
(Lets out the painting)
On the other hand. This painting was found amongst the possessions of one of the heretics. He would not say who
painted it, even after severe torture. And so, I make a proposition today. The artist who painted this must come
forward. For every hour that passes that he doesn’t make himself known, I will have 5 heretics burned. So, unless
you want to see your fellow “light-bearers” burn, I suggest you come forward.
JOANA: This isn’t right!
JOHANNES: This, my dear, is justice. Righteous justice. (To the audience) Come forward now!
KEV: (Comes forward) I painted that.
JOHANNES: Guards! Arrest him! Bring him to me! (Once Kev is close, he speaks again) Did you or did you not
paint this insulting image?
KEV: I did.
JOHANNES: Why?
KEV: “..As God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with humility.” (Col. 3:12)
JOHANNES: See his impudence and disrespect to authority! He even uses scripture to justify his actions! (Laughs
bitterly. Faces Kev) What is your name?
KEV: Kev de Vallans.
JOHANNES: de Vallans? Do you know of Gerard de Vallans.
KEV: He is my brother.
JOHANNES: He was arrested just a while ago for introducing my niece to your so called “one true faith.” It
seems as if you are doomed to the same fate. Take him!
(Kev is dragged along by the guards. Joana approaches him)
JOANA: I am so sorry, Kev! Truly, I am. I swear, I hadn’t meant to cause this much trouble. Your brother saved
my life!
KEV: Have no fear. There is a purpose for this. But please, can you find one named Aria? She will be waiting for
me.
JOANA: Yes, I’ll do that.
(Guards arrest Kev & exits. Townspeople and Johannes also exit) (ARIA enters)
ARIA: (Sit down & waits excitedly) What’s taking Kev so long?
JOANA: (Approaches Aria) Are you Aria?
ARIA: (Stands) Yes. I am. Is there a problem?
JOANA: Kev isn’t coming.
ARIA: What do you mean? Where is he?
JOANA: Let’s talk somewhere else. Come with me!
(The two exit)

SCENE 5
(Scene opens to the dungeon where Johannes was crumpling the bible tracts. Gerard is in chains, standing before
Johannes. He is flanked by 2 guards. Johannes has his back to Gerard)
JOHANNES: I never imagined it would be you. Why did you do it?
GERARD: (Remains silent)
JOHANNES: Do not force my hand, Gerard. I am being much kinder to you than to the other prisoners. Tell me
now. What spurs your fervor? Is it pride? Self-glory?
GERARD: No.
JOHANNES: Then why? You could have been like me! You still can. I am offering you a second chance. Recant
and I will set you free. I would even give you Joana.
GERARD: No.
JOHANNES: Then you will suffer and die!
GERARD: “The suffering of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that awaits us.” (Romans
8:18)
JOHANNES: What makes you think you will partake of that glory? Very well. Have it your way then. Begin the
interrogation.
GUARD 1: You have been caught in the act of distributing books that contain heresy. Do you deny it?
GERARD: If the Bible is heresy to you, it is truth to me.
GUARD 1: (Looks uncertainly to Johannes)
JOHANNES: (Firmly stares him down) Continue.
GUARD 1: But you use the same Bible to discourage people from confessing to the priests. In addition, you deter
people from attending Sunday mass! These are crimes against the church. Do you deny it?
GERARD: If the Bible is says something against having earthly priests as confessors then is it proof that the God
disapproves. The same goes for attending mass, for it is idolatry!
JOHANNES: Heresy! Lies!
GUARD 1: Retract now or your fate will be final.
GERARD: I have spoken only truth. Can I change truth as I would my garment?
JOHANNES: So be it. You, your brother and 50 other heretics will be hanged and burned tomorrow. Do not
blame me for your soul’s unrest.
GERARD: On the contrary. I must thank you. Never have I felt as peaceful and serene as now.
JOHANNES: May you burn in hell! (Walks away)
GERARD: Wait. You forgot something. (Takes key from his neck) If you would permit me my last words to say
to you, please heed them. They come from a sincere heart. You need this more so than me. “The truth will set you
free.” No one else will tell you that but me.
JOHANNES: (Takes the key. For a moment its as if he would change his mind. But then, he becomes cold) You
are mistaken. I am free. (Exits)

SCENE 6
(Setting: The stage is divided into two by a partition in the middle. It separates the prison cell where Kev is held,
& the other side where Aria comes in from. Aria enters, looking distraught.)
ARIA: (knocks on the partition) Kev?
KEV: (Incredulous) Aria?! (Moves closer to the partition)
ARIA: Kev! Are you alright? Please tell me you’re alright!
KEV: (Chuckles) It really is you. For a moment I’d thought it was an angel calling out my name.
ARIA: Oh Kev! This isn’t the moment to be joking!
KEV: (Sighs) Aria, I’m sorry for worrying you. I just couldn’t give up on my mission. People need to know the
truth.
ARIA: Kev, you don’t have to give up your life for it!
KEV: Is that doubt I hear from you?
ARIA: (Sobs) I don’t want to lose you. I’ve lost my mother, Uncle Cerf, Gerard, and now you! Please God!
Please, I’ll do anything, just spare Kev!
KEV: Oh sweet Aria. Did you know? The only thing I loved doing was to listen to you sing. You inspired me to
paint. It was as if I could draw strength from your sweet voice and somehow convert it to color for people to see.
You color my life Aria. Only you.
ARIA: (Sobs. Starts singing.) (Kev starts leaning against the partition and even presses his ear to it, as if to savor
every note & swell of Aria’s song.)
-----------------------------------------------------------SONG-------------------------------------------------------------------
KEV: Thank you Aria. I’ll see you in the town square tomorrow.
(Guards enter to bring Aria out)
ARIA: (Still sobbing) No wait! Please! No! I need more time with him! Kev! Kev!

SCENE 7
(Scene is gloomy. Somber mood. The town square is seen in a most depressing & unflattering light. JOHANNES
& JOANA enters)
JOHANNES: (Faces the audience) Today, we witness as heaven repays heresy with justice! Finally, our town
will be rid of these rebels, & we shall return to our lives in peace. (Moves to the side. Sees Joana) Come and stay
by my side. We will watch them all hang, together.
JOANA: No, uncle. I can’t.
JOHANNES: What do you mean?
(As the 2 are talking to each other, people start climbing the stairs to the gallows. As they reach the other side,
faint jeering & cheering can be heard)
JOANA: I see now that your heart is far too blackened by pride and hate. Yet, I will continue to pray for you.
Because that is what Gerard taught me. That is what the Scriptures have taught me.
JOHANNES: What nonsense is this? Behave yourself Joana!
JOANA: “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy. It is not proud. It is not self-seeking. It keeps no record
of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices in the truth.” Remember those words, uncle.
JOHANNES: What are you doing, Jo-
JOANA: (Takes out the Bible Gerard gave her. Sound immediately intensifies & then becomes still) (Speaks
directly to the audience) There is one truth! (Raises the bible) This! Good people of Turin, these people before
you are innocent! They shared nothing but the truth with you. And now they will pay for their lives. If the church
considers the Bible as heresy, then I choose to stand with them!
(It becomes noisy again. Just then Gerard enters. Still in chains. Joana joins him. They climb the stairs together
& disappear on the other side)
JOHANNES: (Sinks to his knees in shock) No. Joana… (Calls her name out weakly)
(A woman enters next. A child in her arms.)
WOMAN: Please, spare my child! He knows nothing!
ARIA: (Approaches woman) Let me take him. I promise I’ll take good care of him!
WOMAN: (Touches Aria’s face, gives her the child & hugs her) Thank you! God bless you. I’ll see on that great
day.
(Just then Kev enters. Also in chains.)
ARIA: Kev! Oh Kev.
KEV: Aria. You kept your word.
ARIA: (Chuckles) Of course I would. We promised, remember?
KEV: Would you sing for me. One last time.
ARIA: (Sobbing uncontrollably) Yes, yes I will.
GUARD 1: Keep moving! (Pushes Kev up the stairs)
ARIA: I’ll see you on that glorious morning, when we shall weep no more & never be parted.
KEV: Stand firm, Aria. Don’t forget your mission!
-----------------------------------------------ARIA’s song: Excerpt only-------------------------------------------------------
(Aria sings as Kev climbs up the stairs. Her song is drowned out by the crowd. The crowd’s noise intensifies.
Lights flicker and then go dark) (Curtains close)

SCENE 8
(Setting: Stage is set up like the first scene. This time, it is Aria bringing along the child.)
ARIA: Come now, child. We must hurry.
CERF: (Meets her halfway) Aria! It is a pleasure to meet you again, child. (Smiles brightly)
ARIA: I can say the same, uncle Cerf! This is my son, Kev.
CERF: Hello Kev! I’m Uncle Cerf.
LITTLE KEV: (Shyly) Hello.
CERF: If you’re anything like your mama here, I would say you have a good voice. Do you like to sing Kev?
LITTLE KEV: Yes, I love to sing!
CERF: Good, that’s good.
ARIA: Cerf, I would like to leave him to your care. I must go back and finish the work Gerard and Kev started.
It would be too dangerous for little Kev here to come with me.
CERF: It would be my honor, Aria. You have a mission to fulfill after all.
ARIA: I can’t have anyone else teach him the truth, but you. Teach him to find his mission and to do it
wholeheartedly.
CERF: I’ll do that. Thank you for trusting me, Aria.
ARIA: Who else but you, Uncle Cerf? (Smiles brightly)
LITTLE KEV: Mama, are you going somewhere?
ARIA: Yes, child. I have a mission to fulfill. I need to share to the people out there the most precious thing in the
world.
LITTLE KEV: And what’s that mama?
ARIA: The light of truth. (Uncovers Bible) This.
LITTLE KEV: But what if people don’t want the truth? What if they take you away?
ARIA: Listen closely, my son. This is very important. You must treasure the words of this Bible. Learn it by heart
and you will always, always, be guided to the right path. I love you, my little Kev. Behave yourself. Obey uncle
Cerf & remember all that I taught you.
LITTLE KEV: Yes, mama.
CERF: You take care too, Aria.
ARIA: There are still many like us out there, Uncle Cerf. Many who are not afraid to stand for what is right, and
to spread the truth given to us. And so long as we remain faithful, the light of truth will keep burning bright.
-----------------------------------------------------“The Faithful”----------------------------------------------------------------
(ALL TAG PEOPLE COME OUT TO SING WITH ARIA “THE FAITHFUL)
