The Wobbe number is not non-dimensional but depends on theunits that are used for
the calorific value.
Gases of similar Wobbe number will produce the same heat release in a furnace when
supplied through the same nozzle with similar supply pressure
Flammability limits for gases at room temperature
• Clean
– Low/zero emissions of sulphur
– Lower emissions of NOx
– Low specific CO2 emissions
• Global warming potential (Coal 1; Oil 0.75; Gas 0.6; Electricity 0 to ~4.0)
– Zero emissions of soot – ‘black carbon’
• Safe
– Lighter than air (s.g. = 0.58) Flammability limits of common
– Low burning velocity; Low explosion overpressures fuel gases at room temperature
– Narrow flammability limit

adottano tale tecnologia

Summary
• Natural gas is a globally traded commodity
• Essential for energy security for many leading regional and
national economies
• Highly developed technologies now available
• Fuel of choice for many heavy industry processes
– Steel, Glass, Bricks, Foundries, Steam/Power
• Key properties:
– Low CO2 emission; High water vapour content
• Has contributed to meeting climate change commitments
under Kyoto (‘fuel switching’)
