CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

An employee’s morale is the overall attitude, outlook, how they feel

about coming to work every day and their satisfaction towards their job, employer

as well as their colleagues (Heathfield, 2019). It is important for an employee’s

morale to be positive for it will create a positive environment that can certainly

improve their attitude and that can also cause them to be happy in their workplace

however, if the company provides a low morale or if the employee is not happy

and satisfied with their workplace or job and often complains about the tasks that

is being given to them and the various attributes of a company, it may result to the

employee being demotivated, unenthused, and unengaged. With this, it can be said

that an employee’s morale plays an important role that can affect their overall

performance which means it will most likely influence their efficiency.

Nowadays, one of the most demanding jobs to ever exist is teachers.

According to Fullan (2011) teaching is generally characterized and teachers tend

to feel a sense of moral purpose connected to their work. Their morale seems to be

the strongest when they can act in accordance with their values, if the workplace

provides a healthy atmosphere and are intrinsically motivated but it often results
2

in the opposite outcome when teachers are being limited in the capacity to carry

out their moral mission, which the level of morale and motivation become lower.

Teachers' professional identities are influenced by the educational environment,

teacher morale, motivation, and performance reflect many dynamics within that

setting (David Bosso, 2017).

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

According to Perumal (2011), you can determine that the teacher has high

morale if the teacher feels good about their co-workers or teachers and if they feel

satisfied with their work. According to Conngton (2011), the teachers morale is

low if they’re not satisfied with their salary and they can’t handle their behavior

and if they really don’t want what they’re doing simply because it is not their

passion. According to this study Adullah, A. G., et. al. (2016), school effectiveness

can be enhanced through the positive feelings and motivation of teachers. These

feelings can be described as teachers’ morale that has been identified closely with

the desire and effort of teachers to achieve the targeted work. Therefore, they

classified in high morale wherein teachers are satisfied or happy on what they are

doing that is why they put effort to be committed on their job. The motivation of a

teacher may affect the student achievement because if the

3

teacher is responsible to teach his or her students they might excel in class. So, if

the teacher is doing their responsibility at work the positive effect will be evident

from the students through their better performance and achievement as well as in

their school.

The positive feelings of a teacher towards their work is related to job

satisfaction while if there is an unfavorable attitude and feelings towards their

work, therefore it is job dissatisfaction (Sahito and Pertti V., 2017). Teachers play

an important role in our society they are the key to facilitate the knowledge and

educate students to help shape their lives. It is important that they feel comfortable

in their workplace because satisfied employees can productively accomplish their

obligation. It implies how much an individual feels the willingness and

contentment with his or her job. In addition, job dissatisfaction tends to work

unproductively it shows the lack of opportunity and encouragement in doing their

duties. If they are dissatisfied, they tend to reduce the level of their performance

and working efficiency. The variables of being a productive teacher are if they’re

an effective teacher, always have their lesson plan, effective in supervision and

disciplinary of their students. According to Getange (2016), the productivity of the

teachers is determined on how they perform in school the whole day in every
4

aspects such as how they participate to run the school properly, their class

attendance and on how the students follow them and if they use the instructional

materials properly to facilitate the learning process.

This study aims to know the employee's morale and its impact to working

efficiency of teachers. This mainly focuses on teacher's morale and conducted in

Systems Plus Computer College.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The aim of the study is to know the impact of the employee’s morale on

working efficiency. This research study entitled “Employee’s Morale and Its

Impact on Teachers Working Efficiency in Systems Plus Computer College-

Caloocan”

Specifically, this study seeks to answer the following questions:

1. What is the morale level of the respondents?

2. What is the rating of the performance of the respondents in terms of:

2.1 Student’s evaluation;

2.2 Academics Head evaluation;

3. What are the impacts of employee’s morale to the working

5

efficiency of the respondents?

4. Is there significant relationship between the impacts of employee’s

morale and their working efficiency?

HYPHOTHESIS

Ho: There is no significant relationship between the employee’s morale

and their teaching efficiency.

Ha: There is significant relationship between the employee’s morale and

their teaching efficiency.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

Teachers. In this study, teachers will be able to determine if their morale

is efficient and effective on how they teach the students; if their satisfaction to

their work meets the satisfaction of the students also if they are satisfied but the

level of the teacher’s morale does not meet the student’s satisfaction in learning.

Administrators. Through this study, administrators of the school such

as the academic heads, can align the teachers’ skills and knowledge to the work,

they will be assigned for students to also benefit by the efficiency of how the

teachers teach. Also, in knowing the teacher’s capabilities, this can help them
6

boost their morale because the teachers are aligned with what they are capable
with.
School Management. The theory of Herzberg justifies the factors of what

makes the teachers’ morale are composed of. Through this theory, the researchers

can determine where the management and teachers need to improve for them to

perform well because the morale affects their productivity as well as the academic

performances of the students. This theory signifies motivation that is necessary in

a teacher’s morale.

Students. If teachers know how to be understood by students by showing

the right morale can improve the students’ academic performance may influence

them to a positive attitude and enjoyment while learning.

Future Researchers. This study can be beneficial to future researchers

by improving it as a basis in hiring applicant or more likely to human resources.

Moreover, this study can also formulate a new teaching strategy focusing on the

teachers’ morale and enlightening the students.

7

SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY

The research study mainly focused on the teachers’ morale and its

impact on the teacher’s efficiency. This study takes place at Systems Plus

Computer College-Caloocan.

The respondents of this study are the teachers who were teaching in

Senior High School specifically from the academic strand which includes the

Accountancy, Business, Management (ABM), Science, Technology, Engineer,

Mathematics (STEM), Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMMS), General

Academics (GAS), and then the selected students and administrators evaluate their

working efficiency through survey. The study happened within the school year

2019-2020.
